John Doe wants to sue the forum admins and call the cops in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I mean, out of five moderators, you’re basically the only one showing up, rowdyhawk10.

The moderation on this forum is an absolute disaster, and honestly, you're just making things worse lately.
If you don't get why we label certain stuff as illegal or abusive, maybe try actually studying the law—or even just the arguments we're throwing out here. It seems pretty obvious at this point that you're the only one who thinks, say, Kevin Mitchell's post was an insult, while your own ban stays active. You're one of those incredibly rare people who doesn't see a controversial post as offensive, threatening, or illegal, yet you're the one handing out bans to anyone who points that out.

I sent a PM to Desiree, so let's see how that plays out. Personally, I think you're completely out of your depth when it comes to handling this or any similar issue; we'll just have to see how the admins rule on it.

And yeah, I'm still keeping the police as an option. Even someone who's been banned can report illegal activity—I hope you're aware of that.

So, my post got nuked here, yet the threat itself is still just sitting there without any action taken.

Listen, mods—you’ve got until tomorrow. I’m emailing the police first thing Monday morning.

Nothing personal. 🙂

Alexander Kern3 said:Look, regarding those kinds of statements—like the one John Doe dropped—I’ll keep this brief: I know someone who posted something almost identical online recently, basically taking a shot at a specific person to criticize what they were doing. Two days later? She was dealing with the cops. A criminal charge for making threats against that individual. And honestly, the fact that the author tried to play it cool by using conditional language didn't really change much in the eyes of the law.

Saying stuff like "I'm gonna corner you" or "I'm gonna break your back" isn't exactly how you communicate if you want to stay within the bounds of US law. It’s pretty obvious that kind of talk is punishable. Maybe the mods and admins ought to start keeping that in mind.

So, let's put it this way: either sanction the reported post the way it deserves, or I am personally going to file a report with the police regarding criminal threats made on this forum, and then you guys can try explaining yourselves to the cops, the admins, and Andrew himself.

Since I apparently have to use a sledgehammer to make people respect the law, so be it.

Your move, dear moderators.

and man... I’m gonna break your back and then just smile at you...
seriously
I'll beat you up, laugh in your face, and please, please don't go suing me or calling the cops, because, you know... I was just laughing while doing it, and it wasn't even personal—it's not like I was targeting you specifically, I was just out there beating people up on the street, totally random

John Doe, he just said he'd break your back.

Nothing personal.

Totally professional.

I'm sure that's incredibly comforting to hear.
When you're sitting in a wheelchair with a broken spine, you'll probably think, "Man, things could have been worse. At least some amateur didn't do this to me."

Not to mention, this post is basically calling for the overthrow of the U.S. constitutional order and threatening anyone who stands in the way. I mean, John Doe explicitly states he'll use force to resist legislation that clashes with his religious beliefs. You know, secular laws in a secular country.

But apparently, in the eyes of our moderators, there's no threat here—nothing dangerous at all.
On the other hand, Kevin Mitchell tells the guy he feels sorry for him, and suddenly that's treated like a massive, dangerous insult.

I honestly don't know what the hell is going on with this forum... Back when I used to moderate this place ages ago, the biggest headache was just Luke & Co. Inc. There weren't any death threats. No threats of breaking spines either. And back then, my only move was deleting inappropriate posts; there wasn't even an option for a moderator to issue a ban or even a warning. Now we've got five moderators, and it's still a total mess. 👎

rowdyhawk10 said:briskorca19, we don't really operate that way, rather, we act based on your report. I rarely have the chance to read through a thread post by post.

So, in every post, on the left side below the avatar, there are several icons, including one like this: . You need to click that icon to report the post, and in the window that opens, you should probably quote the controversial part of the message. When a post is quite long, simply typing "threat" or "insult" might not even be sufficient—you really ought to specify what the insult or threat actually was, because I try to avoid making unargued reports on lengthy posts. The question is: did you report the post using that method?

As for this specific post, it was relatively brief. In my estimation, John Doe isn't making any threats toward you or any other user here (he even added "nothing personal!" and a smiley at the end 🙂). I suppose I'm wondering what kind of ban you think he deserved? What would our justification for the ban look like? If you were thinking of something like: "threatening users" ... then, in my opinion, that wouldn't be justified. Best regards

And what if I just said: "I'm gonna kill you. Nothing personal. 🙂"?

I guess that wouldn't count as a threat either, right?
How do I become a moderator? in Forum Help! ·
Becoming part of the moderator cabal is getting pretty damn difficult—after you've jumped through all these hoops, passed the tests, taken the oaths, and made the vows. I guess you have to master some sort of dark mysticism, sacrifice a virgin at a nine-way crossroads under a full moon, successfully broker at least one peace treaty, and—maybe most importantly—kiss the admin's ass. ☕

They're still way too close together; those outer ones are just firing off for no reason. We can't afford that kind of waste, especially not with the economy being this shaky right now.
Maybe try using multiple indents next time.

So, if these people want to go around trying to punish someone for something they wrote—when the law doesn't even forbid it—then they're basically the ones breaking the law themselves... I mean, think about it.

No, they wouldn't. ☕

If you wander into the Social Science section intending to debate linguistics, yet you can't decide whether to spell a word correctly or incorrectly, or if it's an option or an objection—well, that lack of basic knowledge renders you incompetent for any serious discussion. It’s akin to someone attempting to lecture on mathematics without being able to solve a simple equation, or discussing medicine while insisting the human body consists of 237 bones.

And frankly, I will always call out such individuals, regardless of how you feel about it, the moment I spot them. It’s the sheer audacity of those who refuse to master the basics yet insist on acting like experts. Trying to compete with true scholars—that is the primary issue.

Secondly, this forum is a medium of the written word. In this space, your grammar serves as your personal ID card. It speaks volumes about your education and your level of culture. Therefore, it wouldn't hurt to be a bit more careful here and there. Because as much as being corrected might irritate you (not that I do it often myself!), it raises the blood pressure of others just as much when people stumble over basic spelling or punctuation rules and nuances (or whatever else), making themselves look ridiculous. Moreover, it shows a lack of respect for others. I have realized this countless times, and if you actually took a moment to reflect, you would see the truth in it. Communication is a two-way street; if you expect concessions from others, you must be willing to make them yourself. Let's flip the script: why should anyone here have to struggle through your sloppy, half-baked ramblings? Is it really too much to ask to think for a second or two before hitting a key? Are we on the same page, or what? 😉

Finally, it is telling that those who grumble most loudly against proper writing are exclusively the uneducated. For the learned—or at least those who actually bother to learn something on this forum—it is never an issue. On the contrary, they are grateful for every lesson.

I'd just add that I only bother playing editor when someone starts acting all high and mighty about their education or their grasp of the language, despite it being painfully obvious from their text that they don't know jack.
That means, by the way, I've had to correct plenty of self-proclaimed "experts" who, in their own attempts to fix things, usually end up making a massive mess of their own corrections.

Specifically, when we're discussing language, I expect at least some baseline literacy; otherwise, there's nothing to talk about. Same goes for other stuff—I can't have a serious discussion about biology, chemistry, or math with an ID-ovcc.

Well, thanks a whole lot for not being a moderator then. ☕
