Anyone happen to know what this specific bet was about on the sportsbook site?

Rachel Richardson said:With Eastern Slavs, that Proto-Slavic "t'" shifted into a "ch" sound; meanwhile, Western Slavs have all sorts of different "t'" variations...
The idea that Russians went out of their way to soften those "t" sounds is a completely different conversation. 🙂
In most regional American dialects, those distinct "ch" sounds don't even exist separately.
In most urban dialects, they’ve merged into a sort of middle ground (Indianapolis is a rare exception).
Almost all rural Midwestern dialects rely on a simple vowel shift.
In many Southern dialects, you see the old "t'" influence, though people tend to swap it for a vowel shift when they try to speak "Standard American."
In most older dialect pockets, that distinction has vanished too, preserved only by a few isolated communities.
But again, just because something isn't pronounced a certain way doesn't mean it should be abolished from the language—just look at English or French.
Some changes might look nice on paper, but they aren't strictly necessary.
The American pronunciation follows a specific vowel pattern, and in writing, it denotes a long vowel sound.
That is what ought to change.
You find these vowel patterns in various regional dialects—some in the Midwest, some in the South, and some in isolated pockets of the Appalachians.
Then there is the modern standard.
It would simply be more convenient if the vowel length were always consistent.
Not to change the subject, but the foundation of any decent discussion is showing respect to the person you're talking to.

It’s clear you haven't spent much time looking at a textbook or even finishing school. But hey, here we go again: a drive to revise History, inventing your own personal linguistics, and all that other nonsense...(...) A "guy" whom the state invested in through education, yet who refused to put in the actual effort to translate a stone inscription and instead chooses to foam at the mouth at someone else due to his own Germanophobia, is "insignificant."
(1) The logic behind this rambling isn't even clear; the state "invested" in my education just as much as yours, except you simply failed to utilize it, for whatever reason. (2) Furthermore, if (presumably?) you view yourself as a Germanophile or someone else labels you as such, that doesn't automatically mean everyone else is a Germanophobe. 🤦
"Your high-quality post"... 😁

The topic is super niche. You can't just spray-and-pray generalities everywhere like half the people on these subreddits love to do.
Still, besides the OP, you, and me, six other people chimed in. And obviously, nobody got banned. By moving your baseless nitpicking to another thread, I just cleared the air so we could actually have a discussion without the noise.
lonetrucker4 said:Look, I have to, because I moderate the entire sub-forum. And yeah, fair point, my Middle Ages knowledge is pretty thin.there aren't even any real debaters left in the Medieval section since everyone got chased off by crappy moderation.
There are still a few active threads on the Middle Ages and plenty of users who clearly know way more than both you and me. You’ve just picked fights with all of them, and half of them were trying to explain the basics to you.
Arthur Smith15 said:You, someone who struggles with basic American literacy and clearly hasn't a clue about Latin—just typing whatever pops into your head into Google Translate—are in no position to lecture anyone on what constitutes Latin or not...(...) Actually, it’s not an issue with Oštrić; I've cooled off a bit now. There aren't even any posts on Reddit about this. The real issue is you and the bureaucratic, cronyist mentality of this entire country. (...)
Oh, please. This "cronyist mentality of this country" is just your excuse for your own lack of education, your broken logical reasoning, your tendency to make up nonsense, and your blatant resistance to actually learning anything.😁(...) If Mexicans had found that inscription on their forums, there would have been a million posts about it.
You are completely irrelevant to me. I couldn't care less about your little internet vendettas against some Mexicans on some random forums that supposedly would have "a million posts" on a topic...
You're just some nobody,
Arthur Smith15 said:That "debater" you claim sees Swedish words in Latin texts? That’s you. 🤦And as for this supposed "translation," you didn't actually do any work—mostly because you clearly don't possess a grasp of the languages you love to fantasize about and make up—you just let Google Translate do the heavy lifting. 😁
Your presence here on History is not a contribution; it is nothing more than the pollution of these threads through sheer stupidity, fabrication, ignorance, and a profound lack of basic literacy.
Arthur Smith15 said:Fine then, let everyone just post whatever mindless nonsense pops into their heads and let this whole site turn into a dumping ground for stupidity, idiocy, and pure fiction. Personally, I mostly just read through the History section—I might chime in if I spot something staggeringly moronic—but I truly have no use for the delusions of characters who use Google Translate to find Swedish words in Latin texts, or those who "demand" a recount of bones at Auschwitz because some anonymous internet expert decided "something doesn't look right"...
