Honestly, Microsoft is the one really screwing us over regarding XP. If you're just using it for home use, any standard XP copy from a torrent site will be more than enough.

He doesn't need to pull it from Microsoft's servers. He can grab it right here. Like you can see, the site is clean—there's zero mention of cracking, illegal activation, or anything like that. 😉

Your Phenom is going to fry first because it's being inadequately cooled and running way past manufacturer limits, rather than some overclocked chip that's actually properly cooled despite the higher voltage.

That’s a massive hurdle when everyone has high-speed internet these days. An installation for Windows XP is only about 700 megabytes.

My Phenom never touched an overclocked clock speed in its life. When I list it on Craigslist, it'll be a much better buy than some unstable, overclocked Phenom from the same era.

How do you mean there aren't any drivers? Here's the deal: they haven't officially released any for Windows 7, and there's a good reason for that. This laptop needs to go back to XP. Grab these drivers and put them on a USB drive—or at least do that with the network driver first. Then install XP, use that driver to get online, download the rest, and you're done.

Look, that setup is strictly for running Windows XP with all the bells and whistles turned off (Adjust for best performance). You can't even dream of running Windows 7 on this.

Good grief, I honestly can't wrap my head around you. How do you not realize that you are well within your rights to shut down some arrogant guy who's whining because he can't open an OpenDocument file on his Microsoft Office 2003?! If he's such a die-hard devotee of the Microsoft suite, he should upgrade to a modern version that actually handles OpenDocument without breaking a sweat. Some cheapskate clinging to Microsoft Office 2003 shouldn't be allowed to dictate the standard for everyone else in America.

EDIT - Drew Allen77, are you really that dense? If you select any other option in that dialog box that pops up always (unless you're running some sketchy pirated "ultra-mega edition" of Office) during a new installation, then by default, Office will save in OpenDocument format!

That’s just not true. Every version of Microsoft Office, starting right from Microsoft Office 2010, asks you during the initial launch which file format you want to set as the default: Office Open XML or OpenDocument. It works that way. Like this. I’m sure you saw that already. Regardless of which path you take, Microsoft Office 2010 and anything newer have native support for OpenDocument formats—they can save and open them without a hitch. Even Office 2007 handles it reasonably well. So, you don't get to claim otherwise; those sticking with Microsoft can play nice with the folks following the standards and using OpenDocument.

Not many people actually need Microsoft Office. In all my years, I’ve never once found myself needing those specific features when LibreOffice does the job just fine.
