I really don't have the energy to go back and forth with you. You're being malicious and taking things totally out of context, then throwing my own behavior right back at me. I'm just not doing this.
Enjoy yourself!
Personally, I'm having a great time just listening to our national anthem along with Professor Kostelić.

👋

Look, I'm not actually *that* mean, despite what you clearly think... 😁
I honestly try my best to avoid these forum arguments. I usually just step back when I see things starting to escalate.
And more than anything, I stay away from insults.
For instance, I never use terms like "Washington, D.C. local" (except maybe once as an obvious joke) because I know how people twist those words into slurs. So even if I don't mean anything by it, I avoid them just so there's no misunderstanding.
And, say, I would never, ever call you a local chauvinist (no matter how much you exaggerate) unless you had actually called yourself that first. If that’s the impression you're giving off, well, I guess I'm just reflecting it back to you.
If you look back at what I wrote just now and what I said yesterday, it should be pretty obvious that you went way overboard with those comments about "Dalmatians." I saw this coming. I was just waiting, and I knew you were just looking for an excuse too.
What you did wasn't necessary, and it wasn't just wrong—it was insulting.
I knew this was inevitable because that's basically how I remember you.
Like, I know for a fact you get all worked up whenever they play a song from the Mediterranean Coast at some big sporting event...
Okay, so maybe it bothers you more than it bothers me. That's fine. The issue is the exaggeration and the lack of objectivity. You'll complain when Blanka hears a song from the Mediterranean Coast while competing in the Continental Cup in Miami, but you don't seem to notice when they play "Down Under" for Australians, or anything like that for other groups.
It's the same as how it doesn't bother you when they play "blue shirt" during games in Washington, D.C., or "I am from Cleveland" in Cleveland.
But the second something from the Mediterranean Coast plays in Miami, you're right there to spit on it.
None of that bothers me, but if those kinds of things truly upset you, then you should be bothered by everything, not just the stuff from the coast.
So next time, before you react to some Mediterranean Coast song again, maybe just take a beat and think about the bigger picture.
Not just about songs, but about things like this.
Because if you managed to actually get under my skin, then you know you've gone way too far.
Calling out "Dalmatians" like that was completely uncalled for.
And it's not exactly a compliment to be remembered by someone like me for the reasons I just mentioned...

The topic is Joško Vlašić vs. Ante Kostelić. I already laid out my thoughts in the first two posts—first asking if Marinovic is actually Blankin’s coach, and then taking a shot at HOO, not at people from the Mediterranean... If you actually bothered to read my other threads about Blanka, Ivanisevic, Balica, or any other athlete from the coast, you might realize that my take on sports and elite athletes has absolutely nothing to do with geography. Unlike some of you, who seem to think Ivica is just some average skier...

Come on, you don't need to start making excuses and getting all defensive right now...
And you're fully aware that everyone on this forum sees you as a total local chauvinist...
And there's a good reason for that. I don't even need to go hunting through your old posts, because I still remember exactly what you wrote...
I still remember what you wrote during the WC handball tournament, those posts about the Davis Cup in Miami, and what you said about Blanka and those Mediterranean athletes back when the Continental Cup was happening...
I still remember how you jumped straight into that thread when everyone was losing their minds because some song from the Mediterranean started playing over the speakers in a Publix back in Washington, D.C....
And I still remember so much more...
You might have a point on a few things, but you’re totally blowing it by being so biased and holding such a massive grudge against the Mediterranean...
So you're gonna drag us over something like this, but then turn a blind eye when the exact same thing happens with people on your own side...
This thread is actually a pretty great example...
The thread kicked off by immediately trashing Blanka's results, her competition, how tough the sport is, even the number of events...
You have dozens of posts just like that. They come in heaps from "your" crowd...
You didn't even react. Not one bit...
And when, after God knows how many posts like that, someone finally pops up trying to downplay Ivica's success, you wrote this...
Sandra Wilson38 said:I honestly can't believe how united the Miami crowd is on this thread... 😍 It’s actually gotten to the point where Ivica is just an average skier... 🤣

I can't say I blame Vlasic... skiing just isn't his thing, especially since he picked it up in basically two weeks... 😵

You didn't feel like reaching out before...
You just had to go and start a thread about people from the Mediterranean... just went for the throat like that. No reason, no context, nothing...
That was just a bit too much for you to handle...
Just because one guy posted something doesn't mean you have to jump straight to judging everyone and generalizing...
Time to play dirty. You called me out too, based on nothing but lies and things I don't even believe... Especially since you targeted me just for being a guy from the Mediterranean...
I felt insulted...
So you're saying you aren't devaluing it?...
So what's this then...
Sandra Wilson38 said:I mean, look at Blanka... when she steps onto the court, she’s basically done in five 50-second bursts. Meanwhile, Nadal is out there grinding for five 50-minute stretches. It’s all pretty much the same thing, really... 😁
If we factor in that Blanka plays those 5x50' sets about 20 times a year, how many matches does he actually play in a season... 🤔

dustypanther6 said:The rules are meant to compare similar kinds of achievements. If Karlović had pulled off two Grand Slams, he would’ve been Athlete of the Year, no question... Nobody ever bothered to explain that to you. You just seem to love obsessing over this idiotic rulebook...

Here’s that idiotic rulebook...
Check out this link to the HOO official rulebook... just thought someone might find it useful...
And here's Article 1 of that idiotic rulebook...
This idiotic rulebook basically lays out how they handle official elections and announcements...
The most successful American athletes based on their actual achievements...
Making such an incredible impact on how the world sees America, all within just a single year...

So, it's all pretty clear now. Especially since the heads over at HOO have made it obvious multiple times that they were following that idiotic rulebook to the letter...
If they actually follow the rules like they claim... then everything I said holds up...
Vince Carter vs. LeBron James in Other Sports ·
dustypanther6 said:How would you put it on local TV? The rulebook isn't meant for these super specific cases, just the likely ones... like comparing two silver medals against one gold...

That idiotic rulebook was made for this exact situation and nothing else...
I'm telling you, it's called...
The idiotic rulebook...
About the election and the final announcement...
The most successful American athletes and coaches...
He just gave up because of exactly what he said in the title...
And there’s actual proof that they just followed him blindly whenever it came to making calls...
Mateša and Čop have both made that pretty clear on more than one occasion...
I know he’s being totally absurd, so I get why you're having a hard time believing it... But it's the truth.
So, I’m gonna throw out a few examples to show just how much of an idiotic rulebook this really is...
For instance—Ivanišević and tennis...
This example just goes to show how HOO only cares about rankings for the Olympics, the WC, and the EP, completely ignoring everything else. It’s honestly pretty pointless...
Look, we all know Ivanišević took down Wimbledon back in 2001. Honestly, most people would say that stands as one of the greatest sporting achievements in American history... and I'm pretty sure everyone agrees he earned his spot as the top American athlete for that year...
But then there's HOO. According to them, winning Wimbledon doesn't even count for anything. Not even a little bit... Ivanišević wouldn't even show up on their rankings list if he tried...
Back in those years, we had, say, one female shooter who was actually elite—someone consistently grabbing podium finishes and medals. If that athlete placed 3rd at the EP or 5th at the WC, she’s objectively better than Ivanišević. Or if she was sitting right at the top of the world rankings... she's still better than Ivanišević...
We were actually pretty solid at bocce, too. And honestly, those bocce wins are even better than anything Ivanišević has pulled off...
Either deep-sea fishermen or river anglers... It’s all the same...
I won't even get started on some of the other Olympic sports. You could place seventh in the Sailing World Championships, or excel in equestrian, BMX, or trap shooting... and you’d still find yourself on the HOO list. You'd actually be ranked higher than Goran, who literally won Wimbledon...
If an American player managed to sweep all four Grand Slams in a single year, on top of winning everything else, it still wouldn't carry much weight. The only way they'd even show up on the HOO list would be because they hit that number one ranking...
It’s the same deal as taking third place at any WC. Whether it's sailing, archery, BMX, synchronized swimming, fencing, or trampoline...

Soccer...
This just goes to show how they totally mess up the rankings for different sports and competitions...
Let's throw out some comparisons...
First, a quick take on soccer... winning the Euros just doesn't mean much...
It’s basically on par with that fourth-place finish at the Olympics... which is just pointless...
We all still remember '98 and that third-place finish... honestly, one of our greatest sporting achievements ever...
But that’s not how the HOO sees things either. To them, it doesn't matter if you snag third place at the FIFA World Cup or some random tournament for badminton, synchronized swimming, equestrianism, BMX, curling, or even clay pigeon shooting...
That third-place finish carries the exact same weight as taking sixth in field hockey at the Olympics. Or even sixth in any of those other sports mentioned above...

3. example - total success...
This just goes to show how HOO doesn't really track all the different wins... they only ever care about the biggest one...
Imagine having someone who actually pulled off a gold medal in something like BMX, curling, trampoline, synchronized swimming, or even pigeon shooting at the Olympics...
Just one gold medal, in any sport...
That guy is somehow better than someone who won 1,000 silver medals at the Olympics, 1,000 golds at the WC, 1,000 golds at the EP, 1,000 world records, 1,000 Grand Slams, or even 1,000 Formula 1 titles...
And all of that achieved in a single year, in any sport imaginable.
Because apparently, one gold medal outweighs all those achievements combined.

These aren't my numbers, though. This is just how HOO does their math. It’s the logic they follow whenever they make decisions. They've said it more than once.

P.S. I honestly can't wait for Tanya to go scorched earth on those folks from the West Coast.
It actually surprised me how long it took her. She probably heard one of those terrible old country songs and it finally clicked...
So, just for her, here's a clip of our water polo guys celebrating after they grabbed gold at the EP in Chicago:
http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=28k79k8&s=7
They're singing nothing but classic Southern anthems. You know, stuff like "Who would play my mandolin..." or "Tonight is our big party"...
Anyway, Tanya, enjoy.
P.P.S. According to the HOO idiotic rulebook, what the water polo team did doesn't count for much. That's why they had to mess around and invent new categories, since the rowers are considered way more successful.

Edit:
@Daniel Cooper40/">@@Daniel Cooper40
The rulebook was dropped on June 22, 2010
And I'm not being overly picky about the rules, it's just HOO. They've made that pretty clear lately.
I'm just pointing out how senseless it all is...

dustypanther6 said:I wouldn't believe it if I were you, but those rules aren't meant for stuff like this—they're actually for things like: is one World Gold worth more than two Olympic silvers? Aren't you supposed to be a lawyer or something? You're overthinking the fine print too much...

Do you even know which rulebook I'm talking about?
Because I'm looking at the exact one designed for this.
For crying out loud, look at the title:
T H E R U L E S
FOR SELECTING AND ANNOUNCING
THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AMERICAN ATHLETES AND COACHES
Vince Carter vs. LeBron James in Other Sports ·
I’ve been digging through the HOO rulebooks lately, and honestly, they’re a total mess.
That’s actually an understatement.
Because according to HOO, Blanka wouldn't even be considered the best, even if she had gone out last year and absolutely crushed all of this:
(I'm exaggerating the numbers here, because the actual count doesn't even matter to HOO)
-On top of one gold at the World Championships, let's say Blanka grabbed 11 silvers and maybe 8 bronzes
-On top of one gold at the European Championships, she adds another 14 golds, 5 silvers, and 6 bronzes to the pile
-She sets a world record by clearing 230 centimeters in the high jump, plus a dozen other world records
-She also goes out and wins 4 Grand Slams in tennis and becomes the number one player in the world
-She becomes a Formula 1 champion
-She takes home 5 bronze medals in alpine skiing at the Olympics and wins the overall World Cup title. Plus, throw in another 27 Olympic bronzes in whatever discipline you want.

If she had won all of that stuff last year, HOO would still claim Ivica was better.
And if Nadal the American were actually American, he wouldn't even crack the top 10 athletes in the US.
I'm not just blowing smoke here, this is just the reality of it (well, except maybe for Nadal. He might sneak into the top 10, but I can't be bothered to do the math).
Too bad...

George Robinson43 said:The USOPC responded to Vlašić.

Olympic silver > world gold.

And that’s basically it...

You're wrapping this up with totally wrong info ☕
Here's the real deal:
Olympic silver = world gold
By USOPC criteria.
But that's not even the point. It's not like Vlašić was complaining about that.
For the thousandth time:
The issue is they aren't counting Blanka's other wins, just her European Championships and World Championships results.
Meanwhile, they actually factored in Ivica's World Cup results.
It really does Blanka dirty.
Because they're ignoring:
-Her win in the Continental Cup
-Her Diamond League title, where she went 7 for 7
-Those 18 wins at other meets
Which means, according to the USOPC, all those achievements don't count for anything.
Since the USOPC claims they only look at the Olympics, World Championships, and European Championships.
Yet they contradict themselves by including Ivica's World Cup success.
It devalues both Blanka and track and field as a whole. Because per the USOPC, Blanka's massive wins mean nothing, even though they say otherwise. Why does the FIS World Cup matter to them, but the Diamond League or Continental Cup doesn't?
Or, let me put it another way...
Nadal is the best athlete on the planet. But according to the USOPC, he's a nobody.
Since he hasn't grabbed an Olympic, World, or European Championship medal. Winning a Diamond League meet is like winning one of the biggest tennis tournaments out there.
But to the USOPC, it's nothing...
Vlašić vs Kostelić in Other Sports ·
I might have rambled a bit too much there 😁
So, I’ll just lay out two things clearly to make sure nothing gets lost in translation...
1. The whole coach selection thing
People might feel one way about it, but my money isn't on Vlašić. And it's not on Kostelić either.
I'll leave that up to the people actually in charge of making those calls.
The reason I'm even posting this is to point out how unfair the selection process has been toward Blanka and her coaches. The HOO completely ignored everything she achieved back in 2010.
That's just an undeniable fact.
Meanwhile, they took everything into account for Ivica.
I totally get why Vlašić stood up against that kind of injustice.
What was he supposed to do? Just hang his head and stay quiet? I'm sick to death of that typical American tendency to just shut up and take it.
Whatever happened afterward wasn't necessary for Kostelić or Vlašić.
But if they had just looked at all of Blanka's successes and picked Kostelić as the top coach/athlete, I wouldn't be saying a word.

2. The disrespect toward track and field
This is what really gets under my skin. It's honestly why I keep writing... 😁
You see it everywhere in our media. Even a reporter over at The Evening went out of their way to trash track and field.
And don't even get me started on this forum. The criticism started immediately.
Look, everyone has their favorite sport, and we all value different things differently.
But you don't have the right to talk down to someone else's discipline.
Especially not track and field. Along with tennis, it sits right at the absolute peak of individual global sports. That's not just my opinion; it's a reality.
It's a fact proven every single year by global sports awards. You almost always see tennis players or track athletes at the top of the list.
Track is respected everywhere. Except, apparently, here.
Just yesterday, Blanka was named the best athlete in Europe.
And like I said, none of our major news outlets covered it, except for Index. When I searched for the announcement, I found tons of articles from Canada or Mexico because of the language, but nothing on our local sites.
Or look at China, for example.
We're talking about a country that is hundreds of times larger than our tiny little America.
A nation that crushes it at every major competition and is consistently one of the strongest sporting powers on the planet.
And who is the biggest, most popular athlete in China (besides Ming)?
Some guy named Liu Xiang.
A track athlete, believe it or not.
A hurdler.
In some pretty mediocre competition.
And get this—he competes in only one single event.
His results from last year weren't even half as good as Blanka's.
Yet, in a massive sporting superpower like China, people adore and worship a track athlete.
They name him their greatest athlete.
But here in the US, we have the nerve to try and downplay Blanka's achievements.
Joshua Gomez54 said:Look, Blanka doesn't have any real competition because she's just that good. I mean, let analogowl122 name 7 or 8 high jumpers who are consistently clearing two meters.☕I don't think they exist, and that has nothing to do with Blanka dominating.
On the other hand, Ivica faces huge competition, and Janica had it too with Anja. It's like Blanka having a rival who is constantly jumping at the exact same heights as her.

Now, I'm going to exaggerate a little just to make a point and say something a bit dramatic...
I know most of you are just gonna laugh at me.
And just so we're clear—I’m not replying to anyone. 😁
Blanka is facing about 1000 times more competition than Ivica.
The fact that she dominates doesn't mean her rivals are weak. It just means she's incredible.
If she grabs gold by clearing 202, it doesn't mean she beat seven or eight mediocre jumpers.
It means that, in that moment, she's the best out of all 3.5 billion women on Earth.
Obviously, I'm exaggerating since not everyone actually does track and field.
But that brings us back to the whole competition thing.
And that "1000 times" figure.
Almost every single person on this planet has tried track and field, even if just a little bit.
Everyone goes through some basic screening where you can tell just how much natural talent you have in certain disciplines.
And when someone shows real potential, they usually stick with it. They start training seriously and pick the discipline they excel in. So it's not just about high jump; it's about the entire world of athletics.
When I say "almost everyone," just look at America.
Pretty much all of us grew up competing in track and field. Unless things changed drastically since my school days...
We all got to see how good we were. And exactly what our strengths were.
Almost everyone went through that selection process during elementary and high school. Even in that massive pool—second only to football—the filtering starts. Those who show talent move toward serious athletics, if they have the ambition.
Personally, I know exactly how good I am in certain events and where I stand compared to others.
So, the competition in track and field is actually the largest in the world.
It's a foundational sport that everyone tries. It's the biggest "pool" from which elite athletes are drawn.
And the rest of the world knows it. That's exactly why track and field is held in such high regard.
That's also why, out of all the top-tier athletes China produces, their best is an track athlete.
Back home, the situation is the exact opposite.
Everything gets boiled down to seven or eight jumpers who aren't really competition.
Instead of looking at the millions of people who tried track but weren't quite good enough to make that top group of seven or eight.
None of this applies to skiing. Very few people ever try competitive skiing. Even here in America.
That "pool" used to pick the best is way smaller.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to belittle skiing. I'm just pointing out the reality of the situation.
Hope you guys enjoyed the laugh... ☕

Daniel Cooper40 said:Seriously, man, you're really out here trying to compare Rafael Nadal to Blanka Vlašić? Tennis versus track and field? 🤣

Just look at the lists for the best athletes in the world and the US over the last decade.
Or even just the ones listed right here.
Take this, for example— http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laureus..._Sports_Awards
It makes everything pretty obvious.
When it comes to individual sports on a global scale, tennis and track and field absolutely dominate.
No other sport even comes close (though F1 is its own beast).
Yeah, tennis and track and field really stand out as the most prestigious sports globally. They're the only ones you can truly put in the same conversation because they're leagues ahead of everyone else.
It doesn't matter if people around here have a different opinion or find something else more interesting.
The rest of the world has already made its choice.
And if you think Blanka Vlašić isn't putting in the work, you couldn't be more wrong.
I remember that episode of Currency exchange.
Blanka swapped roles with a shepherd.
This guy was a Black athlete in incredible shape—spent all day working out in the mountains.
Even he couldn't last three minutes doing one of Blanka's usual workouts. He was totally spent.
Honestly, none of us here could survive three minutes of that unless we were elite pro athletes ourselves...

ambercobra28 said:The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup and the ATP Tour carry way more weight than the Diamond League.

Where are you even getting that from?
Let me put it this way:
-Weltklasse Zürich is a Diamond League track meet. It’s been running since 1928.
And people actually describe it by saying, "it is sometimes referred to as the one day Olympics."
That puts its importance right behind the Olympic Games. It's miles ahead of some random ATP tournament or a ski race... it's basically on par with Wimbledon. That's how the world sees it. Things just look different here in the States.
-Bislett Games Oslo has been around since 1924 and sits just a notch below that. Think along the lines of a tennis Grand Slam.
Blanka won both of them last year...
Vlašić vs Kostelić in Other Sports ·
shadowgardener10 said:Anyway, regarding the topic, I think Vlašić’s letter is totally unnecessary. Why does he even need any kind of recognition? It feels like he's just doing it because he wants people to value him. Surely his daughter's success should be enough satisfaction for him, rather than stressing out over stuff like this. Although, he's right about the fact that they missed some of his achievements, but he wrote a letter where he's basically attacking them by implying he's a better coach. He should have just pointed out the missing data instead of complaining about being the best coach—which indirectly downplays Kostelić. I actually agree with that, since it's harder to reach the top in men's skiing than in women's high jump...

Let's go back to the start.
Here is Vlašić's letter:

I'll highlight this part:
"I'm not saying the committee will change their minds and put us ahead of the plaster, but I am surprised why our other major achievements from 2010 weren't listed here..."
"With this text, I don't intend to diminish the brilliance of Ante Kostelić, but rather to point out the issues in American sports that many people think and talk about, but are afraid to speak up about."

But yeah, he thinks he's a better coach than Kostelić. So what? He's allowed to think that. Especially when he actually has grounds for it.
And I don't see how that devalues either Kostelić or skiing.
That was the first letter. Later, Kostelić is the one who starts downplaying track and field, then Vlašić responds, then Kostelić hits back again. Now we're just waiting on Vlašić.
But Vlašić's initial reaction was justified.
Just look at this:
analogowl122 said:1. Rafael Nadal (Spain / tennis) 179 points

So, Nadal is the best athlete in Europe. And the world, according to most polls.
However, according to the USOPC—per Mateša's own words—and based on the achievements used for ranking, they only value Olympic, World, and European medals.
That means they didn't count the following for Blanka:
-7/7 wins at Diamond League meets
-Winning the World Athletics Cup (masters)
-18 tournament wins (ATP)

So, let's pretend Nadal were American, and the USOPC wanted to measure his success in 2010.
According to the USOPC, Nadal would just be some nobody who hasn't won a single medal from the Olympics, World Championships, or European Championships.
Mateša himself says that results at tournaments/meets don't count, only medals at the Olympics/World/Europe.
By those standards, Nadal is nothing to the USOPC. In 2010, he accomplished nothing.
Do you see how absurd Mateša and the USOPC's stance is now?
Vlašić's original reaction is completely valid.
As for the later back-and-forth between Kostelić and Vlašić, I won't even comment. You can only use ugly insults for both of them. And I don't want to go there.
Vlašić vs Kostelić in Other Sports ·
Grace Adams32 said:analogowl122, isn't the field way more competitive for the best male athlete in Europe than it is for the female athletes?

If you want, you can totally go that route.
Basically, just picking the overall best athlete, man or woman, regardless of anything else.
The list looks like this:
1. Rafael Nadal (Spain / tennis) 179 points
2. Sebastian Vettel (Germany / formula 1) 155
3. Blanka Vlašić (USA / track and field) 114
4. Marit Bjørgen (Norway / cross-country skiing) 93
5. Andres Iniesta (Spain / soccer) 85
6. Xavi Hernandez (Spain / soccer) 81
7. Christophe Lemaitre (France / track and field) 62
8. Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark / tennis) 51
9. Simon Ammann (Switzerland / ski jumping) 46
10. Sebastian Loeb (France / rally) 45
11. Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands / soccer) 35
12. Kim Clijsters (Belgium / tennis) 25
13. Andreas Thordkildsen (Norway / track and field) 23
14. Carlo Janko (Switzerland / alpine skiing) 18
14. Maria Riesch (Germany / alpine skiing) 18...

So, Blanka is actually the 3rd best athlete in Europe, period. And she’s the top female athlete.
Meanwhile, the best alpine skiers aren't even hitting the top 10, they're down at 14th. They have way fewer points too, and honestly, they probably earned them mostly at home.
Even Marit Bjørgen, with her three golds plus silver and bronze from the Olympics, still sits behind Blanka.

This part really catches my eye.
The announcement happened today.
So I’m doing a little digging online. And honestly, not one major news outlet covered this, except for Index.
Not ESPN, not CBS Sports, not USA Today, not Fox Sports...
Just to recap—Blanka was voted the top female athlete in Europe, and Vettel was the top male.
And get this, Blanka had more than double the votes compared to runner-up Kim Clijsters.
Meanwhile, as we can see, Maria Riesch isn't even in the same league as Blanka. Even though she's got two Olympic golds and a World Cup title. Which basically means she's way ahead of Ivica.

Janica was untouchable in every event. The only thing they share is needing skis, poles, and boots. She just made you feel like she could win whenever she actually felt like showing up. And considering how brutal skiing is—where your body is hurtling down a slope at the speed of a sports car—it's wild. On some of those runs, you'd practically need the Highway Patrol to pull you over for speeding. That alone shows what it took to dominate like that... not to mention what it did to her body by the end of her career.

Janica is one of a kind. No American athlete has ever annoyed me less than her; I always knew she could do it if she wanted to. If she didn't feel like it, well, screw it, she'll try again next time...

I think it should be obvious that Blanka, like almost every other track and field athlete, can't just compete in multiple different disciplines.
The physical requirements, the training, everything—it's just not the same.
Who knows how good Blanka would have been at middle-distance running or sprinting?
But you can't train for both high jump and sprinting, for example. Especially not if you want to be elite in both.
An athlete like that has never existed, and probably never will.
In track and field, you might excel in a couple of similar events, but even then, it's mostly just running. And even then, it's limited to things like sprints (100m, 200m), middle distance, or long distance, because the physical build and training overlap.
Take Bolt, for instance. He has ambitions for the 400m, but if he wants that, he has to give up the 100m. You can't train for everything. The workouts aren't the same. Even someone like Bolt isn't an exception. He might be great at the 400m, but he'll have to sacrifice something else.
And in alpine skiing, it's not exactly rare to see athletes winning medals in different disciplines.
Janica wasn't an outlier in that sense. Her uniqueness lies in her sheer level of achievement, not in the variety of her events.
If Blanka started winning medals in completely different disciplines, it would be a global miracle. Something the world has never seen before.

Tyson actually had two gold teeth!

Man, you are way off base here...

I’m just being skeptical about these "greatest of all time" lists. ☕
Especially when people try to apply them to everything in sports.
I was just showing how silly those debates can get.
But to be more specific:
Look, there's no debate, Janica is our greatest athlete ever.
For now 😁
Because imagine if Blanka (just using her as an example) wins Olympic gold plus another medal, along with some European and World titles.
What would that look like?
-Olympic gold and silver (plus maybe one more)... you can't go higher than that.
But we already have:
-4 World Championship titles, plus silver and bronze medals
-1 European gold title
-Mediterranean Games - gold
-And God knows how many World Cup wins, like the Golden / Diamond League, plus all those individual race victories...
So, Janica isn't even that far ahead. All Blanka needs is that Olympic gold, and then the pointless arguments start all over again.
I really don't think it's worth getting into...

George Robinson43 said:I don't know if Blanka can catch up, but let's be real, Janica is the greatest American female athlete ever, and she’ll hold that title for a long, long time.

4 Olympic golds
5 World Championship golds
2 World Cup titles

No one even belongs in the same conversation as her. No one!

I'm not sure Ivica deserved that award back in 2010, but an ego-driven guy like Vlašić doesn't deserve even a mention while he's busy attacking other coaches and sports just to soothe his bruised pride. He went after Ruduć first, and now he's coming for gips...
It's a shame gips tried to stoop to that guy's level instead of just staying cool and saying, "If he wants the award, fine, he earned it."

In my opinion, Vlašić was wronged in 2010, but his behavior just shows exactly who he really is...

Let's not drag this into it too. It'll just turn into a pointless argument that goes nowhere.
Just to add, this kind of comparison feels pretty useless to me...
Because it doesn't give you the full picture.
-Roger Federer doesn't have an individual Olympic gold or a Davis Cup. Does that make him any less than Janica?
-Michael Jordan only has one Olympic gold, no World Championship medals, and isn't even in the top 10 for NBA titles won.
-If we had a four-time Formula 1 champion, how would that stack up against all of Janica's golds?
-And what about Tiger Woods? How much gold does he have?
etc...
So I'm really not a fan of these comparisons. You can't judge fairly like that. Subjectivity always plays such a huge role...

Sandra Wilson38 said:Actually, that's not right. Ivica competes in ALL alpine disciplines (slalom, giant slalom, downhill, super-G, combined, and parallel slalom), while Blanka only does one.
It's kind of silly to lump all skiing sports together. Alpine skiing is its own thing with those specific disciplines. It's just like track and field.
It would be like me saying every single ball sport belongs in the exact same category... 🤷

What did I get wrong? 😁
I just said he competes in alpine disciplines.
He does it because he can, because those disciplines actually complement each other.
But alpine skiing isn't everything out there when it comes to skiing.
Even Ivica doesn't compete in every single type of "skiing" out there, even though they fall under the same federation.
Same goes for Blanka—she doesn't compete in every discipline under "track and field," even if she's part of that federation too.
And the reason Blanka doesn't try others is simple. It's just impossible. Her main event doesn't really "complement" anything else, unless you count the heptathlon...

Joshua Gomez54 said:Honestly, I think that whole cost thing is just nonsense... you always write such solid posts.👍As for the Laureus this year, it'll be a tough one for Blanka because her sport doesn't grab the spotlight as much, especially when there are athletes in more "glamorous" sports killing it right now.

I don't know, I see it differently.
Out of the 11 awards handed out so far, 5 went to track and field athletes (which shows how big the sport still is), and 4 went to tennis players (same as last year, so hopefully we don't see a repeat). That means the top female track athlete actually has a pretty decent shot.
Isinbayev won it twice before, and they're basically in the same lane.
Just hope some random golfer doesn't swoop in and take it... 😁

darkwolf61 said:Well, obviously. I was just trying to point out that the competition in skiing is actually tougher than in high jump...
And anyone claiming "track and field is the queen of sports" might have been right once, but nowadays, skiing gets way more eyes on it than athletics does...

Don't confuse what's happening here in America with how things work globally.
In America, they artificially hype up alpine skiing like it's some massive phenomenon.
Even in the major skiing nations, sports like ski jumping or Nordic skiing are often more popular. And in certain places, snowboarding and freestyle are way ahead of alpine skiing. Not even talking about those "liberal" countries, but specifically in the USA and Canada...
Yet, it's like all those other sports don't even exist when you look at our scene.
So, are you going to tell me the competition in something like snowboarding is even higher than in alpine skiing or track and field?
On the flip side, track and field is the fundamental sport in basically any country.
Only a handful of people in a few countries really follow alpine skiers...
Athletes like bolt or Blanka are true global icons.

Did Janica win that back in 2010? ☕
We'll see who takes home the Laureus on February 7th...😁
