Just get an SSD
Jessica Wells2 said:Of course dust can be an issue, and in your case, that's likely the culprit. Generally speaking, cleaning out dust and reapplying thermal paste isn't covered under warranty, but even back home in the US, that wouldn't cost much, so it shouldn't be a big deal in America either.
But 4 to 6 weeks? I always assumed service centers were just slow in the states. What exactly are they planning to do? You mentioned the GPU is overheating. Most likely, the service center will tear the laptop down, blow out the dust, and then run some stress tests to see how the graphics card behaves. If the issue persists, they'll swap out the thermal paste. Then comes more testing, and if it still fails, they'll replace the graphics card entirely.

Knowing how service rates work—where you're paying for labor rather than actual parts—if a place in Austria is anything like one in Germany, all that "work" mentioned above is going to cost him an absolute fortune. And let’s be real, he clearly doesn't have that kind of cash lying around. If he did, he wouldn't be hanging out here hoping someone can fix an invisible Hardware issue for free in five minutes...

edit

Here's the deal:

tldr; if you actually give a damn about Hardware and troubleshooting, just watch the video.
This guy is convinced his GPU is shot, so he sends just the card—not the whole PC—to a "repair center" because... well, he's just that sure. After they test it on an entirely different PC, run benchmarks, swap the thermal paste, and whatnot... turns out the graphics card is perfectly fine...

Pro tip:
If you have even a shred of technical curiosity, go to YouTube, type in your laptop model, and pair it with something like "How to clean out dust inside your laptop." I'm positive you'll find at least one video for your specific model—or at least something similar—showing you exactly how to open it up and clean it yourself.
Jeremy Lopez57 said:You could try pulling your files back with Active File Recovery Professional. Honestly, the software is top-tier and works pretty fast. I actually managed to recover an entire drive that Windows saw as totally empty—it just showed zero data—but AFR Pro saw everything and pulled it all back without a single hiccup.

Alright, thanks for the tip. Once I'm actually in the thick of it, I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes.
vividstag16 said:Basically, I might be able to pull the data myself using some free software. Any recommendations?

The reality is, the drive is just failing to write properly 🤣

I'm gonna try a bit of DIY, hit up the forum help desk, maybe swing by a local repair shop, then come back and try a little more on my own.

Anyway, this whole mess is getting more interesting by the minute 🍿

It's funny how the tech support guys over at Best Buy won't even bother reading the full post—they just skim the last sentence with the question mark and spend five days throwing random solutions at the wall like they're coming out of a cable duct.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Let's see how many days it takes for the help desk to actually fix this one.
PC won't boot up in IT Support ·
This is exactly my favorite way to deal with "problems"—solutions just fly out of people's mouths left and right, yet here we are, still hunting for an actual fix five days later. 🍿🍿🍿

It’s like when some guy hits you up on WhatsApp with this, claiming it’s been broken for an hour and expecting me to somehow fix it remotely over the phone...

That’s like having my check engine light pop up, snapping a photo, texting it to my mechanic, and honestly expecting him to diagnose the whole damn engine based on one blurry picture... 😵

Been away from the forum for two months. Just came back and was immediately reminded why I left...

It took me an entire hour just to send one DM, open four different threads, and drop two posts...

The forum is still running on version v3.8.4—that's some ancient tech from way back in 2009...

GG 👍

It's a damn shame I don't have enough free time to keep up with all these threads 🍿🍿

The mods here clearly have no clue what HTTPS even means 🤦

I mean, just look at how outdated this entire site is...

They haven't even updated past v3.8.4 since back in 2009...

The admins are completely useless... the site settings are just a joke, honestly...

One day the search function is totally broken, the next it's back but you have to sit there for a full minute between every single query... 😵

We're running on version 3.8.4—stuff that basically came out back in 2009. 🤦

And don't even get me started on the security...

You scored a hell of a deal there. 👍

The cheapest SSD 8 TB you can find usually runs you around $700, depending on where you're shopping. You basically pocketed about $650 in savings here. 👍

How to insert rows in Excel in IT Support ·
ruggedheron67 said:Hello,
I am encountering an issue where I am unable to insert a row above my selected line.
When I select the row and attempt to use the insert command, nothing happens. I am currently working in Excel 2002.
The only way I can successfully insert a row is by placing it beneath the selection.
If anyone happens to know a solution, I would appreciate the assistance.

Just select the row above the one you want and then hit insert.

Like, if you need a blank row right above row 10, just highlight row 9 and hit insert—then you'll have your empty row sitting right above row 10.

Seriously, there isn't a single day where I don't hit an HTTP 504 Gateway Timeout at least twenty times out of thirty clicks. 🤦
