Corsair Hydro Series on LGA 1700 in Hardware ·
So, like the title says, I’m wondering if it's actually possible to mount this Corsair Hydro Series cooler onto an LGA 1700 socket. This Intel Stock Cooler I'm using right now feels pretty underwhelming, so I’d much rather just put this thing I already own to good use.

http://www.pcekspert.com/clanak/cool...nh-d14-rodaci/

It’s an older model, sure, but the cooling performance is solid and everything works fine. I really want to keep using it if there's a way. Back when this originally came out, the LGA 1700 socket didn't even exist, so I have no clue if the Intel mounting kit meant for LGA 1155 that came with the cooler will work here.

View on imgur

If that won't work, would a Cooler Master mounting kit for LGA 1200 be compatible with this Corsair unit? They look almost identical to Cooler Master coolers—honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Corsair was some sort of sub-brand for them or something. I suspect the mounting kits I got with it for LGA 1155 and other sockets are basically the same ones Cooler Master was using back then.

Or maybe I should just stop messing around and buy something new entirely. I'll probably end up going with a Core i5-12400 which only has a 65W TDP, so I don't even strictly need something heavy-duty. Still, it feels like a waste to toss a perfectly good cooler just because of a mounting issue.

A USB hub is basically just an extension for your USB ports. If your laptop is running low on connections, this is how you beef them up.
Something like this

It’s not a dealbreaker for a monitor. You can always just buy one separately later, and they aren't exactly breaking the bank.

If you aren't gaming, it honestly doesn't matter much either way. You could even find a cheaper option. Just make sure you get an IPS panel and check that it has a DisplayPort and an HDMI input, or whatever you're planning to use to hook it up to your laptop.

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at this one instead.

It hits 75 Hz (compared to your 60 Hz), has a slightly better response time at 4ms versus 8ms (though manufacturers love to fudge those numbers, so who knows if it's actually true), and supports G-Sync, which helps if you're running an AMD card (though I think you can probably coax Nvidia cards into working with it too). The downside is it lacks a built-in USB hub, whereas yours has one.
Depends on what you need it for. If you're gaming, I'd go with the higher refresh rate.

Look, Nvidia really messed up this new lineup. Intel isn't actually that bad, either. But right now, they've only released the top-tier cards.
The idea is that they're aiming for something comparable to an RTX 3060 instead of a 2080. In terms of raw power, they should be roughly equal. And ideally, it should pull less than 200W. I guess. Or maybe just wait and see what Intel puts out for the mid-range once it finally drops.

An RTX 2080 pulls about 225W, while the RTX 2080 Super hits 250W.
Your PSU is probably fine, but if it's an older unit, you might be cutting it a bit close.

Lawrence Phillips said:I think I'll just hold out for the next generation of mid-range cards next year. Better performance, lower power draw.

Yeah, that's the smartest move. The 2080 isn't exactly a powerhouse anymore, and even the Super was only a minor step up. Honestly, I'd avoid the high-end segment unless you absolutely have to. You end up dealing with massive power draw and needing beefier PSUs, not to mention they're huge. It's always better to wait for the newer generation; you get more actual strength from better architecture rather than just shoving more electricity down its throat.

I honestly don't think you need more than 12GB for that resolution.

If there's extra VRAM available, the game might load more assets, but that doesn't mean it actually needs them. I highly doubt you'd see any noticeable difference in Frames Per Second between 12GB and 16GB at that resolution.

If you want to avoid buying overpriced bullshit, you should probably just wait for both Nvidia and Intel to drop their mid-range cards. Maybe then prices will actually start making sense. But hey, nothing is guaranteed.

Actually, you might want to aim a bit higher than what you listed. An RTX 3060 Ti or an RTX 3070 would pretty much be the ceiling for that processor if you want any sense of balance. Even then, you’re looking at maybe a 5% bottleneck, which most people consider negligible.
There are some calculators out there if you want to mess around with the numbers.

https://pc-builds.com/bottleneck-calculator/
https://www.cpuagent.com/fps-bottleneck-calculator

But look here, just because a CPU can bottleneck a GPU doesn't mean your graphics card will constantly sit there underutilized. That only happens when one of those CPU cores hits 100% usage. How often that actually occurs depends entirely on the game. Some are optimized to spread the load across multiple cores, others aren't. It's hard to give a definitive answer, but usually, when a bottleneck does hit, it's just a momentary stutter or a quick dip in Frames Per Second. Your average performance won't stay low unless the CPU is genuinely ancient.
Basically, those cards are your upper limit. If you're eyeing something more powerful, it'd be smarter to upgrade the CPU too.

People usually point to Intel as the gold standard. Something like this, for example.

They’re pretty pricey, though.
Personally, I don't think you need anything better than this.

Take a look at what's available; there are tons of options out there. Just make sure you stick to the 120x120x25mm dimensions since that's what your case supports. Note that "Pulse Width Modulation" means it has built-in power management, allowing the fan to adjust its speed as needed. The ones without that feature just run at full blast all the time. You'll also see different versions with 3-pin and 4-pin connectors. Check your motherboard first to ensure you have enough headers with the right number of pins. Those Pulse Width Modulation fans specifically need a 4-pin connection if you want to control the speed.

If you're looking for something absolutely beastly, you could try this. 😁
