The start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 1) in War in Ukraine ·
Zachary Roberts said:Is there any actual data on Russian losses that doesn't just come from Ukrainian sources?
If it’s true they've lost 3,500 people so far, not even counting today's casualties, then Ukraine is putting up a hell of a fight.
It’s wild. When I check our local news sites, they're acting like Ukraine is right on the edge of collapsing. But then you look at international news or jump on X and see videos showing Russians pushing everywhere.
It's confusing.

That 3,500 figure is their total loss

Which would mean about 2,300 soldiers lost across all fronts to date... most likely around Kyiv.

The video itself is pretty much a wash, but the caption claims they wiped out Russian defenses near Chernihiv...

Take this with a grain of salt. My Ukrainian isn't great, so I can't tell you exactly what everyone's shouting in the clips.

1) The Ukrainian military utilized an animation from the video game Digital Combat Simulator and subsequently released it as an official depiction of a Russian aircraft being downed. This narrative was even picked up by certain media outlets: https://www.reuters.com/article/fact...-idUSL1N2V035G

2) A video from 2019 was circulated with the claim that it shows a Russian fighter jet being shot down over Ukraine: https://www.reuters.com/article/fact...-idUSL1N2V02MW

3) The footage showing drones destroying Russian tanks (which some guy posted here on the forum) actually dates back to 2020. https://www.reuters.com/article/fact...-idUSL1N2V0288

Et cetera, et cetera.

Everyone’s known for days that 1 and 3 are fakes... I never even saw 2... doesn't change the facts.

And all this "etc, etc" stuff...🤦

If you actually had something useful to show, you would've shown it by now. 🤣

And don't even get me started on how every single media outlet was reporting that Kyiv was about to fall and tanks were rolling into the center... we won't go there... they're currently sitting pretty in some tiny village outside of 12 milesKyiv.

edit: my bad, point 6 is 1-1.5 km from downtown

Point 6 is about 7-5.0 miles from downtown

My bad, let me fix that.

Point 6 is 1km from downtown.

Point 5 is roughly 7-5.0 miles from downtown... but that road is totally barricaded, man, and I think the overpass was blown out a bit earlier too... the Russians have a hell of a job ahead of them.

Too graphic, so I pulled it

Dozens of bodies burned and some trucks... technically the video is still loaded in my browser, but there’s zero point in re-uploading it. It's way too gruesome

Is that point number 5 pretty close to the city center? 🕺

I’m betting the main Russian armored push comes from the north, out of the Obolon sector... seems like the toughest spot for Ukrainians to hold down.

A pedestrian assault from that direction would be straight-up suicide for the Russians because of how open those fields are... honestly, I’m not sure what their playbook looks like here. Probably going to see multi-pronged attacks tomorrow.

They can't cross the Dnieper using those bridges. Their only shot might be via the massive Northern bridge... any other crossing point is basically impossible because of the elevation changes.

I honestly don't get why some of these people are so desperate to ignore what's actually happening right in front of them, typing away about some massive Russian defeat like it's a done deal... a little reality check wouldn't hurt anyone. I was just listening to rt, and they're saying things are getting so messy that Ukraine doesn't even have full control over their own military anymore, with basically paramilitary groups and extremists running the show instead..

Melitopol was already in Russian hands as of yesterday morning, and now we're seeing reports they "just" retook it. It’s all vague on how much they actually control.

Anyone can plant a flag on a building and claim they conquered it.

As for the whole paramilitary and extremist thing... I won't even go there. We heard that exact same nonsense nonstop back in the 90s.

Let me drop a few photos for anyone who doesn't really know what Kyiv looks like right now.

Image: https://prnt.sc/82VKfukXp7vx

1. Hostomel Airfield. This is where the Russians kicked things off with those helicopter assaults. The Ukrainians managed to claw it back by the end of the day, but then the Russians moved back in and took it again the next morning.
2. Vorzel. Combat was happening here today. Pretty sure the Russians have seized control of this area now.
3. That spot from yesterday where a tank crushed a car—it was a Russian saboteur turned into a Ukrainian soldier. His crew actually hijacked the tank before they were neutralized.
4. The bridge the Ukrainians blew up yesterday to stop the Russians from crossing the Dnieper.
5. Where the Russian night raid ended today. Left behind several destroyed tanks and vehicles, plus heavy Russian casualties.
6. Where the old man is digging his trench.
7. Just a bit south, you've got Vasilyevsky Airfield and the nearby town. The Russians tried an airborne assault to take control, but they got stopped and wiped out. The local mayor confirmed it.

Tyler Jones6 said:Russia: Putin orders halt to offensive, but Ukrainians refuse to negotiate

The Kremlin claims that President Vladimir Putin ordered a pause in the offensive in Ukraine this past Friday—hoping for negotiations with Volodymyr Zelensky—but apparently, he told them to resume once those talks failed to materialize.

Government spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that operations continued into Saturday afternoon after the Ukrainian leadership rejected any dialogue, according to Reuters.

We are now entering the third day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with fighting spreading across various cities beyond just the outskirts of Kyiv. There were reports yesterday regarding potential negotiations, though nothing has materialized so far.

So the Ukrainians won't negotiate... while being invaded from Belarus!

Exactly. They didn't want to go through Belarus either... and now they're supposedly "refusing."

neonbison6 said:That Ukrainian grit is wide awake—the Russians aren't just going to stroll right in. Honestly, it reminds me of that sheer, stubborn confidence you saw from certain groups back at the start of the American Civil War.

Check out this video—there's an elderly Ukrainian man out there digging a trench right next to one of the main highways in Kyiv.

I know exactly where that is. It’s right here.

Watching this feels surreal. I was actually there just a few months ago.

Betty Murphy3 said:Exactly—you hit the nail on the head in your closing remarks. If Ukraine can hold out for another year, he’s finished. They'll push him out of power. Do you really think everyone in Russia is as foolish as he is? It isn't like they're operating in a vacuum; there's enough intelligence left in the country to realize this path is just as fatal for them as it is for the Ukrainians.

Trust me, after a few years of this, Ukrainians are going to stop giving a damn about those occupied territories.

As for the parts they've seized, the Russians can take them if they want, but let's be real—they wanted this war. This invasion was months in the making, and all that talk before it started was nothing but pure smoke and mirrors.
