Honestly, I’d just stick to the used market. It doesn't really make sense to sink money into something new for a rig this old...

I guess anything more powerful than that would just be wasted on the CPU anyway...

🙂

You can pick some up from here: http://www.microcenter.com/

Why would you even bother with that H50? It honestly seems to cool worse than any Noctua setup out there, plus it’s pricier and you have to jump through all those installation hoops 😛 😁

You could check out Best Buy in San Francisco, though $267 it's just okay. Prices are sort of stuck around 900-$333 for something like a GTS250 or an HD 5750, while you can get an HD 5670 or a GT 240 (DDR5) for about $233... honestly, I’d probably still look for something used... plus, you should grab a new power supply for your future build. 🙂

Just let me know what kind of power supply you're running. I'd hate for it to be some cheap junk from an MS or Linkworld unit.🙂

I realize the GPU is probably overkill for your setup, but honestly, this looks like a killer deal.😁

New:

Looking for something used, maybe an HD 4650, 7800GT, or an 8600GT...

If you're looking at a new GeForce GT 220 (the one with DDR3 memory), you really won't find anything better at that price point. Most other options in this range use a 64-bit bus, which pretty much tanks the performance...

http://www.bestbuy.com/product_info.php?c...oducts_id=7728

Personally, I’d suggest checking out the used market. For about $100-$117, you could probably snag an HD 4670 (DDR3) or maybe an HD 5570 (DDR3), both of which would be a noticeable step up from the cards you listed 😉.

Just let us know what else you're running in your build—like your CPU, motherboard, RAM, and power supply?

I did a little digging through my old PC paperwork and realized I've still got a 24-month warranty, so I'll probably just pack it up and take it back tomorrow. At the very least, it's worth a shot. I just hope the folks over at Walmart are feeling sympathetic toward someone as clueless as me 😁

If I were you, I'd try to get it fixed first. If that fails, maybe grab a GeForce GTS 450 for a bit extra; it should pair pretty well with that processor, and it'll definitely help out with those CUDA-based programs you're running 😉

Which racing wheel should I get? in Computer Peripherals ·
William Ross12 said:Yeah, I caught some clips of that on YouTube... kind of a bummer. I guess the G25 might be losing its edge then. I wonder if it's actually durable enough to last long-term? I saw the price was $433... I might just have to hunt for a used one...

Even if it’s a bit dated, it’s still a solid wheel. A buddy of mine has had his for over three years, though the force feedback finally gave out recently (which doesn't really matter much to me personally)...

For instance, I'm using a Logitech G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel, which is more of an entry-level setup for $100... the steering actually quit on me after about ten months (well within the one-year 😁 warranty period). This current one has lasted me exactly a year now. There's definitely a massive difference between wheels at such different price points, especially when it comes to how the driving actually feels 😉

Olivia Collins5 said:I think I need to swap this thing out. It doesn't just crash; it completely freezes up every other game I play, and then my speakers just start making this constant, horrible "trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise. I'm thinking about upgrading since I never had these issues back when I was running Nvidia cards. Anyone else dealing with this kind of nonsense with AMD?😠 It feels like Windows is just constantly fighting itself. To make matters worse, the people who actually designed these cards aren't releasing any patches, and they don't seem to have a clue how to fix the underlying issues anyway. I’ve been reading online that even if you manage to get everything installed, the problems tend to stick around—it's basically just a junk card at this point.😠 So, if you could give me a recommendation for something a bit more powerful from NVIDIA, that would be great.

Ah, that sound... it’s exactly what I heard on my old 8600GT. I recently upgraded to a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM, but I kept my old graphics card for the time being. Within two days, things started falling apart—I'm getting the blue screen of death saying the NVIDIA driver stopped responding. I wonder if you're seeing a blue screen of death that says the ATI display driver stopped working?

I guess it’s just one of those things where mixing new parts with older hardware causes some kind of conflict. I never really got a clear explanation for why it happened, especially since I tried everything possible to fix it. Eventually, I just gave up and switched over to AMD. 😁

Sell yours and grab this GTX 275 instead—it's an absolute beast, and honestly, the price is a steal. 😉

I'm still trying to figure out why my PC keeps hitting a blue screen of death. I guess it might be related to my graphics card, though I'm not entirely sure. It’s running an AMD Radeon HD 4800 series, specifically the Primary adapter Graphics card Manufacturer Powered by AMD Graphics chipset AMD Radeon hd 4800 Series Devica ID 9442 Vendor 1002, with ID E104 Subsystem Vendor ID 174 b Graphics bus Capability PCI express 2.0. The total Memory Bandwidth in GByte seems fine, but things just feel unstable. Maybe it's a driver issue? I'll probably just Google that for you if I can find anything useful.

Nvidia GTX 460 Hawk or Nvidia GTX 285 BFG OC ?????????

They're both floating around somewhere, but I guess I'd go with the Nvidia GTX 460 Hawk. It runs way cooler, it's newer, and it doesn't pull nearly as much power. 😉

but I'm just saying... do some reading, really look into it before you buy 👍 you don't want to make the purchase and then end up kicking yourself later...

+1

James Castillo8 said:It’s pretty lame when they drop a newer model just for it to be weaker. 😁

I guess it wasn't really meant to outperform the HD 58xx series; the HD 6850 and HD 6870 are basically just successors to the HD 5750/5770. 😁

The Radeon HD 6950/6970 should be out in two weeks, and those will actually be going head-to-head with the GeForce GTX 480/580. 😉

James Castillo8 said:Why would the 6850 be cheaper than the 5850?

It’s just a bit weaker, I guess. Personally, I’d probably grab the Radeon HD 6850 even if they were priced the same.☕

James Castillo8 said:Nvidia is better, but for that $167 little extra, I don't think there's actually a massive difference in my opinion.. http://static.techspot.com/articles-.../3Dmark_01.png the 5750 draws 220W while the Nvidia GTX 460 280W pulls more during demanding games like Crysis, where the FPS gap is maybe 20 or so. Then you have the 1GB Nvidia GTS 450 which can be $100-$67 more than the 5750, yet tests show it's only slightly better than it http://img.hexus.net/v2/graphics_car...GTS421/Cr3.png

The GTS 450 is struggling against the HD 5750 here; you basically picked an example showing how the HD 5750 is faster by just 1 FPS 😁

EDIT: That’s an overclocked version of the GTS 450; we should always be comparing stock versions 😉

darkowl72 said:you're listing this on a hardware marketplace. I'm not exactly an expert at appraising gear, but I'll take a guess: motherboard maybe $150-$67, CPU $67, RAM around $100-$50, and honestly, I have no clue about the value of the graphics card... maybe $100-$50....

Oh, and just so you know, those prices look like they're straight out of Chicago holding—over 2 million bucks including free shipping...

That GPU is actually slightly better than an 8600GTS, so I guess $67I'd personally price it at 🙂

coastaltiger2 said:Well... my absolute favorite graphics card just kicked the bucket... sigh... it was a Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 3870... I really loved that thing... we spent so much time together... nights... days... I almost felt like buying flowers for its funeral... now I'm looking for a successor... can anyone suggest something that's at least on par with it, maybe a little stronger, but won't break the bank? Hmm... anyone?

http://www.newegg.com/p/product...products_id=9150

This one's about 40-50% better than the HD 3870, plus it runs cool and stays efficient... 😉
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
To be fair, the processor is pretty decent 😉

http://www.newegg.com/p/product_info.php?c...oducts_id=9150

Or maybe go used? You could save some cash and get something slightly more powerful than the new one above:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/graphics-card-listing-1957213

Just let me know what kind of power supply you're running. What’s the brand and wattage? I guess some cheap, off-brand units might struggle to handle an AMD Radeon HD 4800 😛
