Best music streaming platforms? in Music ·
Gary Patel said:Those numbers are actually pretty solid—considering the culture of buying physical or digital music was never really a thing here in the States.
I wasn't even expecting 50k.

It looks like Americans have relatively said "yes" to streaming. Which makes sense since it's basically super affordable (everything is roughly $17), and the catalog is massive. It’s honestly rare that I look for something and can't find it.

Plus, everyone has internet now. Whether it's home Wi-Fi or mobile data. I even know people who don't even bother with home internet—they just use a mobile data plan and hotspot🤣 everything at home.

So, having cheap, accessible unlimited data paired with low-cost streaming is a killer combo.

It goes without saying that being unable to tour—combined with the pathetic earnings 99.9% of musicians make from sales—is a total joke in modern music. I don't care who says what, but production quality is just tanking year after year. We're living in this total technocratic paradise where, in 10 years, we'll probably be listening to ringtones programmed by Bezos AI. Honestly? I actually respect anyone who didn't ditch their guitar in 2020 to go grab a corporate desk job.

were people actually happier back then than they are now?!

Even if they weren't—and I bet they were—at least the promise of happiness felt real, instead of just scrolling through phones and dealing with all this vaccine stuff.

Just YouTube.

I don't want to be subscribed to anything in my life—especially not paying extra to some corporate vultures for stuff I don't even physically own.

Look, you aren't the only one on this sub.😁

The Music subforum has gone totally silent. Is anyone even still hanging out here?

Later tonight or maybe tomorrow morning at the latest. It's tough to write about this because I'm feeling way more than I can actually think when it comes to this album—and honestly, putting those feelings into words is the hardest part.

Lisa Davis46 said:fass, I've been following Phoebe on Instagram for a while now because she's just cool and fun: fake_nudes

but the album just didn't click for me at all. I actually went back and listened to it twice more today after you suggested it—it's slightly better, sure, but I still don't really get it. I much prefer her natural voice when she's just talking. She's super likable in interviews, so I'm hoping for some kind of deep dive from you that might actually win me over on the music side.

Maybe it’s a bit too indie—maybe that’s why—but after five or six listens, it became a favorite for me. It’s one of those perfect examples of what Americans call "subdued" or "understated," which feels like such a breath of fresh air in this glittery, plastic era we're living in. Honestly, I'd prefer if she didn't have an Instagram presence, but hey—I'm a huge music nerd, I know how it is.😁

And honestly, it's probably a calculated provocation—don't forget how brilliantly she covered the king of trolls, Marko Kozelek, with his gem you Missed my Heart.

Just a word of criticism—straight up.

I'm just getting started—stay tuned. The whole album—just solid from start to finish. My number one bro in 2020.

Probably the most important, original, and radical hip-hop album since Kendrick Lamar - some rap songs:

Kendrick Lamar - some rap songs - I can't even begin to explain—it's just... yeah. Some things just hit different. Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly — some rap songs. Real stuff. (2018)

There were three options on the table—Steely Dan, Arsen Dedić, and The KLF—but I put my vote behind the KLF-ovac crowd, since they don't stand a chance if they're stuck sitting at just three votes.
"3 AM Somewhere out of Beaumont" and (especially) "Wichita Lineman Was a song i Once Heard" easily rank among the most sublime, original pieces of electronic production ever made—and then some.

But Abid over with Walter has the best saxophone on any Rock music record.😁

The whole thing about NOB mythology is just a joke—not even worth mentioning.

@Lisa Davis46/">@@Lisa Davis46 Just checked out your Last.fm profile to see if you were actually telling the truth about Prince.😁 Man, blasting 1999 for five hours straight is impressive—though I’m guessing you had work going in the background. Honestly, I think I'd lose my mind trying to focus on that for five hours straight.😁

Lisa Davis46 said:and let's not forget that closing scene—it’s rare to see something land that perfectly at the end.

Look, for me, this follows right after that massive "punch to the eye" movie—you know, one that could've easily been one of the top 5 or 6 masterpieces of the 2000s.
Honestly, wrapping everything up with a cliché gangster showdown felt way too easy—it just feels like a cheap way to lean into those old tropes about how bad Americans can be.

Alright, so who actually voted for The Stone Roses instead of David Bowie?🙂

👍

I don't think I've ever actually sat through that whole album in one go—even though I know every single track by heart.

I totally messed up and voted for The Stone Roses when I meant to pick David Bowie instead.

Can anyone who hasn't voted yet—and wasn't planning on picking Bowie anyway—throw a vote his way for me?😁

Maybe later this afternoon or tonight—it’s gonna be a struggle. I’ve never actually sat down to write about Prince, mostly because trying to pin down what his music even *is* feels impossible.

https://popcultureexperiment.com/201...you-were-mine/

I honestly thought it was Stublić's Heart of Glass (that second part of the song) — but after giving it a listen, it doesn't quite hit the same. Maybe it's some old rock band, or maybe I'm just tripping.

You let all my friends come over and eat
And you were so strange
You didn’t have the decency to change the sheets
Oh girl, when you were mine
I used to let you wear all my clothes

The melody is just perfect — maybe that's why it feels so familiar, like something you can't quite place. Great melodies always work that way, so the endless covers make sense, but the only reason anyone other than Prince would sing THESE specific lyrics is if they're some obscure indie outfit trying to be edgy.

urbanheron4 said:Who was the American New Wave band that covered this Prince When you Were mina track? Was it Jura Stublić or someone like that? It sounds crazy familiar—I just can't place it.

It’s not from the US, but if it were this, wouldn't it be
?
A pretty bad cover of a truly brilliant song.
