thin white duke... 😍

When I first stumbled onto this album, I literally listened to nothing else for like ten days straight. Then I went out and bought the vinyl—my very first Bowie record. It’s still my absolute favorite of his, and honestly, maybe one of the best ever made (even beats his earlier stuff, the trilogy, or 'Scary Monsters', which is also killer). You could probably analyze these lyrics forever—there was enough white powder involved to fuel a small nation... it's just a shame we don't have any high-quality live recordings from that era.

...the cover:

station to station 🙏

Do you know about this?

Personally, I feel like he didn't play enough from his last two albums on that tour—maybe only 5 out of 15 songs from YA and STS—and I always got the vibe he pushed the Ziggy/Aladdin era way too hard during live sets.

Anyway...
This was my introduction to Bowie—early '92, I think. Just a random Saturday lunch at my uncle's place out in the suburbs—I can still smell that distinct scent of old pipes and my uncle, half a foot of snow outside, and a clear TDK cassette labeled "Various."

I'd give up a year of my life just to relive that afternoon for five minutes.

Probably the most autumnal track on the most autumnal album by the most autumnal singer-songwriter ever.

I cast my vote on Mastodon for her to win—honestly, I’m a little nervous about Diamanda Galás even though she's a total legend. Just hoping we’re only picking one album if there isn't a tie?

Someone get this Blood Bitch thread open—I'm ready to start typing.😁

I can't bring myself to listen to it until you guys actually open the thread.😁

Look, Lisa Davis46, I could totally start a thread on Cooder, but there are two issues—I barely know his stuff from 1976 onwards, and honestly, I have zero interest in messing around with his world-music phase. Every thread I've ever started was in my wheelhouse, except for those ones about Fun Music.😁

this whole prophetic dream thing is actually terrifying—happened to me once and let's just say it wasn't a vibe, either in my sleep or when I woke up. gave me the chills. you totally spooked me too, right when I was finally feeling brave enough to hit the movie theater this week after months of staying grounded... I think the last thing I saw was some documentary at AMC back in February. strictly positive vibes today, though.

anyway, Dennis Hall41, here's one for you:

weird dream 😁

I'm letting myself feel it now and it doesn't even feel depressing like it used to,
(way back, like 15 years ago) I have no idea what's going on with me...

Think we're good for now—at least until it gets colder or the flu hits hard. Chill out, we still have a few months.😁

Yeah, Dead Souls isn't even that dark. Maybe I should've checked this one.😁

I had this dream last night about massive daily death tolls from some virus—hospitals just overflowing. I can’t really recall the surroundings, but I know it was set in New York City. Dream logic is such a mess, but that sense of pure dread stays with you for days sometimes. This was definitely one of those dreams.
For context, about a week before the big earthquake hit, I actually dreamed about it—probably for the first time in 10 years. I dreamt I was standing in my living room and the whole building was swaying like a ship at sea. And man, it actually happened—I jumped out of bed and instead of being terrified, I was just fascinated watching everything swing around.

Don't want to freak you guys out, just one cheerful update. 😁

missing guys like Ash, Jules, Lawrence Ross4, and Late B... 🙂

np Pete Josef (feat. Marie Lister) - Giants ...

Alright, I think the first and last ones are around here somewhere. It’s a bummer Panglossa isn't posting more often—KC's pretty quiet too—and looks like Old Soul, Dile, and Suburbian have basically checked out entirely.

Steven Newman50 said:I am now. It’s leaning pretty hard into prog—interesting choice, considering you're such a patriot and a fan of old-school classics.👍

Some people claim they’re the best math-rock band (with some post-rock vibes) of the 21st century. I don't know—I don't really follow that scene, mostly because most of it is just boring to me—especially stuff like Hell or Don Caballero.
I actually think this is great.

And this is more than just great.

Look, I'd put Into The Purple Valley in my top 30-50 albums of all time—no question—but honestly, I don't think I could ever get as hyped about a single track from it as I do with FT.

I've always been really into his world music explorations, too... though maybe only Paradise and Lunch actually holds a candle to ITPV.

Man, I feel bad that Cooder didn't take the win—but honestly, it sucks even more that it wasn't Molina, since that would've given me an excuse to just go wild and pour out all my love for Transmission🙏. 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏

NP: post rock ballad

Yeah, true—things were basically dead at that point.

Speaking of post/math-rock, have you checked out these guys?

Giraffes? Giraffes!

Nah, I mean, back like 3, 4, or 5 years ago—things were way more lively than they are now. It’s mostly because there were about ten more of us around, but honestly, there were also those 3 or 4 coworkers who we really miss.

Steven Newman50 said:It used to be—wild over here. 🙂 And yeah, you're allowed to chat ☕

Yeah, totally—I remember back around 2010. Some of the crowd there (who I think I only knew on a surface level) really gave me grief—like, "Who do you think you are, kid? We run this place." I definitely pushed back, though—especially since messing with the UN mods back then was honestly pretty hilarious.😁

Steven Newman50 said:The whole point of the NP thread was explained ages ago over here 🙂

For anyone who needs the TL;DR:

Basically, you can't go off-topic if you don't want to 😁—but hey, I guess talking about occultism or astrology fits the vibe of the music we're into.

My current rotation: Blind 🙂

Man, that link you sent me reads like some textbook on Constitutional Law.😁
Anyway, moral of the story—reading is encouraged.🙂

Arthur Brown6 said:I gotta tell you—I’m way more interested in what you think about Reggae Billboard Chart and On the Corner.

Forget those expanded CD versions... I listened to the 38-minute vinyl version of F (high) A (high) (infinity) and it hits exactly when it needs to. Wiki says the CD clocks in at 64 minutes. Is that actually the definitive cut, or did they just tack on some extra crescendos or whatever?

Also, there's this Japanese band—no backing vocals, just a dash—that seriously holds their own against that album from the same year as the Unknown vinyl.

Dub/reggae isn't really my scene. I pretty much write it off before even trying—though I've been thinking about fixing that by digging into some classics outside the usual Marley/Tosh/Black Uhuru circle, which I know decently well despite only checking it out maybe three times in ten years.

I spun On the Corner maybe three times about a decade ago, and honestly, something about it just didn't click for me. It felt like this aggressive collage—just way too much "energy" for its own good. When it comes to Davis's fusion era, there's no competition for me—A Tribute to Jack Johnson and In a Silent Way are the only ones I keep on constant rotation.

I saw that vinyl release of F, but the one I have feels more right. This is music you have to sink into—the timing is everything. Imagine if Be Kind lasted 50 minutes with the exact same tracklist.

Lisa Davis46 said:honestly, I don't think anyone can—and frankly, I don't even want to find out.
🙂

Sure it's possible—but when you're talking about those higher spiritual pursuits versus stuff like economics, linguistics, or medicine, true legends are rare. You find great astrologers about as often as you find great artists, philosophers, or mathematicians—maybe one in every 10,000 people in those fields.

Before things go off the rails in the chat 😁 (if I were still following the official party line—which I basically abandoned for my own sanity—I’d probably be getting sent straight to an Alternative program with some 8,000 points or whatever 😁), let's try to stay on topic.
It isn't Astrology, it's Astronomy—the ultimate metal ballad, honestly better than 99% of the stuff out there, and a total throwback to one legendary band from back in the day.

Lisa Davis46 said:Alright, so I finally added long sleeves and a throw blanket to my desk setup today—it's a game changer.

I’m all about Libra and Aquarius—honestly, I feel like I’ve crossed paths with them more than any other signs in my life. Scorpios too, but that whole vibe is just way too intense for me... I don't really get it. Someone once told me I have the absolute worst combination of Sun and Moon signs—basically, when they're sitting in opposite positions on the spectrum, it’s always a mess (kind of like an Aries-Capricorn setup). 😵 Libra rising—it's all about that balance. 🙂)...

Dennis Hall41, you doing birth charts too? 😁

Not great. I was checking out the ladies at work—for free, obviously—and honestly, I thought about charging them like $20 a pop on my card, but since I'm an Aries-Libra rising, I’m just always there to help.😁

I'm pretty sure about character sketches—that part is solid. What I don't know—and honestly, this is some high-level math—is the predictions. A real astrologer could literally tell you exactly how and when you're gonna go. Or better yet—they'll just keep it to themselves and tell you what to watch out for.

Your rising sign and moon sign aren't inherently bad—honestly, nothing is really "bad"—it’s just those brutal outer planet aspects when they hit difficult houses. For me, having that Pluto square to my Sun on the IC is a trip—I can't escape this super dark outlook on life, plus I'm constantly terrified of losing people I love or facing total ruin. Some things just require a lot more soul-searching and work.
It’s way more "intense"—or at least messier than just dealing with the opposition—when you're looking at an aspect square, like an Aries-Capricorn instead of an Aries-Libra.

Are you an Aries or was that just a random comment—?
Album of the week in Music ·
The results are gonna be all over the place—there's just too much good stuff here, and we could easily end up with a four or five-way tie. I stuck to picking just three albums because there's no point in voting for everyone. So, we're back at square one. My suggestion for next time? Whoever suggests an album first, that's what we listen to.
Or maybe—whoever has the closest birthday gets a veto.😁

I was actually thinking it’d be pretty cool to dive into those weird Pidgin English variations, like with Feline. Then I realized 'roforofo' actually means 'mud' in Yoruba, whereas I spent the whole time thinking 'rofo' was just some Pidgin way of saying 'rough'—making 'roforofo' basically mean 'super rough.' 😁 We actually studied how certain languages double up adjective roots like that just to add emphasis back in college.
