Best all-around laptop under $750? in Laptops ·

Great, thanks 👍
I read somewhere that because they're integrated, the touchpad clicks might be imprecise. Apparently, while holding down a left or right click, the cursor drifts a little bit... so I was worried, but I guess if that isn't an issue, then it's fine.😁

Just one more thing. I'm wondering if it'll be an issue if the left and right clicks on this touchpad aren't separate physical buttons, but just integrated into the surface. Looking at more photos of the laptop now, and it looks like that might be the case here:

Thanks for the reply 🙂
Right now, I’m at work where I don't really use Adobe Illustrator at all, even though it’s part of my field (civil engineering). So, I just tinker with it whenever I feel like it, and mostly I just need it for 2D drafting. On my old computer, I was working on an i3 with 4GB of RAM and didn't run into any massive issues.
I'm planning to use this instead of a desktop, so I’d rather not buy an extra monitor if I don't have to. I won't be carrying it back and forth to the office; I'm just picking it up because it's easier to have in my apartment than a full desktop setup.
The models you suggested are honestly way out of my budget :/
Would this one work, since it seems to hit most of the specs? http://www.dell.com/en-us/search/product/example-link?
That’s basically my absolute limit for what I can spend.

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for the help 🙂

I'm feeling pretty stuck too. I'm looking for a laptop to replace my desktop. I'll be spending quite a bit of time on it, so I think I'd prefer a 17.3" screen. If possible, I'd love to find one in Indianapolis so I can actually see it in person before buying, and regarding the warranty, the better the better 🙂 I'm leaning toward Dell most, but that doesn't mean I'll buy it if there's something better for the same price. macOS or Windows, either way is fine.
I don't plan on gaming much, but I'd like to be able to play something occasionally if I feel like it. Mostly just web browsing and work—specifically using Adobe Illustrator—and maybe watching a movie or a series here and there.
I've been reading around online, and from what I gather, it might not be worth getting anything with a processor weaker than an i3. I guess I'd rather buy something decent now so it isn't obsolete in a short while.
Also, build quality is important to me. I want something solid that won't feel flimsy after opening it a few times.

I found a few options that caught my eye. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they are worth it, or if I really need something this spec-heavy or if I could get away with something cheaper for what I need:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

One more thing—the difference in resolution between 1600x900 and 1920x1080, and the difference in graphics on the Dell models. I wonder if I'll even notice those, or if I should even bother worrying about them.

Sorry for the long post. The more I look into this, the more confused I get.😁 Thanks again for any help!

Yeah, maybe if they have a power of attorney.
Zachary Peterson6 said:Of course, value is value, and a buyout could also be $0.33😉

I thought so too, I guess, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks a lot for the quick reply. 🙂
Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me with a quick question. This would be my first time sending something via COD. I checked the USPS website and estimated the shipping will cost about $16. I’m planning to send it as a standard package marked fragile. I was thinking about asking the buyer to just wire me double the shipping cost upfront—let's say $33—just so I know they'll actually show up to pick it up. So, when I fill out the COD amount, I’d take the total value of the item plus shipping and subtract those $33 they already sent me, leaving me to request something like $67 upon delivery. What I really need to know is: can the COD amount on the receipt say $67, while I put the actual item value as $100? Basically, is it okay if the COD amount and the declared value of the item don't match, or do they have to be the same?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Betty Nelson71 said:Just one question. I bought some books on eBay, maybe half a kilo or a kilo total, and I'm paying cash on delivery. Now the books are $33 and I have to pay an extra $20 for shipping?! WTF?!😲The guy told me the day before that shipping would be $6.75. I should mention the package arrived the very next day, so I'm ordering again and telling him to just send it via standard mail, not expedited or whatever, because I thought that was why the shipping was $20. But now he's messaging me saying the shipping came out to $8 and he'll refund me half of it. What's going on? And the lady at the counter told me she didn't understand why I'd pay shipping $20 when I could just pay $6.25.😲

I guess he sent it via FedEx instead of a regular parcel or a certified shipment.
Nancy Robinson66 said:Does anyone know what counts as an oversized package? I'm sending out a box and I'm just not sure which dimensions trigger that classification.
Zachary Peterson66?

Here is what the USPS website says:

Package Dimensions and Weight
The weight of the package you want to send can be up to 44 lbs. The sum of the length and the girth (measured at the widest point) can be up to 118 inches, provided the largest dimension doesn't exceed 59 inches. Minimum package size is the same as for letters (minimum address side is about 3.5" x 5.5"). If you need to ship something larger or heavier than these limits, you can use FedEx.

Additional Package Services
Oversized
Shipments that don't fit standard packaging due to shape or composition (like a bicycle, an exhaust pipe, or other irregular items) can be sent using the "Oversized" service. If you use both "Oversized" and "Special Handling," you'll only be charged for one service.

So, I guess from what I gathered, if it's bigger than those limits, you can't use regular mail—just FedEx—and "oversized" seems to just mean irregular shapes. Hopefully that helps.🙂
Susan Anderson77 said:I only got a confirmation from FedEx with the address and info, but no tracking number.
EDIT: I found it, but it says the package doesn't exist.
EDIT2: Found it. It says: Jan 31st, preparing shipment for delivery.
What does that mean, I guess?

It also says they tried delivering on the 30th and 31st, but nobody was home.

That probably means it wasn't delivered to the recipient and it's just sitting at their local post office waiting to be picked up. If it isn't collected within 5 business days after they leave a notice, it gets sent back to the sender.
Susan Anderson77 said:Man, if I have to pay double shipping now... that's not cheap. I guess, either way, you can't really lose, right? Or what if the person gets it and just doesn't pay?

You have the tracking number, don't you? I think you should be able to check the status there, so at least you'll know if it reached the destination or if it was actually delivered: http://www.usps.com/tracking
Timothy Wright4 said:So, here’s the deal. I ordered a mandatory car safety kit from Washington, D.C. The guy said he sent it out the Saturday before Christmas. He used standard mail. So far, there's no sign of the package. He gave me some kind of tracking number, but I don't get how it can be standard mail if there's a tracking number? Any ideas? Should I just wait, or should I head down to the post office?? Just so you know, another package sent last Thursday, January 3rd, arrived today via regular mail (certified).

I guess I don't quite follow—did he send it as a regular letter or just through standard mail??? If it was just a basic letter, there wouldn't be a tracking number. But if he sent it via certified mail or as a parcel through the USPS, then there is a tracking number that you should be able to plug in right here to see where the shipment is: If nothing comes up, maybe you could just call your local post office to check instead of going there in person.
Jesse Anderson2 said:I need to mail three books, they weigh 2.1 kg total, which is over the limit for a regular certified letter.

Obviously, I won't use an envelope, it’ll be in a box. I haven't really sent more than one book before—I usually just use those thick yellow padded envelopes—and I always go through AT&T Express because that's what my customers specifically ask for. How can I send these cheaper without using AT&T Express?

You could just send them as a package with declared value. For a 2-5 kg package with a declared value of $33, prices start at $6.75 depending on if you want home delivery or pickup at the post office, and based on the value (up to $33, the price stays the same). You can check all the math here: http://www.usps.com/shipping/rates.html
If it gets lost, you're covered for whatever value you list on the form and the package.
Jonathan Ramos46 said:Hey, I was expecting a package from America to arrive on Monday since it was sent out last Friday, but nothing has shown up yet.

I'm wondering if I can just head down to the post office and ask if there's anything waiting for me? Since I'm based in Indianapolis, I'm not sure if I should check at the main branch or just a local one. Thanks.

If it's just a standard package, the delivery window is usually three business days—so weekends don't really count. It might not have reached Indianapolis yet, I guess. But if you think it should be here by now, maybe call the post office or stop by to check. If you have a tracking number, you could try calling the USPS customer service line. If not, just call the local Indianapolis office and they should be able to point you in the right direction.
shadowwalker17 said:Hey, sorry if this isn't really the right spot for this, I'm just not sure where else to ask. Can anyone here tell me who uses eBay for ordering stuff? Thanks!

If you're looking for someone who might be able to order things for you, I guess there's a whole thread right here, so maybe check that out: 😉
Hannah Hernandez9 said:I guess... is there any way I can report a seller from Craigslist?

Maybe just post it here: , just mention they're from Craigslist, so maybe others don't get burned too.🙂
Nicole Lee4 said:Can you send HP separately or marked as fragile?$5.00 It's more expensive.
Shipping costs stay the same for values from 0 to...$1000
So, that would be the value up to those... I guess. $1000 It won't affect the price.

I see. So they're taking those HP ex shipments too, I guess. $5.00 For fragile items.
I guess it makes more sense for me to just use standard shipping and mark it as fragile. 🙂

Thanks to everyone for the replies. 🙂
Linda Williams28 said:You just have to pack it right. You really need to emphasize that it's fragile so they put the sticker on immediately (which makes shipping slightly more expensive, I guess). Shipping via HP ex is pricier, thank goodness, but it’s probably the safest way since they deliver straight to the recipient's door on their schedule—same day or next day by a certain time. If you choose next-day delivery before a specific cutoff, it ends up being pretty affordable, maybe around $3 or $4. When you go to the USPS counter, you just tell them you want to use HP ex, and they give you that orange form to fill out. You can decide if you’re paying the shipping or if the recipient is, and whether there's COD or not. If you have other specific questions, just ask... I'm just rambling generally here... 😉

Yeah, I already looked at the rates. I don't think using HP ex should cost me much more than standard shipping. My main goal is just making sure that keyboard and mouse end up intact in the receiver's hands. I know regular parcel shipping has a "fragile" option, but when I was looking at the HP ex rates on the USPS website, I didn't see an option for "fragile" in the add-ons. So, I guess I'm wondering if that's just assumed, and if the package insurance is included in the price I calculated on the site? Thanks 🙂
I should probably send this keyboard and mouse via USPS. I was looking into it, and it seems like using HP ex might be my best bet. Since I haven't used that service before, I'm wondering if I pack it the same way as a standard package, or if there are specific rules I should follow. I guess I need to know how much extra padding I really need to "protect" it. Also, do I need to mark it as fragile, or does the service itself just handle things more carefully than regular shipping? I'm also curious if insurance and the fragile handling are already included in the price, or if those are extra costs.
Thanks in advance for any help 🙂
