Dennis Martin6 said:honestly, both ways seem tough—but it feels like Beck is way better at playing with folk stereotypes than just repeating them. that’s why 'Mellow Gold' hits so much harder than stuff like 'Sea Change' or 'One Foot in the Grave'—I guess I actually did listen to some Beck albums after all 😁.

For me, Sea Change is the best Beck album—though Odelay and The Mutations are right up there. Mellow Gold is close behind, especially tracks like Whiskeyclon, Hotel City, 1997.

beck - Mellow Gold—the only Beck album I've actually sat through—is a killer deconstruction of folk clichés, but this one is just pure cliché, total drag.

Of course you think it's all garbage—just like how post-dark metal, ambient-experimental-electronic-dark-vaporwave, or even anarcho-proto-dark-psychobilly is all garbage to me.

Can you explain why deconstruction is such a big deal? Isn't building something from scratch way harder? Beck loves folk—he always has. He didn't tear it down; he just leveled it up.

This week's pick—one criminally underrated classic blending Americana, roots-rock, and folk-soul.

Women first this time! And fresh too! 🙂
(Honestly, they're winning me over instantly...)

I'm gonna skip the suggestion round this time—I did enough preaching last week, so I'll just stay quiet for a bit. But I'm definitely stoked to see what we end up playing. 🙂

Looking back at my absolute favorites from this past year—mostly 80% Americana, country-rock, and singer-songwriters—nearly half of that comes from female songwriters. Once I get settled, maybe in a few days, I'll drop my lists of the best songs and albums from 2020.

I’ve probably been spinning Waxahatchee, Phoebe Bridgers, and Jason Isbell more than anything else.

Starting the bidding. This is easily one of my top 5 albums from all of 2020.—no contest.

Casey Flores said:Look, I get that a concept like this eventually becomes necessary, but I didn't even get a chance to vote, let alone suggest an album. The Byrds would’ve definitely taken the win—maybe along with Glass Bead Game. Thank God that primitive hack Elvis Presley didn't make the cut. Are there actually people here who can stomach his brainless humor, or even worse, that trash rock? 🤮

I mean, if the average age here was around 16, I might actually get some of this...

Americans—acting like the perfect little obedient servants they are—always brag about being so sophisticated, but we all know they're just a bunch of hicks, even more than any other group out there. I'd bet anything that 80% of them are out there cutting their wrists to some cheap, newly-minted country garbage.

The only decent thing coming out lately is that country music from the Ozarks.😁

Anyway, now we're all just waiting on Sade. 🙂

Alright then. Looks like I managed to rattle your cages—the old-timers, the self-proclaimed rebels, and even the rookies (xavierkat, you're looking at me, and I'm counting on you to weigh in later).😁

Jason Mendoza said:man, Vuco is just an absolute legend—honestly, if you didn't get hammered and hit up one of his shows, did you even live? If I tried to recreate those nights today, I probably wouldn't have made it out alive 😁

heavenly carriages

When I first saw this guy back in the mid-90s—I was only like 7 or 8—my immediate thought was, "This dude definitely beats up girls." Okay, looking back, "women" would be the right term, but to me, everyone was just a girl back then—the whole concept of "women" was totally fuzzy, aside from my aunts and grandmas and whatever else... everyone else was just a girl.
I mean, that’s just my subconscious talking—the point is, Vuco basically looks like the archetype of a guy who hits women.😁

Mods, come on—admit it. You guys didn't vote for the Byrds just because Sweetheart is a masterpiece (I know you aren't really into country-rock)—it's honestly just because you get a kick out of reading my nonsense.😁

I have no clue what this is—just what my algorithm served up today.

Huge hit, though personally I can't stand it. Honestly, you kids today don't have a clue about the nuances of self-governance.😁

Looking at the organized list on the first page, it's clear that our buddy redbear12 hasn't jumped in yet—no clue when he will, either—and this album has been sitting there waiting for a bit... so I was wondering if you might want to take the lead on the intro? You seem to know the Mountain Dew stuff inside out, and hey, maybe you've got some extra time on your hands. 🕺

Also, if any other experts out there feel like diving in and writing about that before the selected album—feel free to jump in.

Sure, tomorrow—I'm totally wiped right now. I'm definitely not some lyrical genius like Darnielle, but AHWT still deserves a shot from a tired reviewer.😁

I see this as a complete sellout of core principles—just a cheap attempt to stir things up by pivoting toward those old-school, elitist types.😠

Charles Ramos4 said:Isn't every single one of his suggestions basically the best choice anyway? If that weren't true, he wouldn't be the one suggesting 😁

That’s actually why I don't vote for my own albums—I feel like I'm just an automatic vote for them once I suggest them. It's really up to you guys if you want to back him or not.

PS—I'm with you on the rest of what was said 👍

But honestly, every once in a while someone suggests something just as good—maybe even better—than what I picked.

Mark Cruz15 said:I’d honestly suggest we ditch this multi-vote campaign thing in the future—everyone just votes for their favorite group, which basically kills any chance for the underdog albums.

If everyone just picks one album, you end up with five different records getting one vote each—or nothing at all—and maybe four or five getting two. I can't commit to listening to five different albums every single week—I don't just listen to whatever gets posted here.
And look, out of ten suggestions, I’ll probably vote for my own pick 8 or 9 times—not because I need to win, but because my taste is usually spot on or at least top three.
Look, I know I'm biased toward certain genres—it is what it is. There's zero chance I'm voting for experimental stuff, cacophony, jazz, or most of those 80s picks—so that pretty much covers half the suggestions we get.
