Lakers routine. ☕

Woke up at 5 a.m. by chance—fired up the computer to check the score, only to find we were already in the final minute. If Barnes had knocked down just one free throw about 30 seconds before the buzzer, maybe there would have been a fighting chance. As it stands, nothing.

Sorry, graniteotter6, looks like I was wrong after all. 😁

I didn't—look, I just felt strongly about this one, so I placed the bet. 😁

I have no intention of getting back into gambling full-time. Maybe I'll throw something down once every couple of days. 😁

Let's not turn this thread into an argument; besides, I've got to head out. Bokić, out. 👋

It seems like new NBA fanatics are popping up everywhere lately—like mushrooms after a heavy rain. 👍

James Taylor3 said:While looking for some lines for the league, I noticed the Lakers are sitting at -8.5 tonight. This feels like an easy cover—the Blazers are essentially running a new roster, one that’s arguably worse than what they had before. They are desperate on the road and struggle immensely on back-to-backs. Plus, they lack the interior presence to deal with Gasol and Bynum, both of whom have been playing lights out lately. To make matters worse, Aldridge logged 40 minutes last night, while Batum and Matthews both cleared 35—they aren't going to have much left in the tank for tonight.

While I was looking for some league lines, I noticed the Lakers handicap is sitting at -8.5 tonight. Honestly, I think it’s an easy cover—the Blazers basically have a brand new roster, and frankly, they aren't any better than they were before. They're absolutely abysmal on the road, just as bad when playing on the second night of a back-to-back, and they simply lack the size to deal with Gasol and Bynum, both of whom have been playing lights out lately. Plus, Aldridge logged 40 minutes last night, while Batum and Matthews both cleared 35—they aren't going to find it easy tonight.

Arthur Hill2 said:The Blazers are on a roll—four or five wins in a row now.

Also, this is one of those games where it’s in Portland's best interest to lose—better odds for a higher draft pick—while Milwaukee needs the win to stay neck-and-neck with the Knicks for that eighth seed.

That isn't entirely accurate; the trades and the firing were all part of a total rebuild because the roster simply wasn't competitive. They moved Oden, Camby, and Wallace (who netted them a great pick), and now they’ll likely enter full tank mode to stack up more losses.

At this point, it’s just LaMarcus Aldridge and me hoping for a playoff spot. ☕

Arthur Hill2 said:I don't see the issue with accepting that it’s smarter for the Blazers to lose right now than to win.

Tanking isn't about players shooting with their eyes closed or chasing loose balls—it’s about weakening the roster strategically to build a powerhouse later. That’s exactly what the Portland front office did when they moved on from Camby and Wallace. Unless anyone actually believes Okur and Williams are going to save this season, we have to face reality. You have locals in Portland rooting against their own team, watching bottom-feeders play poorly, and yet people are still arguing that a 12th-place Western Conference team in total disarray has a legitimate shot at the playoffs 🙂.

As far as I'm concerned, the debate is over.

Eric Fox7 summed it up perfectly.

It isn't "smarter" to lose—that much is obvious.
Portland intentionally cleared the decks to target next season, but there’s zero reason for them to tank intentionally now. They'll push for the playoffs, likely miss out, but let's not call it tanking.

Besides, they’ve already stacked up enough picks for the upcoming draft...

And frankly, this current squad isn't the disaster some make it out to be. They didn't earn a spot in the Bulls' orbit for nothing. You still have an All-Star in Aldridge, a rising star in Batum, Crawford playing like one of the top five players in the league, and a few others. Sure, the roster with Camby and Wallace was miles ahead, but even these Blazers are significantly better than the Bobcats, Raptors, Wizards, Kings, or Hornets.
There is no way they drop to the absolute bottom of the West in these final 20 games. ☕

The percentage gaps are negligible. And honestly, don't believe everything you read on internet forums—there’s a massive amount of nonsense out there, including on this very board. 😉

Eric Fox7 said:Right now, there are 10 teams worse than Portland (two of whom have playoff potential), which means Portland should realistically finish somewhere around 9th or 10th among the worst. Whether they land at 14th or 9th, the difference in winning percentage is only 1.2%.

Eric Fox7 said:Just a quick note on how this works—teams that make the playoffs get to choose their picks from the 15th to 30th slots, meaning they’re completely out of the lottery rotation. As for the teams that miss the postseason, the math is simple: more balls in the hopper means better odds. Essentially, the worse your record, the higher your shot at landing that number one pick.

The NBA Draft Lottery—a high-stakes mechanism designed to prevent bottom-tier teams from stacking talent through predictable draft orders. It’s a system built on weighted odds, ensuring that while the worst teams have the best shot at a superstar, the process remains somewhat unpredictable. It effectively mitigates the "tanking" culture by keeping the top picks within reach for more than just the absolute basement dwellers. Simple, mathematical, and occasionally controversial.

As for Portland—it's practically irrelevant whether they finish with the worst record or the tenth worst. The probability margins for that number one overall pick are negligible at this stage. They’re better off putting their energy into fighting for a playoff spot.

That's that. 👍

The Blazers have stacked up plenty of picks for next season—and given how the rest of the league is shaping up, they aren't looking at a total basement collapse, just a slight slide in the standings. 🤷

I suspect they’ll aim for the playoffs, though with this specific roster led by that fanatic Felton ( 🤦 ), that’s going to be an uphill battle.

Arthur Hill2, take a look at the NBA fantasy threads. ☕

If Portland doesn't clean up this mess they're making of the Knicks, they should be out of here by 3 PM.

Watch out for Carmelo Anthony over—Batum and Wallace are more than capable of shutting him down.

We might see Aldridge, Batum, and Jeremiah in the lineup tonight.

A few interesting stats for you:

This season, the average comeback rate sits at 24.6%—meaning roughly one out of every four games sees the halftime leader end up losing the matchup.

Looking at second-half comebacks specifically, the Golden State Warriors have been part of this trend in half of their games—17 out of 34, to be exact—where they either erase a deficit or get erased in those final 24 minutes.

The data comes from this article: http://nbaovertime.com/statisticke-a...rnetsi-gube-40

It’s worth a read if you want to see which teams are most prone to these kinds of swings. 😉

Joshua Gonzalez33 said:I'm not saying your bets won't hit—in fact, I like both of them, especially the second one—but it still sticks out.

1) The Lakers are the second-best at defending the PG position in the entire NBA. Rubio has gone 3-8, 1-7, and 1-8 over his last three games, and in two of those, he only managed 4 and 6 assists, which is frankly a disaster.
2) Charlotte sits right in the middle of the NBA when it comes to points allowed to PGs.

Look, stats are ruthless, but they don't tell the whole story. Fisher is a liability on defense—quick guards tear him apart—but I recently read somewhere that Rubio is ranked as the second fastest player in the league (behind Parker); I'll drop the link if I can find it. A huge part of how the Lakers defend the PG position actually comes down to their frontcourt—specifically Bynum, who is an elite defender and shot blocker. Most players respect that Lakers frontline, which keeps them from driving straight into the paint.

Joshua Gonzalez33 said:If you seriously think Portland could be in the mix, I think betting the 2-pointer at 2.30 pays better than taking the +3.5 at 1.85. Long-term, that's the smarter play rather than chasing small spreads. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if this game stays under 184.5, based on the USA sportsbook lines.🤷

Signed. 👍

Since I'm on a roll, let me quote you one more time:

Joshua Gonzalez33 said:Batum over 14.5 at 1.85
-Aldridge is going to have a rough time against KG and Bass. It’s unlikely Wallace does much here, and Felton isn't much either—plus Rondo is in the mix, so I could see Batum hitting closer to 20.

True, and honestly, you should probably look at the Under for Pierce too. Given his recent performances, the line is bound to be high. He won't have an easy night today, though—he's got two top-tier defenders in Batum and Wallace waiting for him.

If I recall correctly from reading early this season, it’s one of the longest streaks in the NBA, though I can't say I'm 100% certain without checking. 😉

Found it. Here's the deal:

The Lakers have won 17 straight over the Timberwolves since a 117-107 double-overtime loss March 6, 2007. It's the NBA's longest active winning streak by one team over another.

If my memory serves, the LA Lakers have nearly 20 straight wins against the Minnesota Timberwolves—you might want to look that up if you're planning on betting tonight. 😁
I think it might be one of the longest streaks in NBA history; I read something about it earlier this season, though I can't say I'm 100% certain, so check for yourselves. 😉

I’m just hoping my Portland Trail Blazers finally manage to pick up a win. Facing the Boston Celtics would be the perfect way to boost morale. 😁

You're selling yourself out for a handful of change. ☕

If I had placed any bets last night, I would have lost everything. 🙂

The West is going to be a mess regarding the playoffs—only three teams actually have zero chance of landing that 8th seed.

Istra to fail to score at 1.65

Dinamo has only conceded two goals at Maksimir this season against MLS sides (Lokomotiva, Šibenik)—an opponent with a guaranteed tight, compact defense and zero attacking ambition. It’s a much more profitable play than just backing a Dinamo win or even looking at the handicap.

Is the defense granite—or just getting shelled? 🤷

Christian Morales40 said:Benfica-Zenit 1X 1.25
Zenit scraped through the first leg purely on grit and the freezing weather. It won't be -15 in Lisbon, though—expect a mild 52 degrees instead. Benfica has the home advantage here. For Zenit to secure a spot in the round of 16, they essentially have to match what they did against FC Porto. They parked the bus there and walked away with a 0-0 draw; I expect a similar tactical setup today.

I watched the first match. Zenit was actually much better—they didn't just win on grit; they created plenty of high-quality chances and looked far more convincing. To be fair, Zenit's keeper is responsible for both goals—his reactions were abysmal on both occasions. You can find the highlights on YouTube if you want to see for yourself. Not sure if he's starting again today, though—check the lineup.

On another note, I've watched almost all of Benfica's matches over the last month or so (aside from that loss to FC Porto). My takeaway? They aren't playing well. They aren't creating nearly as many openings as they did earlier in the season, the defense has lost its edge, and their finishing is poor. Simply put: they’re struggling.

9/10

Remember how Miami struggled in the West last postseason? They were dropping games to anyone and everyone, including teams like the Golden State Warriors.

The Blazers tend to show up for these kinds of home matchups—don't write them off just yet, even if their recent play hasn't been great. 😁

wiredcanyon39 said:The Dallas offensive engine is finally firing—mostly thanks to Dirkules, who’s channeling his old postseason magic and staying consistently over the mark lately. Given that Kris Humphries might be a question mark for tonight's matchup, leaving Brook to handle the interior alone is a risk. There's a solid chance the Mavs pull off another win with Dirk playing out on the wing. Their real issue is aging; they're going to need a generational shift eventually. They've been somewhat erratic offensively this season, averaging about 99 points per game while giving up roughly 97. I picked these lines because the spreads feel a bit tight—especially the over for the total score.

Where did you get that number for Dallas' points allowed?
I know they're one of the top defensive units in the league this year, so I double-checked—they're only giving up 90.82 points per game. 🤷
