Having spent quite a bit of time working on a 27" 4K monitor—including three months of heavy lifting in After Effects and DaVinci Resolve—and now seeing someone else dive into Premiere Pro, I’ve come to realize that if you're looking at 4K, you really ought to consider stepping up to at least a 32" screen. We can set the technical theories aside for a moment, because honestly, isn't the software itself usually where the real struggle lies?
If your primary focus is print work, shouldn't you be prioritizing a monitor with the highest possible Adobe RGB coverage rather than focusing on DCI-P3?

Edward Peterson70 said:I realize that on older Macs using integrated graphics, a whole lot of things either won't run at all or perform terribly because the workload shifts entirely to the CPU, so I suppose having a solid dedicated GPU is pretty essential. That goes for both Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

A 4K monitor, ideally at least 27", would be ideal. While having a good DCI-P3 spectrum is important, you don't necessarily need a high-end professional graphics monitor.

Something like this would be great. If I remember correctly from somewhere, this one covers about 90% of the DCI-P3 gamut.

Honestly, there are so many monitors around that price point—or even cheaper—that offer 90% DCI-P3, so is it really worth paying a premium just to jump up to 99% for that kind of money?😉

Then again, those high-end monitors can actually become a bit of a curse if you're primarily working on content intended for TV in HD or for web/YouTube. You often find yourself having to mess around quite a bit with color management and LUTs just to achieve a reasonably accurate Rec709/sRGB look.

As for the graphics card, while it certainly needs to be capable, wouldn't an Nvidia RTX 3060 or an AMD equivalent be more than enough for these tasks? Had they mentioned anything other than the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, I might have suggested something else entirely.

What are the standard resolutions you usually see for raw footage versus final projects or exports?

Personally, I’d put my money on the processor. Honestly, Adobe software barely touches the GPU; you’ll rarely ever see it fully saturated during a task. It’s also pretty inefficient when it comes to using the CPU, though you can certainly get some extra mileage there by letting something like After Effects handle multiple frames simultaneously, right?
Is hitting 90 degrees Celsius on a high-end laptop GPU during intense gaming sessions actually something to worry about? I mean, I’m not entirely sure a machine would just shut itself down at 90; wouldn't it throttle the clock speeds first and only cut out once it clears 100? Could we be looking at an issue with the power delivery or maybe some kind of electrical hiccup?
Old Dell laptop - Windows won't boot in Hardware ·
I was thinking about picking up an affordable 2.5" USB enclosure to pull my old laptop hard drive out and see what I can salvage. If the electronics haven't completely fried, I'll just plug it into another PC and migrate all my personal files over, right? Once the data is safe, my plan is to format the drive to map out those bad sectors and then repurpose it as a basic external storage unit. That way, I can finally swap in a SATA SSD and get Windows running smoothly again. Since I can't install anything directly from the damaged drive anymore, I guess I'll just have to find a workaround...😉

Zachary Nguyen2 said:Can you believe these prices? Honestly, back in the day, you could have picked up several brand-new units for what they're asking now.😵

So, I was looking at the numbers, and it seems like those MSI RX 580 8 GB gaming x cards were going for over $500 used, while those leftover "new old stock" units sitting in warehouses were hitting the $750 mark... isn't that just wild?
It looks like Ferrari is back to their old ways, falling victim to those same questionable tactical decisions we've seen before.
I suppose I should just be grateful that having 4K resolution makes watching these absolute gems a little easier on the eyes.
It seems like those commentators over at SK didn't catch a single thing, bless their hearts,

Edward Peterson70 said:The camera was designed with a PC monitor in mind rather than a television.
It features a variable output, which means you can tweak almost everything, though that’s a bit of a catch-22 when you can't actually see the on-screen menu. I might try to get the settings dialed in on a TV first and then move it over to a monitor to see if it behaves.

As for the issue regarding resolution being too high, I don't think that's quite right, because I can force a 4K signal through my PC and get it working, which is exactly why I mentioned the camera's variable output capability. It really should function just fine on monitors with lower resolutions too.

Could you be a bit more specific? What exactly do you mean by variable output, and what specific resolution and refresh rate are you setting? And what does it mean to say it was built for a PC monitor? Even an older PC monitor from ten years ago doesn't support the same resolutions we see in modern displays today.

Are you suggesting that if you set it to, say, 3840x2160 at 60 Hz on a PC, you'll actually get a clear picture on the monitor? If so, what kind of connection are you using?
Looking for keyboards with US layout? in Computer Peripherals ·
It turns out quite a few gaming keyboards come with an American layout; for instance, my SteelSeries Apex actually has one, which I picked up over at Home Depot...

Edward Peterson70 said:The PS2 HDMI converter outputs a 480i signal, and since the monitor can't upscale it—or more likely, just doesn't support interlaced video at all—we've hit a wall.

The camera on the other side boasts 48MP, so it really should be pushing a 4K signal, right? It only has an on-screen menu, which I obviously can't see for the life of me.

The monitor seems to be picking up *something*, though, because the screen stays black without even throwing a "no signal" warning.

Well, it looks like you answered your own question regarding the PS2; I had mistakenly assumed the adapter would convert everything to a progressive signal. As for that Samsung monitor, since it lacks an HDMI port and feels like a bit of a vintage model, its resolution is definitely under 1080p, probably utilizing a single-link DVI. Given that it’s clearly PC-centric, isn't it perfectly logical that it wouldn't recognize standard television video signals, let alone any modern 4K input?

It’s possible the camera is pumping out a 50 Hz signal, which a lot of monitors just aren't built to handle. Have you tried checking the settings to see if you can switch that HDMI output over to 60 Hz? There might also be an issue with the PlayStation 2 itself, or perhaps the signal is getting lost because you're running it through two different adapters at once.
How do you clean your keyboard? in Computer Peripherals ·
Just grab a hairdryer on its highest setting, some cotton soaked in rubbing alcohol, and stick it onto a toothpick or a paperclip... honestly, it’s almost ridiculous how well it works. I mean, isn't that probably the most effective 😬

You might find some better advice regarding GPUs further up if you have a budget of around $300 or more, which seems to be what you were asking about earlier. Ultimately, though, it all really comes down to what you actually need the card for, doesn't it?
Monitor buying guide (mega-thread) in Computer Peripherals ·
I feel like 200% scaling is just way too much, but then again, 1440p feels a bit low for a 27" screen if you’re actually trying to get that crisp, pixel-free look—you know, that "Retina display" effect Apple is always talking about... though honestly, isn't 4K on anything smaller than 27" a bit overkill? Unless, of course, you're incredibly nearsighted and prefer staring at your monitor from about two inches away...

Jesse Sanchez4 said:I’m really tempted to pick up a 27" 4K monitor and just crank the scaling up to 200%. Has anyone here actually tried running a setup like that?

Honestly, 150% should be plenty. What’s the real issue here? Are there problems with it? Well, yeah, there can be, especially when you start dealing with older software that doesn't play nice with high DPI settings...

boldpilot5 said:Alright, so we've pretty much settled on the fact that the RTX 3050 is the better value if you can find one for around 2 $0.00, but here's the thing—there are quite a few options floating around in that $200 to 2 $167 range, so which one actually stands out as the smartest buy? What specific specs should I be digging into to figure out which card is superior, and which numbers really matter when you're comparing them?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can share! 🙂

Honestly, just go with whichever one is the cheapest...

granitecrane2 said:Does anyone actually know what sets the T600 apart from the T1000? On paper, they look identical to me, yet there's such a massive $333 gap in price. That said, they seem like decent cards, especially if you're primarily focused on workstation software.
I have to admit, one thing in these discussions always trips me up: why would anyone suggest an Intel i3? Do people honestly believe the CPU doesn't matter and that the GPU is going to shoulder the entire workload?

The specs aren't actually the same:

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/t600.c3796

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/t1000.c3797

The T600 has 640 CUs, while the T1000 jumps up to a full 896 CUs and features higher clock speeds.

However, is the T1000 really fast enough to justify that much of a premium over the T600? I'm not so sure.

Both of them actually underperform compared to the GTX 1650 they are based on, mainly because they pull significantly less power and run at much lower clocks.

In my view, if you can grab a GTX 1650 for $667, isn't that just a smarter move for the average user than picking up either of these Quadratic options?
