Either the networks make a killing, or we actually end up with something decent for Eurovision, maybe along the lines of Natalija. Plus, the whole country would have something fun to watch all year long.

Okay, I’ll admit—it’s a stupid idea. The rules state you can't play or perform the songs anywhere before the actual contest, so none of that would work. Clearly, I’m a total genius.

Wait—I just noticed this. What, are we supposed to send a native speaker now? Is that what "from an English-speaking area" implies? Or is it somehow shameful to sing in American? I don't have some intense, over-the-top patriotic streak, but don't mess with my mother tongue—that's sacred to me.
The networks should've just launched some talent competition—something along the lines of American Idol. It would've been a win-win: the networks make bank, we actually get someone decent for Eurovision who isn't a total disaster like those Natalija types, and the whole country gets something fun to watch all year long.

Sounds from the Verve hi-fi, compiled by Thievery Corporation. I don't really get much T. C. — I only have The Mirror Conspiracy at home — but they did a killer job with this compilation. Stan Getz, Elis Regina, Jimmy Smith... honestly, I could paste the entire tracklist here, because I'm loving everything. I listened to the album last week probably ten times already, just soaking it all in. And then again today in the car driving from Cleveland to Chicago. I can't pick a favorite track—and definitely not the lyrics, since half the songs are instrumentals and the ones with words are mostly in Spanish, which I don't understand.
I spent a massive chunk of time behind the wheel last week, so my favorites were basically whatever I happened to have on shuffle—since they were all MP3s, I just kept looping certain albums. Morcheeba was huge—stuff like "Part of the Process," "Who Can You Trust," and Big Calm. Honestly, it was phenomenal driving for four hours last night on some desolate stretch of highway, mostly stuck in a single lane (and they actually charge you $33 for that like it’s a major interstate!?!), crawling through traffic under a sky that finally decided to clear up. My absolute favorite has to be "What New York Couples Fight About," because it's that duet with, you know, Kurt Wagner. There's this killer line: "once the label is on something / it becomes an it"
A friend handed me a compilation of this guy about ten days ago—and honestly, I haven't listened to anything else since. I’m sure there are hardcore fans in here who have been obsessed for years, but they’re keeping him a total secret just to be gatekeepers. I can't believe that out of all the music snobs on this forum, nobody has ever started a thread on him—I actually had to learn about Drake from some random late-night talk show! Since I've gone completely off the deep end for this music, I did a little digging, and beyond the usual bio stuff, I read that there's a massive movement to revalue his work right now—he's become, to quote Pitchfork, a "near-household name." So yeah, I'm one of those losers who is only discovering him now because of this revival, but hey, better late than never. Those lyrics! That voice! That guitar playing! It sounds pathetic and dramatic, I know, but in the ten days I've been listening, my entire musical hierarchy has been flipped upside down. It's like some cheesy romance novel where you finally meet "the one"—which reminds me how much English grammar bugs me—like, people always say things are "wrong" when they should really just say they're "incorrect," but whatever, I'm just obsessed with how words work.

A few of my favorite translation fails: 1) Translating "I'll give you a ring" as "I'll give you a piece of jewelry" when the guy in *Four Weddings and a Funeral* is crying. 2) Using "state" to mean a government entity when they actually meant a "state of connection" (like being online or offline). 3) Translating "spring" as the season when it’s clearly referring to the Windows screensaver—you know, the coil thing.

I’m picturing some guy reciting this to a woman while lamenting how rock 'n' roll died... 😁 ...it's totally a rock thing!!!!
Man, it's just like those rebellious kids—they always start their sentences with "remember when," you know? It's like they can't get to the point.
shadowgardener12 said:ugh... if I already have a specific image stuck in my head, 🙂 😍 ...this would feel like a total scam! 😲 🙄
yeah, he’s clearly already pictured me as some fat lady with hairy legs 😉 but honestly? It's probably better not to look—I was pretty crushed when I realized Kevin Chavez3 doesn't actually look anything like his avatar.
Jack said:I have to disagree—you can't even compare Debbie Harry to Madonna! 😉
Look, even Debbie got messy sometimes. Personally, I find that kind of raw, human vibe pretty cool. And hey, shadowgardener12, why don't you take a look at my photo? It isn't *that* bad—honestly, it won't give you nightmares.
shadowgardener12 said:Oh yeah, I bet you just love Morrisey when he belts out "you're the one for me, fatty, you're the one I really, really... you're the one for me, fattyyy!" 🙂
Me? Please. Just look at these photos on my Flickr—take a good long look if you think so much.
Sure, but honestly? Choosing to gain weight and just not be some perfectly sculpted specimen—that’s probably the last real act of subversion left. Everything else is totally mainstream now—showing skin at the Super Bowl, filming music videos featuring mud wrestling, or posing on stage with other girls... If someone like Madonna actually wanted to shock the world today, she shouldn't have bothered competing with Britney or Kim. She should've just shown up to an event with, I don't know, hairy legs. For real—she should've dropped a video where she had hairy legs. Now *that* would be a true middle finger to society and all this fake morality, instead of this cheap, predictable stuff we see everywhere.
I find Steve Vai sexy. That’s how he looked the last time I saw him—big mouth, big nose. I don't really follow all those "shredder" types, but from the ones I actually remember, Malmsteen was BEYOND boring, Joe Satriani was slightly less boring, and I actually liked Vai. What’s the name of that one album of his where he has "Little Green Man" and "Junkie"? I can't recall the rest of the tracklist—it's been at least 10 years since I owned that damn cassette. That one was alright for me.
I actually had a great time—the sound was pretty solid too. I spent a couple of sets standing just a few rows back from the stage. Look, I’m not a fan of ear-splitting noise, so what works for me might be a total headache for someone else, I guess... but honestly? That chunky, heavy sound is exactly my vibe. Forget all that thin, dated stuff and the "pretty" personas. I’ll take the unconventional look any day.
The whole ride-sharing situation has become a joke—plans are falling through and cancellations are happening by the hour. Look, if it’s not too late for anyone, I can still squeeze one or two more people into my car. You just have to be able to get yourselves to the west side of Washington, D.C., within the next hour or so. Since it's way too late for coordinating via DM—seriously, don't bother—just call my cell directly: 098 / 168 23 24
