GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
I think there's a mistake in the AMD listing; the description says GDDR3 while the title claims GDDR5, but it’s actually just a GTS 450 with GDDR3 😉

The main difference is memory speed (since it's the same card), though I guess GDDR5 might be about 15% faster in games or something...
All the brands are pretty solid, so you usually just grab whichever one is cheapest. ASUS cards are way overpriced here because of huge markups—I think Best Buy handles their imports or something, but I'm not entirely sure...

If you want to be 100% sure, you might want to look into getting a brand new 🙂

It’s honestly one of the better AM3 boards out there, and the price seems pretty fair 😉

I guess if you're planning for an upgrade down the road, you could always grab an AM3+ board for $233...

Bryan Collins96 said:Hey there! I’m looking to upgrade my graphics card. I don't know much about expansion slots and I really don't want to give anyone bad advice, but I'm currently running an Nvidia gforce4 mx440. If anyone knows anything... I was thinking about picking up an Nvidia gt440. Here is my current setup:
-intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.4GHz
-1534 MB RAM
-300W MS power supply
-BIOS version from 2003
I can check any local shops here in Chicago and I have $267 to spend—that's what I found the card for on eBay.

If I were you, I'd probably just hold onto that $267 and save up for a whole new build. You could practically get something like this for just a couple hundred bucks:

1 x Asrock M3A UCC - AMD 480 x CrossFire, AMD SB600, ATX, FSB 1000
1 x AMD Athlon ii X2 255 processor, AM3 socket, BOX, 2MB cache, 65W
1 x Kingston DDR3 2048MB (2GB), 1333MHz, CL9, FLFE85F-B8EE9
1 x Chicony HPD4802RWR2 power supply, ATX 2.2, 12cm fan, 430W
1 x Sapphire HD 5670, 512MB GDDR5 128bit, DL-DVI-I+HDMI+DP, PCIx 16x
1 x SAMSUNG 320GB HDD 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300, F1, HD32
1 x Gigabyte GZ-KX1, midi tower, no PSU, black, USB, Firewire, 1×120
1 x LG GH22NP DVD burner, 22x DVD±R, 8x DL, 40x CD-R, PATA, black

$735

This setup would probably be ten times more powerful than your old one.🙂
PC Build/Repair: Fixing up my old rig in Desktops ·
1 x ASRock 970 Extreme4, AM3+, AMD 970 + SB950 - 4 x DDR3 2100(OC)
1 x AMD Athlon II X3 450 processor, AM3 socket, BOX, 1.5MB cache
1 x XFX Core edition 80+ 450W PSU - EasyRail technology
1 x XFX HD6850 775M 1GB DDR5, DisplayPort x2 v1.2, DVI x2, HDMI 1.4a
1 x 4GB (1x4GB) Kingmax DDR3, 1333MHz

$990

The AM3+ motherboard offers some decent room for future upgrades, and you've got 4GB of RAM. I suppose if this rig is as old as it looks, getting a fresh power supply is probably a smart move. It’s a pretty capable CPU too—you could always swap it out for a Bulldozer later on 😉

It might run, but I’m thinking you’d be stuck on low settings... the processor is a bit weak. I guess you could try overclocking it a little, but you'd have to let me know what kind of power supply you're running. If it's just one of those cheap ones that comes built into the case, it's probably junk. You'd likely need to invest a bit more if you're actually looking for a decent gaming experience. 😉

The amount of VRAM on a card isn't really the most important factor when it comes to raw power. ☕

The card itself is fine, though I guess it really depends on what you're looking for and what else is in your rig (CPU, PSU, RAM, motherboard?)... that 1GB version won't be any faster unless you're pushing 1080p resolution or higher...

I think this one is about 15-20% faster than the GTX series🙂

If that’s a bit too steep for you, maybe check this one out—it’s cheaper and actually has a better cooler😉

stormywolf39 said:I guess that LC Power Silent Giant Green Power 560W is basically on par with the XFX 450W when you look at what's actually coming off the 12V rail. 😁

Their power supplies usually show a slightly lower amperage on the 12V rail, though I guess they could probably push quite a bit more than that if they had to. 😛

wanderingviper7 said:In my opinion, jumping from an 8800gts to a GTX 1050 or an HD 7770 isn't really much of an upgrade. It feels like a waste of cash.

I'd have to agree; those cards are maybe 20% faster, which I guess isn't worth the price tag...

Maybe picking up an HD 6790 for about $300 would actually be worth it. 🙂

I need a new power supply. I know Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, and Xilence are options, so I’d rather go with something high-end if possible. PLEASE let me know what you suggest.

I fixed your component list for you.😬

Personally, I’d probably suggest the LC Power Silent Giant Green Power. Their series is roughly on par with XFX, but the price is actually pretty reasonable.🙂

He really should have... he totally blew two sets of yellows during qualifying. 🙂

I guess maybe they were operating on some kind of crazy logic where they thought someone could just run about 30 laps on the super softs and match what Vettel and Button did on the softs? 😂

Maybe he was saving his tires so much that he ended up being a bit slower on the softer compound? In my opinion, if he was already on the super softs and then went back out again, he should have burned through them for about 10 or 11 laps, built up a 10-second gap, and then caught up right behind Sebastian Vettel. I honestly doubt he wouldn't have won... if it hadn't been for that spin. 😢

🤔

It looks like they don't have it in stock right now, though. It just says to check availability...

Check this one out... I'm not entirely sure how it stacks up against the 8800GTS, but they're probably pretty similar 🙂

Jacob Jones782 said:Hey crimsonstag84, what’s your take on the EVGA NVIDIA GeForce with an 860 MHz core clock versus the EVGA NVIDIA GeForce?

The HD 6850 is definitely the powerhouse of that trio, way stronger than the HD 6790.☕

And by the way, when you asked which card was best for around $367, I suggested the HD 6850, so I'm not sure why we're guessing now? 😛

Here's my setup:
The ASUS M4N68T motherboard.
The AMD Phenom II x4 970 at 3.5 GHz.
Maybe 4GB of DDR3 RAM is enough, I guess.
I was thinking about picking up this XFX AMD Radeon HD 6790 with 1GB of DDR5—it's got an 840 MHz core clock and a 4200 MHz memory clock. Maybe it might work for what I need. $338

I think this might be what you're looking for. It seems to match up with those specs.

It’s probably about 10-15% faster than the XFX AMD Radeon HD 6790. 😉

http://www.asrock.com/mb/vga.asp?Model=775XFire-RAID If it's not listed there, does that mean my NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 won't work?
Anyway, I know this is a pretty silly question, but still...

Nah, that's just a list of cards from maybe 6 or 7 years ago when AGP slots were still a thing. You have a PCI Express slot for your GPU, which wasn't super common back then, but nowadays 99% of cards use PCI Express.🙂

I suspect that motherboard might not actually support that CPU :/
