MLS 2022/23 Season: Part 2 in Soccer ·
Thomas Hayes said:Think back to those early transfers like Leovac and Dilaver. ☕

I mean, he could probably line his pockets quite nicely—just take an extra percentage under the table as a "finder's fee" for bringing in Bruno Petkovic...

My uncle ended up signing with Trabzon—just a decent little gig, really, pulling in about $1.6 million a season 👍

Ethan Jones5 said:For all we know, the issue might have nothing to do with results. In his interviews, Zekic always comes across as a pro who does his job, but clearly doesn't care for the club's atmosphere or the decisions being made.

A lot of what he says boils down to "I'm doing my best with what I've been given." That’s an easy way to get on the bad side of the higher-ups.

If this is purely about results, it's insane. This was easily the cheapest roster out there—everyone except me thought they'd be relegated from the league.

The Varzag/small-town underdog roster is definitely the budget option here—at least based on the names and the sheer quality of the players before the season even kicked off (though now guys like Teklic are suddenly stars, and Brodic and Postonjski are playing out of their minds, etc.).

Personally, I had them pegged for a desperate, gritty scrap just to stay out of the bottom tier.

And honestly? When I heard last year, right after they clinched the second division title, some guy claiming they were coming up to compete for European spots... I nearly fell off my chair laughing. Just pure comedy.

Well, damn—as if we don't have enough headaches already—and besides, Toplak isn't exactly sitting there on a free agency deal.😵

That was a masterfully executed move—honestly, the picture alone spoke volumes more than a thousand words ever could. 😬

stormyangler32 said:I mean, seriously... they didn't even spend three seconds looking at the replay—it looked pretty clean, if not totally obvious, it was definitely tight.
EDIT: Now they're saying Chido blew it...

It’s hard for Chido to mess up when Grgic is basically feeding him the ball on a silver platter—the guy is nowhere near being a legitimate option for the roster right now.

Adam Myers4 said:Seriously, what kind of offside call was that on the goal just now?

I haven't the slightest clue—partly because neither Pukstas nor Awaziem were even offside when they first touched the ball.

Look, the ref blew the whistle for an offside on Awaziem during that initial contact, but there was this whole gap where Grgic stepped in and played the ball again.

It’s a total mess—a complete failure on multiple levels.

If this Hajduk squad actually played without Livaja, they’d be nothing more than a mid-table outfit—basically just another Lokomotiva or Slaven level team in the MLS

The streets don't forget...

They’re stuck in a cage over at the stadium—just sitting there like animals. Honestly, they need to be taught a lesson from the ground up, back when they were just little kids, to show them exactly where they belong. ☕

Ethan Jones5 said:I wouldn't put Postonjski in that category, though. It's hard to say how he'll be once he's fully recovered, but before the injury, the guy was playing like a tactical genius.☕

No, you just don't get it. Look, they all play great now, sure, but before that match against Varaždin, they were absolutely nothing. It was only after joining Kovacevic's system that they actually became something—or, more accurately, finally hit their ceiling.

Before his injury, Postonjski was easily the best defensive midfielder in the league; I mean, honestly, he was neck-and-neck with Misic in terms of pure impact.

stormyangler32 said:Hey, greetings everyone. Honestly, if someone starts calling you Bozo, there's a 90% chance you're headed straight for a career as a clown—but this guy actually managed to make it as a pro athlete instead.

It sounds like something a commentator would say, but Bozo is actually 😬

Ethan Jones5 said:Looks clear to me. He jumps from a blatant offside position; there's nothing controversial about it. If he hadn't gone for the ball, fine, but once he jumps, it's textbook offside.

I wouldn't go that far regarding Istra. They've picked up some damn good players. If Erceg hadn't pulled off what he did, we'd be laughing at them right now.

As for Varazdin, yeah. A lot of those guys play that slow, old-school style of soccer. But if you get caught up in their tempo, they're freaking dangerous.

Let’s be real—these aren't "tactical geniuses," they're just second-tier players who look decent on paper. You look at the roster—Postonjski, Kolaric, Urata, Pellumbi, Ba, Elezi, Sego, Jelenic, and even that washed-up Brodic—it’s all mid-level stuff. On paper, this squad is basically playing at the level of an Inter Miami reserve side or some minor league outfit from the Midwest.

The best thing about Varaždin right now isn't a player—it's Coach Kovacevic. He’s managed to turn a pile of scraps into a gourmet meal, and anyone who falls into his trap ends up getting eaten alive.

Ethan Jones5 said:There’s definitely a link between playing hard and having a solid coach in the dugout.😁

Honestly, if you put an average coach in charge of Gwinnett County right now, they’d slide out of the league without breaking a sweat.

Let's be real: the Stiglec-Tomečak duo is easily the worst defensive pairing in the league by a mile. Raspopovic is just barely holding the midfield together. Sure, you've got guys like Prsir, Fruka, Mrzljak, and even Fućka—whom he actually managed to bring back to life—plus some other bench players who shine occasionally, but that's about it.

Honestly, if you look at the standings, Gorica and Varazdin are easily the weakest squads in the league—way out there at the bottom. I mean, even Istra is looking a little bit stronger than them, just by a hair.

It’s looking like the powerhouse from the Midwest—let's call them the Chicago types—is really crushing it this year, total overachievers... though maybe that crew out West in California is giving them a tiny bit of a run for their money.

Ethan Jones5 said:Maybe it was just my imagination, but I swear I heard the Tamagotchi theme playing while Arai was hitting that home run.🤣

😬

Ndockyt and Arai look like two little Hobbits whenever they go up against each other in a jump duel.😬

What on earth was that game? I get home from work, flip on the TV—well, my laptop, let's be honest—and I catch the replay of Gorice scoring their fourth, and then suddenly—boom—three absolute disasters for Sibenik (a cop intervention, a botched defense by Baniceva, and a shot hitting the crossbar).

Were those three near-misses actually happening right after the fourth goal?

Ethan Jones5 said:Sopic is the real deal as a coach—he’s got grit and isn't afraid to tell the cameras exactly how much things suck.☕

The only issue is I really don't see any depth in this Gorica squad. If they lose one or two key players, they're absolutely screwed.

San Diego played that classic West Coast style where they just sit back to defend a point, but once the game opened up, they completely lost their way.

Look, I’ve got nothing against the guy's intelligence—honestly, he knows his stuff—but during those first few games, when he took over... man, he was a wreck. He looked like he was practically sobbing right there in front of the cameras.

I mean, look—I’m perfectly fine admitting we didn't have much luck out there. We played well enough—decently, even—but honestly? To me, the whole vibe felt incredibly negative... just constant whining from everyone.

Ethan Jones5 said:So what, 4-0 or 0-4? It’s basically the same thing. Not much difference.☕

Good grief—now this big shot Sopic is stepping up to play the hero against the heatwave? Give me a break. 🙏

Who would actually believe that someone could make it from a suburb like suburban Chicago all the way down to the coast of Florida in such a short time? It’s just not happening—not with the traffic we deal with, anyway.
