Book ad deleted from the high-ticket services subforum! in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Speaking as a moderator here.

First, regarding the "Hire/Freelance" thread. This section is strictly designed for people looking to hire someone for web development or professionals offering their services. No links, no images, and absolutely no company names allowed. You post a plain text ad, and all follow-up communication happens exclusively via PM. Emails, phone numbers, or anything else is prohibited. The entire point is to connect clients with service providers. Given these restrictions, there is zero opportunity for actual advertising since only your username is visible—no real names or business titles. Plus, there's no space for reviews or testimonials. This is the one and only spot on the entire Internet subforum where any kind of solicitation is permitted.

Daniel Garcia is selling books. Books have nothing to do with the specific purpose of the aforementioned thread. As for posting ads elsewhere, advertising is banned in other sections. Regarding the penalty issued, it was a yellow card. Therefore, Daniel Garcia hasn't been suspended; he’s just been warned.

If you want to post various other ads, use the Classifieds subforum. Or simply put something in your signature like "selling this book, contact me via PM," which I've seen some users do.

Direct messages are private communications sent straight to another user. They remain visible only to you and the recipient. You can access them by clicking the Private messages link in the top right corner of the site or by using this link:
http://www.reddit.com/messages

The rules regarding DMs are essentially the same as those for public posts. If a DM violates our guidelines and you want to report it, you can do so just like a regular post by clicking the report button (). Once reported, the message becomes highly visible to the site administrators, who then have the authority to punish the sender.

Leaking private messages in any capacity is considered a major infraction. You can find the specifics at this link:
http://www.reddit.com/showpost.php?p=24915579&postcount=2

Users currently under a Ban cannot access their direct messages.
FAQ - Reddit User Guide in Forum Help! ·
There are three ways moderators, supermoderators, and admins can penalize users on Reddit.

Direct bans.

The administration has the authority to issue a direct, temporary Ban to any user. The duration is at the discretion of the moderator issuing the penalty, ranging from a few hours to several months, or even a permanent Ban. While under a Ban, a user is prohibited from posting anywhere on the Reddit site (with the exception of the ban corner) and cannot use Direct messages.

2. Cardboard boxes.

There are two types of warnings: red and yellow. A yellow card serves as a warning and doesn't carry any penalty points. A red card is an actual penalty and carries a specific number of infraction points (usually anywhere from 10 to 1,000). These cards also have a set duration, which can even be permanent. Once a card expires, the associated penalty points are wiped from the user's record. You need to distinguish between the duration of a card and the duration of a Ban.

If a user hits the 100, 200, 300, or 400 point threshold by any means, the system issues an automatic 3-day Ban. Crossing 500, 600, 700, 800, or 900 points results in a 7-day Ban. Once they reach 1,000 points, the Ban is permanent.

The icons on the posts look like this:

3. Partial Bans

If a user is being a nuisance to moderators on one specific subreddit but remains helpful in another, those mods can request a partial ban for their section. This essentially makes that subreddit invisible to the user, as if it never existed. It’s a permanent ban. We only pull this lever in extreme cases where someone is toxic in one area but actually contributes value elsewhere.

Additional notes.

In the event that a user feels they have been treated unfairly... Infraction. You can file an appeal here:
I can't believe people are still arguing about this on Reddit. It’s honestly exhausting to watch.
If he thinks he got an unfair deal. Ban. (Not partial! While you're under a Ban, you can file an appeal right here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/discussion/f=144
All other appeals should be submitted here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/discussion/

Warning cards on unmoderated posts are visible to everyone. Anyone can see who issued the card, why it was given, and how many points it carries. Additionally, every user can check their own history of warnings and their current total penalty points. You can view this on your profile under Thread Display mode. Infractions.

I can't believe I'm even looking at this. It's absolute nonsense.

The Reddit search tool is honestly pretty flawed. Sometimes it fails to return results even when they exist, and other times it cuts off because of that 250-result limit per query. You can try narrowing things down by adding specific parameters—like searching within a particular subreddit—but even that doesn't always work. If you're hitting a wall, your best bet is just to use Google via this link:

To do it, just head to the subforum you want and click on the number showing the reply count for a specific thread (check the image). A little window pops up listing everyone who participated, sorted by their post count from highest to lowest. If you click the number next to a user's name, the search tool will pull up all of that user's posts within that specific thread.

You can also sort topics within a specific sub-Reddit. Those settings are located at the bottom of every sub-forum (right underneath the topic list).

You can insert images by clicking the image upload button () and pasting the image URL into the pop-up box, or just type it out manually:

The result looks like this:

For an image to actually show up on Reddit, it has to be hosted somewhere on the web first. If you're trying to use a file from your own computer, you'll need to upload it to an image hosting site. Here are some common ones:
http://tinypic.com/
http://imageshack.us/
http://photobucket.com/
Uploading to these sites is pretty intuitive, though they tend to tweak their interfaces constantly. I won't get bogged down in the specifics of how to use them. Once you host the image, you'll get a URL, which you then use following the steps mentioned above.

It's worth noting that most of these sites provide ready-made BB code for posting on forums. In those cases, you can just copy and paste that code directly into your post without needing any of the steps described at the beginning of this post.

You also need to keep the Reddit rules in mind. Posting images larger than 640px (either width or height) isn't allowed. You have three options for larger images:
  1. Resize the image
You can do this on your computer using an image editor, but most of these hosting sites also offer automatic resizing tools. Take a look at their features.
  2. Create a clickable thumbnail
This option is specifically available when using the hosting sites listed above. The idea is to post a small preview image on Reddit that links to the full-sized version when clicked. Most of these sites generate this automatically, so look for the clickable thumbnail option. Example (clicking the image):
    image
  3. Link directly to the image
This is the easiest method. The image itself won't appear in the post, but there will be a link that leads to the image.

Users can subscribe to specific threads to make tracking their favorite topics much easier.

1. How do I subscribe?

There are two ways to manage your subscriptions. The first way is to enable automatic subscriptions for every thread you reply to. To do this, head over to Miscellaneous Options > option > EDIT Your Details or just use this link:
http://www.reddit.com/user/settings
You can set your preferences under default Thread Subscription mode. A breakdown of what each setting actually does is provided in the next section.

The second way to subscribe is manually for individual threads. Just jump into the thread you want to follow, click on topic tool > Subscribe to this thread. A window will pop up where you can pick your notification style (explained below), then simply click Add subscription to confirm.

2. What are my subscription options?

You have five different ways to handle notifications:
  • Do not subscribe
This is the only way to actually cancel a subscription. All other choices create a new one. So, if you want to stop auto-subscribing or remove a specific thread from your list, select this option.
  • No email notification
This is standard subscribing. Choosing this simply adds the thread to your list of followed topics. You can find out how to view that list in the next section.
  • Instant email notification
This works just like the previous option, but with one difference: whenever someone replies to a subscribed thread, you’ll get an email alert immediately.
  • Daily email notification
Similar to the instant option, but instead of getting an email for every single reply, you'll receive one summary email per day covering all updates in your subscribed threads.
  • Weekly email reminder
Identical to the daily option, except you'll only receive one summary email once a week.

3. How do I view my subscribed threads?

There are two different ways to view them. The first method shows only the threads you follow that actually have new posts. You can access this by clicking Miscellaneous Options or using this link:
http://www.reddit.com/user/settings

The second method displays every single thread you are subscribed to. Threads with new posts will be highlighted just like they are on the main subreddits (bolded and featuring an icon that links directly to the first unread post). Access this via Quick Links > Subscribed threads. Alternatively, you can use this link:
http://www.reddit.com/subscriptions

To reach the signature editing page, just click on Options > EDIT email & password or follow this link:

Just make sure your signatures follow the formatting rules found here:
http://www.reddit.com/showthread.php?t=387469

The site admins reserve the right to remove or edit any signatures.

If you actually want your signature to show up in your posts, you have to enable it. When you're writing a post, look under Miscellaneous Options and check the box for show my signature.

1. Using Multi-quote for several different posts

If you want to quote multiple different posts at once, here is how you do it. For every post except the very last one you want to include, just click the Multi-quote button. Once clicked, the button turns red, which means that specific post has been selected for the multi-quote. Finally, for the last post, just hit the regular Quote button. This will pull all those selected posts into your reply box.

The buttons look like this:
  • Multi-quote:
  • selected Multi-quote:
  • Quote:

Example: If we want to quote two posts, we click the Multi-quote button on the first post. It turns red. Then, we click the Quote button on the second post. Both posts will then appear in the reply field. For an example of how to respond to a multi-quote, see part 2 of this post.

2. Multi-quote for a single post (splitting quotes into parts)

Suppose we want to split a post like this into two separate sections:
Quote 1

Quote 2

To do this, click the standard Quote button. This is what shows up in the text box:

Here’s the link to the thread, though if you want to jump straight to a specific post, there's a workaround. First, click the post number in the top right corner. That opens a new page with just that single post. From there, click the topic title in the top right, and it'll bring you back to the full thread starting from that exact spot.

However, there is an easier way. If you have the Automatically parse links in text box checked when posting, the forum will Automatically add those URL tags for you. Simply type the URL as plain text, and the forum handles the rest.
