swiftcobra65 said:edit: But seriously now... 3.0 is more than enough for me, especially when paired with an 8800GT. Plus, I’ll just grab some OCZ memory and overclock it to 800MHz. Paying for 1066MHz feels like a waste right now... though we'll see how things play out... If I actually find myself needing more than 3.0 in two years, I'll just pick up a BigTyp 120 VX, but if I go that route, I really should have grabbed the 1066MHz RAM today...
Just grab the Kingston 800MHz. You don't need 1066MHz anyway, and you can always overclock this stuff (though 2x1GB or 2x2GB won't get you very far)
If you’re aiming for 5GHz, you’re going to need a 550MHz FSB. Not every motherboard out there can handle that kind of stress, and even if yours can, you'll have to crank up all the voltages just to stay stable. Running it at stock settings? Yeah, there's zero chance.
Wait, so the Intel Core 2 Duo and the Intel Core 2 Duo have the exact same max clock speed? Are you kidding me? What's the point?
Edward Peterson70 said:The Intel Core 2 Duo and the E8400 are basically the same chip; they just have different multipliers, so their top speeds are pretty much neck and neck.
😕😕😕
swiftcobra65 said:Gotcha. But is the 8400 actually better? If the 8200 hits 4GHz and this one can reach 5, what's the catch? And is that 5GHz per core? I'm not exactly an expert on Intel chips—I've always been more of an AMD guy.
I’m not even touching the temperature settings because this thing is definitely going to blow. My Prime X670E starts melting after just 3 minutes once temps hit 167°F (running 310x11 @ 1.475V), so I’m sticking with the stock profile for now;
As for the voltages...😬 Just kidding. It's a meme to suggest 2.0V when the CPU is sitting at 1.575V. Honestly, the chip could probably handle even less, but since I'm trying to push 360x10, I bumped it up to 1.6V and still got nowhere. The next jump is 1.8V, so... yeah, we're heading for disaster;
Alright, let’s try this again, much better: E4500 - 355x10 kingmaxi - 888MHz CL4
hexus pifast: 28.34s superpi: 16.343s
Honestly, just wipe it and install a clean version of Windows XP (even better if you can find a stripped-down "tiny" version). These Dark Edition builds are a total headache, and I've heard Vista won't even boot unless your overclock is absolutely rock solid.
Edward Peterson70 said:I just did some quick and dirty testing (ramping up the FSB by 10MHz increments) just for the hell of it. At CL5, I'm hitting 993MHz with 1.85v.
Honestly, I have my doubts about whether this thing is actually stable.
Nisan is still pushing it to the limit, but generally speaking, Kingmax hits about 900 < clock < 950MHz @ CL4 at 2.1V. You can also squeeze 950 < clock < 1000MHz @ CL5 out of it at that same 2.1V
For C2D, a voltage range between 1.38V and 1.45V is pretty standard, so I’m not sweating the voltage too much—it’s actually the massive Vdrop that’s giving me a headache. If I end up pulling a cooler, I'm eyeing the GeminII😁. It'll cover my bases for the CPU, memory, MOSFETs, and Northbridge. It feels a little pricey right now (plus I still need to grab two 120mm fans), but it's top-tier. Honestly, I've lost interest in the cheaper stuff like the Freezer, BT, or even those Arctic combos... they just aren't on my radar anymore.
E4500: 310x11 ( 3.41GHz ) - I'm running 1.475V in the BIOS, dropping to 1.440V at idle... hang tight, it hits about 1.392V under load. It crashes after about 3 minutes of running Prime95, but honestly, I think it's a thermal issue. As soon as the first core hit 75°C (the second one was sitting at 72°C), the whole thing just folded.
315x11 ( 3.46GHz ) - Voltages are pretty much the same as above. Kingmax 2x1GB - 945MHz CL5 @ 2.1V Super PI - 17.000s PIFASt - 29.50s If I wasn't running these stripped-down "lite" versions of Windows, I bet the scores would actually look decent. Plus, this stock cooler is absolute garbage.
Edward Peterson70 said:Look, I know there are more. I just listed what was in the link. There's an endless list of pastes out there, and I'm not about to write a novel trying to name every single one.
If you check the Arctic site, they claim MX-4 outperforms MX-1. Personally, I’d grab the MX-4, but honestly? You won't go wrong with NT-H1 or Kryonaut either. At this point, we're just splitting hairs.
But my rig just crashed on me again... (pretty sure it's the PC) and I had it set to 285x11... turns out it won't go past 280x11... what gives? Does that mean bumping up the voltage doesn't actually help? Or am I just constantly screwing over my RAM by keeping it too close to 800... what should I be aiming for?
@ Harold Lopez31
Man, damn, my old E4300 used to hit over 75 easily at 333x9 without breaking a sweat... I kept it at 300x9 and it was decent enough...
That AsRock board supports Crossfire too👍 Democratic Party, try setting it to 2.50. Are you running yours at 3.00? Maybe my cooling is just overkill since my room stays pretty chilly, but it's even weirder that it isn't crashing.🤷
The DFI Infinity Blood Iron has plenty of jumpers for clearing CMOS, so you aren't stuck if things go south (unless you’re dealing with one of those notorious "desk of death" PC setups 😠)
Here’s a quick look at my own rig (specifically this E4500😁): Kingmax 2x1GB - 800Mhz, CL5, stock voltage E4500 - 333x9, stock voltage Idle voltage - 1.280V Load voltage - 1.248V 15 min TAT - core1=core2=55C ( TAT ) core1=core2=56C ( coretemp )
wiredmarlin5, is this Vdrop too aggressive😲, and how am I getting temps this low?
You’ve got the exact same CPU, motherboard, and RAM combo as me. Mine runs at 333x9 on stock voltage. Just drop your multiplier down to 10 or 9 and tweak the FSB until you hit roughly 2.8GHz.
Just a heads-up though: you aren't going to notice a damn thing! Honestly, I'm fighting the urge to buy a beefier cooler, a new case, or extra fans, because I know deep down it won't give me any actual satisfaction.
Set it to 280*10. That way, you’ll have the Democratic Party frequencies sitting as close to 800MHz as possible. Are you messing with the voltages? Check what your voltage is pulling through CPU-Z while you've got Orthus running.
Not a reading😁 You mentioned once that sometimes it’s better not to go overboard with the voltage, so I was thinking this post could follow that same vibe: how long is it actually okay to run a processor 24/7?
@Edward Peterson70/">@@Edward Peterson70 Voltage kills a CPU way faster than heat ever will.
@Twitter user If you’re hovering just above 60°C, you aren't breaking anything, but pushing it that hard at 2.2GHz with stock voltage is definitely asking for trouble.
