  • XFX HD4830 512 - $290 @ Best Buy - Honestly, this card is such a fantastic little value if you're looking for something mid-range without breaking the bank...
  • Logitech MX518 - $85 @ Walmart - Total old-school classic, but man, does it still perform beautifully
Thomas Hernandez21 said:It’s getting incredibly late over here and my eyes are starting to go all blurry on me, so I honestly don't think I can manage to power through and read every single one of these posts tonight... if someone could just drop a quick line from your keyboard to keep things moving, that would be wonderful...

I'm on the hunt for a decent PCI-e graphics card that can actually handle running GTA 4 without breaking a sweat, and my budget is... well, I'm still figuring that part out! $233 I was just sitting here thinking, maybe I should pick up a few more... perhaps an HD3870 or two if the deal is right? It’s hard to say exactly what I need yet, but my mind keeps drifting back to that card...

Thanks so much...

  • The 9600 GSO... now that really takes me back to a simpler time in hardware, doesn't it? I was just sitting here thinking about how much things have shifted since we were all tinkering with those specific cards, and man, it feels like a lifetime ago... such a classic little piece of gear!
  • I was just sitting here thinking about that old 9600 GSO with the 768MB of VRAM... it really takes me back to those days when you felt like you actually owned a piece of high-end hardware just by having a decent amount of memory under the hood... it's funny how much things change, isn't it? Back then, everything felt so much more tangible, almost like you could feel the power of the card just by looking at the specs on the box... anyway, I was just reminiscing about that specific era of gaming...
  • I was just sitting here thinking about that old Palit 9600GT, and man, it really takes me back to those days when you felt like you were actually making progress with your rig... it’s funny how much we used to obsess over these specific cards, isn't it? I remember staring at the specs and wondering if it would be enough to finally push my favorite games without everything turning into a slideshow... such a different era of computing, truly...
  • Now, I was just sitting here thinking about that old 9800 GT with the 512MB of VRAM... you know, those cards really had a certain magic to them back in the day, didn't they? It feels like just yesterday we were all obsessing over every single frame rate jump, and there was something so incredibly satisfying about seeing a game finally run smoothly on a setup you worked so hard to put together... though sometimes I wonder if we even realized how much fun we were having in that moment... anyway, just a little nostalgic thought crossing my mind today!
  • I was just sitting here thinking about that Palit 9800 GT... you know, it’s one of those cards that really makes you stop and wonder how much we actually value raw performance versus just having something reliable under the hood, though I suppose at this stage, most of us are just looking for that perfect sweet spot in a build... it's such an interesting little piece of hardware to reflect on, especially when you consider how much the landscape has shifted since we first started tinkering with these components back in the day... anyway, I couldn't help but let my mind wander toward it!
  • I was just sitting here thinking about the old HD4670... you know, looking back at how much things have changed since those days when we thought we had everything figured out, and it really makes you wonder where the time went, doesn't it? It’s funny how a single piece of hardware can trigger such a massive wave of nostalgia, especially when you start remembering all the different builds and the sheer excitement of unboxing something new... anyway, I was just reflecting on that specific card for a moment...
  • I was just sitting here thinking about that Palit HD3870 we were discussing earlier... you know, the one that's been on my mind quite a bit lately... and I can't help but wonder if anyone else has had a chance to really get under the hood of it yet! It’s such an interesting little piece of hardware, isn't it? I mean, when you consider how much power you can squeeze out of these cards if you find just the right balance... it makes you wonder where the industry is even heading next... anyway, I'm just rambling now, but I'd love to hear what everyone thinks about its performance compared to those other models we looked at...
  • I’ve been spending quite a bit of my recent free time tinkering around with the Sapphire HD4830, and I must say, there is something truly delightful about seeing how much life a little bit of modern hardware can breathe into an older setup... It really makes you wonder where the years have gone, doesn't it? I was sitting here just thinking about the sheer evolution of things, and honestly, this card feels like such a charming little bridge between eras... even if it isn't exactly a powerhouse by today's standards, there's a certain magic in its performance that keeps me smiling...

If we’re talking about raw power, I'd say it would look something like this...

So, I’ve been spending quite a bit of my afternoon just staring at the specs for this HD4670, and honestly, it really does make you wonder where the industry is heading... it feels like one of those moments where everything is poised on the edge of something much bigger, though I suppose that's just how it feels when you're deep in the weeds of hardware enthusiasts' forums, isn't it? It's a curious little card, truly... it sits right there in that sweet spot of being capable without being absolutely absurd in terms of power draw, which is something we all appreciate more than we care to admit when looking at our utility bills... anyway, I was just thinking about how much things have shifted since the days of the older architectures, and it really puts this specific piece of silicon into perspective... turns out, it's a pretty interesting little player in the grand scheme of things!
It’s funny how you start looking at these numbers and realize that a 9600GSO with 384MB really just ends up being right in that same ballpark as a standard 9600GT or even an HD3870... it's all a bit of a blur when you dive down the rabbit hole of performance tiers, isn't it?
I was just sitting here thinking about that old 9600 GSO with the 768MB of VRAM... it really does take me back to a different era of computing, doesn't it? It’s funny how much we used to obsess over those specific memory increments, almost like they were life-changing milestones back then... though looking back now, it feels like a lifetime ago...
Well, if you really look at how these things stack up, it feels like an 8800 GT is essentially sitting right alongside the 9800 GT... though honestly, if you want that extra little bit of extra kick, you might just find yourself leaning toward the Sapphire HD4830 instead...

The thing is, the 9800 GT is basically the exact same card as the 8800 GT 512... I mean, literally identical... so if you just grab an 8800 GTS (which is really the same thing as the 9800 GTX) for $333, you are going to be absolutely thrilled with how it performs... 🙂
I was thinking about picking up an 8800 GTS 512 from HGspot, assuming they even have any left in stock... if not, I might just pivot toward a Sapphire HD4830, maybe two of them, or perhaps just grab an 8800 GT 512 instead.

The bottleneck is definitely sitting right there on the Central Processing Unit. I don't follow the Pentium 4 specs all that closely, but even with an Intel Core 2 Duo e8000 series, you might actually be able to push that Front Side Bus quite a bit higher...

I mean, seriously, with this old junker 680i SLI setup I've got, I'm hitting 380MHz, yet when I was running on an Intel P35 chipset, I was cruising along at 525MHz+ without breaking a sweat at all!

It really isn't worth the effort to try and overclock this thing, because honestly, the hardware is just far too weak to handle even the most basic modern games...
  • XpertVision HD4850 - $349
  • XFX HD4830 - $306
  • Gigabyte VGA nVidia GTX 260 - $583
  • GAINWARD BLISS 8800 GT 1024MB - $300
  • LEADTEK WinFast PX8800 GTS - $333
  • Sparkle GeForce 9800GTX+ - $393
  • Seagate 1.5TB - $342
  • SILVERSTONE 500W Strider ST50F - $151
  • Corsair CX400 - $128
  • Roccat Taito mouse pad - $40
  • Gigabyte EP45-DS3 - $270
  • Dual-Core E5200 - $172
  • SILVERSTONE Power Supply Element ST40EF - $149
  • SILVERSTONE Power Supply Strider ST70F - $290
Of course it could technically work, though I honestly don't think it'll be necessary... Since the XT doesn't require any extra power cables and its total power draw stays under 50W, we should be just fine!
I honestly think grabbing that 2600XT DDR3 with 256MB for $100 over at unknown would actually be the much smarter way to go...

First off, you really ought to take a good, long look at part three of our overclocking guide...

Now, you could certainly try playing around with some overclocking settings, but honestly, you probably won't notice much of a difference—at least not on this particular machine... For any real, noticeable gains, you’d ideally want to be working with something a bit more modern, perhaps an Intel chipset paired with a Core 2 Duo processor if you can swing it... 😉

To make sure we walk you through this properly, step by step, just dive into that guide, give it a shot, and please, don't hesitate to ask if anything seems confusing! Just one little thing though—before you start messing with any clock speeds, make sure you locate the CMOS jumper position in your manual, just in case things go sideways and you need to reset everything back to factory defaults...

There’s absolutely no rush here, really, none at all !!!!!!!! So just take it easy and be careful.

Since you have the guide right there, I'd suggest giving it a thorough read... maybe try starting with 1.3V for the CPU, though depending on which motherboard you're running, you might find yourself needing to bump up those other voltages a bit too...
Well, if you had just mentioned that from the get-go, you could have simply grabbed an NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 and been happy as a clam... honestly, it would have saved us all a lot of unnecessary headache! 🙂
Sure, I hear you, but honestly, the framerate is a bit of a question mark here... If you just pop "NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 review" into Google, you can hunt down some test benches and see how the actual frames hold up in the specific games you're looking at. You really can't expect a card meant for $167 to be cranking out high settings at 1680 resolution...
3870. Why? Because it just does! Honestly, what a silly question to ask, it obviously gives you more FPS... though if you're looking at an 8800 GTS, it probably isn't worth the extra cash. Now, that 4670 is also such a fantastic deal for $183, definitely a better value than the 3870, even if it runs a little bit slower...
If you're looking at $283, then you could go with an 8800 GT 512 or maybe an HD4830... though, if you ask me, it’s totally worth splashing out a little extra cash to grab the GTS instead!
And if you go for $467, you end up with a 4870 instead. 😁 ... it just keeps going in circles like that...

So, what kind of resolution are you actually running on your setup?
Reza?

Daniel Nguyen3 said:but you don't actually need anything more powerful for that specific setup...😉

Honestly, though, you can never have enough FPS... 😉
Oh, come on now, you can't be serious about recommending an X1950PRO... honestly, if you're looking at those options, picking up a 4670 or even a 4650 would be a much faster and significantly better move overall... I am just glad to see you aren't suggesting the X1650, because that would have been a total mistake...
Don't bother engaging with those folks who can't even follow the basic two percent of the rules...
