It’s honestly a bit of a stretch to call it an NVIDIA RTX card since it lacks both RT and NVIDIA Tensor cores, isn't it? That being said, it does feature a fantastic NVENC encoder(!) and handles h.265 10-bit beautifully... the decoder is just as solid for almost everything, though it does fall short on AV1 support.

Joshua Garcia3 said:The price seems fair, especially considering it's a brand-new unit backed by a 36-month warranty... if the comparison you shared in your post holds true...

Since these are professional-grade cards, I wonder, can you actually use them for gaming?

I sent you a private message with more details.

If I were in your shoes, I’d move quickly because this deal at IQ probably won't last very long... you'll likely end up with an OEM version, which usually just comes in a simple cardboard box...

@Joshua Garcia3:

If I may offer a suggestion:

The NVIDIA Quadro T400

or perhaps

the NVIDIA Quadro T600:

The first option is more powerful than a GT 1030—actually about five times stronger than what you're running right now—while the second one performs roughly on par with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti. Since both utilize NVIDIA Turing architecture, they are essentially much newer than anything else you'll find at these price points, don't you think?

You might just need to pick up a miniDP adapter or whatever cable you happen to need to get everything connected.

Megan Morris70 said:So, this one comes with an adapter, right? And that’s what I’d plug directly into my laptop—that little circular jack labeled with the headphone icon?

This is the kind of laptop I'm using — that first little port on the right is the one, right?

Well, yeah, exactly. With headphones like these, you often run into needing an adapter for those larger 1/4 inch jacks too:

...I sent you the link for my own pair, but you might want to look into some other "studio" style headphones instead. Honestly, Superlux models are incredibly budget-friendly while still being more than good enough for most people:

Bryan Scott4 said:Hey there,

My power supply (CM ACAA 600W) finally gave up the ghost, so I'm hunting for a replacement.

The rig isn't exactly brand new (GA990, R9 270x), but everything else is still running smoothly.

Since money is a bit tight right now, if I could find something around $133 that would be perfect.

I'd suggest grabbing a 600 w Fortron like I did above, but if you really need to save some cash, you could always go with something a little less powerful:

At that listed price, they offer a 5% discount for cash payments, which means this 500W unit would end up costing you roughly $136

You’ll want to plug them into the headphone jack—that little round port you see everywhere—since those USB versions tend to be pricier due to the built-in sound card, though what you really need to focus on is finding some solid closed back headphones like these:

After all, isn't the whole point to get a pair that actually blocks out the rest of the world?

I honestly can't recall the exact moment I picked up this Chuck, but it’s certainly been around for a good 13 to 15 years now—let's just say I've had it roughly three and a half times longer than the age mentioned above. If memory serves, I originally grabbed it to pair with an Athlon... it has performed perfectly fine with every single build I've put together until now, isn't that just the way it goes? It was only recently that it finally hit a wall with that one specific effect in Resolve... everything else, from my usual benchmarks to running Unigine Heaven and Superposition, has consistently scored a perfect five.

granitecrane2 said:Well, if "standard practice" at your company is just code for ignorance, then sure, I'll admit I have absolutely no clue what your version of "best practices" entails.
Which part of my explanation did you miss regarding how the final export comes from the raw footage, while a proxy is merely used during the editing process as a lightweight substitute—usually at a much lower resolution to save resources?
It’s honestly no surprise that the animation and film industry here in America is struggling, and advertising is falling apart too, when this is the kind of "professionalism" being practiced.

You’re certainly firing on all cylinders today, aren't you? It seems like you've completely lost the thread of our actual argument because you're just arguing for the sake of arguing now. Why don't you take a step back, look over what we actually discussed, and try telling me again that you don't need more than 6GB of VRAM? I explained quite clearly that you need it when rendering the final product, and you certainly need it even when working with proxies that match the original resolution. Even if you are working with half-resolution files, there are times when you absolutely have to see how an effect looks at full resolution because, wouldn't you know it, the result doesn't always look the same... and then suddenly, your software throws a "GPU memory full" error right in your face.

Please, feel free to swoop in and save the entire American animation and film industry (🤦) just by using proxies. It’s clear you have a very firm grasp on the situation, provided we ignore the fact that you don't actually have a clue what you're talking about.

I'm still a little lost here—did they actually offer those to you personally at a discount? Because looking at the links you shared, I don't see how those components would actually pair up with that configuration.

VA panels tend to perform much better when you're playing games with lots of dark, moody scenes, which is really the only real drawback here. It’s also probably worth opting for a curved screen just to minimize those color shifts and contrast issues near the edges... But I'm not sure I quite follow your logic, since monitors aren't typically bundled with these specific setups; they're more of an add-on purchase, so you can honestly pick whichever one you prefer 🤷

I have this strange feeling that it’s been with me forever, even though I'm certainly not exactly a spring chicken myself.🤣

So, I finally had to swap out my power supply because my RX580 kept crashing my whole system during specific tasks in DaVinci Resolve—specifically when using Optical flow Speedwarp. It seems like those settings trigger some massive power spikes on the GPU, which was pretty confusing since my monitoring graphs showed the GPU never actually pulled more than about 160W.
I decided to go with the FSP Hydro k Pro 600 w, and honestly, the crashes have completely stopped. 👍 Looking back at my old Chieftec unit, it was rated for 550 W, but if you check the specs, those three 12V rails only added up to 380 W total. 🤦 This new one, on the other hand, delivers a solid 600W on a single 12V rail.

lonecrane7 said:Hey everyone. I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, and I noticed that whenever I boot up my PC, the fan on the card spins up for a few seconds and then just stops. Is the fan actually broken, or is it designed to only kick in when it's really needed?

It only kicks in when necessary... that brief spin at startup before everything goes quiet is perfectly normal behavior for cards with a zero RPM mode.
I don't want to get too bogged down in the weeds or start a deep dive investigation here, but it really looks like they're only showing items that are physically sitting in their local warehouse right now. It seems those listed as being "in stock at the supplier" aren't actually available for immediate grab, which probably means the inventory is tucked away in a distribution center somewhere in the Midwest or maybe even out in the Pacific Northwest.
Aren't those processors specifically intended for OEM use rather than being sold directly to individual consumers? That would explain why the database doesn't list them among the standard products available to the general public.

If you can't get it sorted, you can actually just keep using Windows without activation, though you won't be able to swap out your wallpaper or tweak a few other minor settings...

The "Activate Windows" watermark will pop up in the bottom right corner, but I have a feeling it might eventually disappear on its own. From what I understand, there isn't really any legal issue with running unactivated Windows for your personal use, is there?

On my main workstation, I'm running legally activated Windows (not the OEM only version), but on my secondary machine—which mostly just functions as a render node—I've left it unactivated, so that little watermark in the corner doesn't bother me at all.
At the end of the day, you really have to shell out a significant amount of cash just to get decent hardware these days, whereas when it comes to software and gaming, there are always ways to make things work within a tighter budget, don't you think? 😬
$2,500 Gaming Build for 1080p 144Hz in Desktops ·
Are you running out of horizontal space or something? I was actually just about to suggest picking up a 1080p ultrawide monitor for you.
By the way, I’ve been wondering, do you really think you need those massive AAA titles to justify jumping up to 4K resolution?
melloweagle28 said:You’re asking quite a few questions, 🙂
I can definitely tell on my phone that things look much smoother when it's running at 120Hz (wherever that's supported).
And I know with a TV, when you're watching sports, there's a massive difference during those fast action sequences.
So, I'm guessing it works the same way here?

Right now, I'm using an ASUS G27QC.

.

Yeah, you basically just confirmed exactly what I was thinking. On those standard 60Hz screens—which most phones still use—that 24 fps footage just looks choppy.

When it comes to sports on a TV, the difference usually comes down to less motion blur, because once you hit 50 fps, everything feels incredibly fluid; TVs often use motion interpolation to "invent" extra frames (so instead of 50 fps, you're seeing something closer to 100 fps), but most monitors don't typically have that kind of feature built-in. I wasn't sure, though—do you and your brother share this PC or something? Because if it's running that Intel chip, there might be an option in the software to help with that.

That ASUS sounds like a solid choice, though perhaps mainly for gaming, but I'll let someone else weigh in since there are so many similar monitors out there.
melloweagle28 said:It’s really not my thing; I’m actually looking at this for my brother.
He mostly plays LoL and Civ6, though he’s using a laptop right now. He might upgrade his desktop setup eventually, but he definitely isn't interested in competitive online FPS games—just things like MOBAs and similar titles.
A 144Hz refresh rate isn't a strict requirement for him. Maybe 120Hz would be enough if he plans on streaming or watching movies?

But why bother with 120 Hz just for movies shot at 24 fps? Are we talking about a 5:5 pull down effect? Honestly, a lot of monitors can handle 48 Hz if you just take a moment to set up a custom resolution.
