Of course. I’ve noticed this happening specifically with the massive files. Last time, I bypassed it by extracting directly to my C drive, but now there's zero space left there and I really don't feel like moving stuff around and merging folders manually. Since I never ran into this headache back on Windows XP, it clearly has something to do with Windows 7—so, who knows how to tweak the settings to stop this from happening???
Check this out (figure 4):
http://www.itechtalk.com/thread3595.htmlIf your TEMP and TMP variables are set up like they are in that image, then you're looking at a classic lack of space on your C drive—basically, because these extraction programs default to using the Windows temp folder, which lives on C.
If you actually have some breathing room on a different partition, just create a random folder there to serve as your new temp directory. Go ahead and edit both variables (figure 6) and under 'variable value,' just type in the path for that new folder. Give the computer a quick restart and try extracting the file again. See, during the process, the program creates a temporary file in that folder that's just as huge as the actual contents of the compressed file itself... so if that ZIP or RAR file is 7 GB, you need at least 7 GB of free space on whatever partition your temp folder is sitting on to make it work.
