Ubuntu is running slow in IT Support ·
Hi there.

I went ahead and nuked my swap partition on openSUSE, though I’m not entirely sure if that was the right move. Regardless, I’ve decided to run a Secure Erase on my SSD to boost performance before installing a different OS—specifically Fedora Security Lab (reasoning being the niche purpose of the OS and how it stacks up against "Fedora/openSUSE" here). What I really want to know is: can I use the hdparm utility within the Fedora Security Lab Live environment to perform the Secure Erase, just so I can get Fedora installed on the SSD afterward? Also, is switching to Fedora actually a smart play? P.S. I tried the Fedora Live environment earlier and couldn't get the WLAN to connect—not through the GUI, nor via the CLI.

driftingcanyon2, any chance you could recommend a distro?

I installed openSUSE Leap. However, I've run into a boot issue. Instead of launching straight into the GUI, it hangs at the GRUB screen—where I have to type "exit," which then dumps me into a "boot..." menu where I manually select the boot device. Only after that does the actual openSUSE Leap selection screen finally show up. Also, one more thing: why am I being prompted for a password every single time I try to connect to Wi-Fi? It’s not asking for my Wi-Fi password, either; it’s some random credential from a digital wallet or something. I typed "free" into the terminal and it told me I have 2GB of swap. Should I just wipe the swap to speed things up?

It’s sluggish regardless of whether it’s running in a VM or not. Do you actually think a full reinstall would be worth the effort?

The thing is, the machine was already sluggish—until I bumped up the swap file. Since then, it’s been running smoothly. That is, until I started running a VM. It has an SSD, and I assigned the memory based on what I assumed was the "RAM" setting (under the Motherboard tab)—which in this case was 2GB. Using VMware. VRAM 128MB, 2/8 Cores, CPU Limit 100%.

Greetings,

I'm running Windows 10 with the Windows Desktop environment. I've been running Kali inside a VM—specifically using an Alienware m15 equipped with 8GB of RAM. To compensate, I bumped my swapfile up to 16GB. Everything was running smoothly at first, but after a while, the system speed just cratered—both the host and the guest. It’s this sudden lag in response to inputs; everything feels like it's trailing by a few milliseconds, which is driving me absolutely insane. I'd appreciate some insight from the experts here. I'm no pro, but could this potentially be tied to the GPU drivers?
Can a Wi-Fi owner monitor other users' traffic? in IT Support ·
Greetings,

I have a question regarding legalities—is a Wi-Fi subscriber legally allowed to intercept my communications? This is someone I share an internet bill with since we split the monthly cost. The situation is taking place in Germany. Thanks in advance.
Should I stick with Google? Yes or No? in IT Support ·
Hey there.

I'm wondering if it's actually smart to sign up for something like Evernote using a Google account, or if I should just stick to a standard email registration. What are the real pros and cons when it comes to using Google for SSO?

Thanks in advance!
Amazon Gift Card code is showing as invalid in IT Support ·
I've got two $20 Amazon Gift Cards I'm trying to redeem on my Google Account, but I keep getting an error message every single time.
If anyone knows what's going on, I'd appreciate the help.

So, can I just pick up the version that supports GSM? Based on my best guess—which might be wrong—I should be looking for the A6003 model. Is that the International version, or does the model number have nothing to do with the network compatibility?
ironcyclist58 said:You really need to dig into the specific phone you're looking at to see how those two versions actually differ.

I'm looking at getting an onaj plus 6. Not sure if I should go with the GSM or CDMA version.
Look, I’m planning to pick up a smartphone through Amazon, but I’m stuck on which version I actually need to ensure it works with an American SIM card. Should I go with the International version or the Western European one? This is a major dealbreaker for me—I really don't want to end up with a useless brick because I picked the wrong model.

Hey. I've got Kali Linux flashed onto a USB drive. Tried to burn Linux Mint over it—ran into some errors—and now the system won't even recognize the drive.

I’m looking to read some American editions of books on my device. Is there any way to purchase books through GameStop here in the US?

Thanks in advance!

Hey there.

I'm looking for some advice—what’s the best entry-level multimeter to pick up? I plan on troubleshooting PCs, laptops, smartphones, and various other handheld devices. Thanks.

I need to fill out an email attachment form in .p7m format. Is there any way to actually open a file with a .p7m extension on Android?
HP laptop keeps shutting down randomly in IT Support ·
Jumping back into this thread—my IBM laptop has a dead battery. It won't stay powered once I unplug the cord, and I'm getting those "CMOS settings wrong" and "CMOS Date/Time not set" errors during bootup, which pretty much confirms the CMOS battery is shot too. The real headache, though, is the system just shutting down randomly after a bit of use. I'm assuming overheating isn't the culprit here. If I swap in a fresh main battery and a new CMOS, will that actually fix the shutdown issue?

Jumping back into this thread—I’m dealing with an IBM laptop where the battery is shot; it won't hold a charge once you unplug the AC adapter. On top of that, I’m getting those annoying "CMOS settings wrong" and "CMOS Date/Time not set" errors every time I boot up, which pretty clearly points to a dead CMOS battery. The real headache, though, is the random shutdowns after it's been running for a bit. I'm assuming overheating isn't the culprit here—would swapping out the CMOS battery actually fix the boot errors and the stability issues?
