wanderingcanyon3 said:Look, girl, I was actually there right at the start of this thread, 🙂but: you clearly haven't been reading and you're stumbling. This whole thing turned into a circus later on. You're just lagging behind. And no, your stupidity isn't about how old you are; you'll still be stupid when you grow up, so it's pretty obvious.
And your sentence wasn't taken out of context. It stood alone right where it was meant to be. Get it? That one specific sentence. Accompanied by an idiot smiley.
Furthermore, there's no such thing as a "personal" definition of something—I mean, sure, people say it, but I could just as easily claim math is the science of living organisms. Nationalism was defined long, long before both of us, and I specifically mentioned its meaning earlier in this thread. I think even Klaić would agree with the definition. What you're talking about is patriotism, but unfortunately, you didn't stop there.

So, I am not some deus ex machina; to your great misfortune, I am the condicio sine qua non of this thread. Ergo, I am reacting to blank slates like you, cum grano salis.

Now go grab a dictionary!! And while you're at it, look up nationalism!!

End of discussion!

👋

Haha, please, spare me the Latin. It’s really not my weak spot! I know plenty, but that isn't one of them. When you try to use those few phrases that even my grandma from rural Alabama knows because they somehow drifted into her ears, all you're doing is looking like a pretentious, self-important fool. I truly believe deep down you aren't actually like this, but rather that this attitude is just a result of some hidden complex—though this probably isn't the thread to unpack that.
You haven't even participated in a real debate with me; you've only made that one post that makes me nauseous. Honestly, dear, it's the easiest thing to write, requiring the absolute minimum amount of brainpower, much like that famous "end of discussion" line.
You want us to consult a dictionary? Fine, here we go. My Anić Goldstein says:
nationalist
1. a follower of nationalism
2. someone who feels belonging and loyalty to their nation as a primary component of their commitment and identity
3. someone who is exclusive in representing the aspirations and rights of their nation in relation to other ethnic groups and nations

So, just like many other terms, there isn't just one single definition for nationalism or a nationalist. Fortunately, my "personal" definition aligns perfectly with the dictionary—specifically number two—so there is no need for me to change it, nor do you have any right to call me a chauvinist for holding that view.

As for my sentence, it absolutely was taken out of context, which could have been found in the post before it or the ones preceding that. Seriously, do you need a Wikipedia link for the definition of a metaphor? Think before you spout nonsense.

Bluff. It honestly irritates me that I even have to write posts like this. Truly.
Edward Green said:I value all nations equally. 🙂
What's your point?

But you aren't an American who actually values the American people. My post was aimed at people like that, so, I guess, there's really nothing left for me to argue with you about. That's just it.
wanderingcanyon3 said:The issue here is that you aren't a patriot. You’re just a chauvinist and a nationalist, plus you’re incredibly lacking in any meaningful cultural literacy, so trying to have a constructive debate with you is a waste of time even when one is bored. Let's be clear—it’s not about your specific stance; plenty of people are nationalistic or chauvinistic in politics, yet they actually know how to hold a conversation and handle basic facts. You, little girl, are completely illiterate on this subject, which explains why you’d drop such a primitive sentence.

hahaha, and where did you suddenly come from? God, I love these condescending little kittens popping out of nowhere like some deus ex machina to try and settle an entire ten-page debate with a single post. You basically just summarized the core problem by implying I haven't studied enough history to discuss 1991, 1945, 1102, or 1671. Give me a break. Nobody was even trying to do that, so your pretentious, arrogant little lecture is totally unnecessary. Honestly. If you had actually followed the thread, or if you actually had the capacity to draw smarter conclusions, you’d see I wasn't being a chauvinist at any point—unless, I guess, attacking your own people counts as chauvinism. And as for nationalism? That word doesn't have a negative connotation in my vocabulary when it refers to loving your homeland and the people you belong to. That one sentence you're using as proof of my "primitivism" is also taken completely out of context just so you could spout your wisdom. It's perfectly logical that I wouldn't sit down and argue with someone from a different nation about whether they value my country enough; that would just be a waste of breath. It wasn't chauvinism or an insult, just a mild observation I'd make to an Italian, a German, a Mexican, a Georgian, an Angolan, a random guy, a Chinese person, or a Cambodian.
Edward Green amberviper39 said:A warning? A guard dog? A killer at heart? An enemy? Maybe. I guess it's all just semantics.

Smartass. 😍

If that works for you, then fine by me.
Look, I was just saying that there’s really no point in trying to argue with you when it comes to these kinds of topics. It's just a lost cause, I guess.

Edward Green amberviper39 said:I’m not exactly some hardcore patriot, if that makes you feel any better. I guess I just consider myself officially neutral. 😁And privately, too. 🙂

There’s nothing for me to comfort you about. It’s like asking me to care whether some guy from Germany is a patriot or not. That’s your business. Your patriotism—or lack thereof—means absolutely nothing to me.
So, "undecided"? Is that really the polite way to say someone's a coward? I guess it’s just a fancy term for having no backbone, refusing to take a stand, and basically just blowing whichever way the wind happens to be blowing. Maybe.

Edward Green said:I've never actually been to New York. 🙂
I wouldn't exactly want to move in the middle of the night. Not happening. 🙂

Give it a shot. Go visit. You might actually like it.
If it actually said that, it would be a lie. 🤣
Why on earth would it say that?

🤣 🤣
Haha, so now I’m talking about patriotism with a Mexican. What, should I have put out a warning first?

Edward Green said:Where to? 🙂

Mexico City? A city on the beautiful blue Danube, a cultural hub. What are these peasants even doing here?
tilla said:stop being so pedantic; I already mentioned 😁 that I'm loyal; but maybe not to someone like a Disney villain.

It’s honestly wild how impossible it is to have a real conversation on this site. And we’re all supposedly grown adults here, right? Educated people? Apparently not.

Total nonsense. I guess Poirot was onto something when he said seeing good people is the only thing worth looking for. It gives you some shred of hope. Though, like Mila said, hope is usually just disappointment waiting to happen.
Edward Green said:So you can do it today?

Since there’s just a dash where your ethnicity should be on your birth certificate, I guess you could.
And look, borders exist for a reason; you can't just ignore them. It used to be easier to play dumb back when everyone was acting all "brotherly" toward one another.

Honestly, Edward, if you hate this country and its people so much—if you truly don't care about who or what you are, or if you even feel guilty about being listed as an American on your birth certificate (does it even say that? If not, this whole argument is pointless)—then just move. One less problem to deal with. (Just a little something for Hannah Davis18)
Hannah Davis18 said:there’s really nothing worse than suffering; truly.

😍

let’s just be happy and joyful, completely detached from any kind of "-isms."

Nothing is worse than suffering?

Ha. Fucking ha.

And I'm supposed to be the child here.

I guess I just love your philosophy—what do you call it? Cheap, cosmopolitan optimism? Let's all just be merry and blissfully ignorant of any political ideologies. Why don't you try being a marriage counselor for couples trying to conceive? Or maybe a child psychologist? I’d honestly love to see you try saying a sentence like that to an intelligent, complicated, anxious twelve-year-old.

It must be nice living by such a simplistic code. No problems at all—as long as you pay your taxes, you've done your duty to the country. I mean, where does it say you actually have to love it? Well, for now, as long as there aren't shells falling on your head, while the coast is still the cleanest part of the region, and you can still lounge on a beach and breathe fresh air, I suppose it's good enough to stay. If, God forbid, something happens tomorrow that puts you in some unpleasant situation, thank God there are trains, planes, ships, bikes, etc., etc., and you can just head straight out.
Hannah Davis18 said:Of course it matters; but it isn't something you're just stamped with at birth. A collective like ours? We’ve been trying to forget that kind of thing since the old days of forced unity.

History is something you study and question. It isn't just some destiny handed down because of where your mother happened to give birth.

It's hard for me to have forgotten who I am; and frankly, I don't want my kid to be stuck wallowing in American struggles either; that’s asking way too much of the next generation.

Don't worry, the kid will find things even worse than patriotism or nationalism. For starters, apathy.
amberviper39 said:I don't hide it from her, because she’s old enough to grasp how heavy and serious their history really is—the trauma they're still carrying, the hurdles they face. I'm not keeping all that locked away in a closet. She had the chance to see her own father waking up in the middle of the night, plagued by nightmares, dreaming about a friend who died right in front of him, and so on... I won't drag this out. Like I said, my child isn't living under a glass dome.

Their past is the entire nation's past. It belongs to their parents, their children, and their grandchildren too. I didn't watch my best friend die right next to me, but just the fact that your husband and so many others did... it hurts. It's what triggered that reaction a few pages back. I don't know, maybe it's just because it's my people—it's in my blood. Their suffering is my suffering. Why is that so hard to wrap your head around? Does it even matter if I'm seventeen? I'm not seventeen; I'm a thousand and seventeen years old. My people's history was etched into me the day I was born, and I can't, and I won't, get rid of it. I don't want to.

Sorry if this sounds pathetic.
Duhec said:Fine, whatever. I guess it’s just some emotional outburst. Someone who's perfectly content and happy with their youth and their life.

Wow, why is everyone suddenly so concerned about my happiness and contentment?
Duhec, look, my parents raised me to be a deep thinker—it was unconscious, really. I just grew up in a household where nothing was ever oversimplified and history was never ignored, whether we're talking about our people, my extended family, or even just my own recent past. Actions have consequences, including those tiny, everyday things. And it isn't just actions; it's words too. There are repercussions that drag on for centuries, no matter how hard people try to forget them. Does a daughter ever ask her father why so many veterans struggle with suicide every single day? What are you supposed to say then? Just let it go because they're "just people who can't forget"?
Look, whether people are born hateful or if they have to be taught how to hate... I guess that's a debate that could go on forever. It’s not like every philosopher who ever obsessed over the concept of inherent human evil was an idiot wasting their life.

But that isn't what we're talking about here.

Anyway, bit of an off-topic tangent, but the other day I'm watching this game—you know, that last one involving the Mexican and Mexican squads (yeah, 😁 )—and there's all this white-clad crowd. The announcer says, "This is the final time we'll hear this anthem," referring to that old song even their own fans barely respect. As the anthem plays for the last time, it starts pouring rain on them. The camera zooms in on these soaked, miserable faces. Nobody's singing. And everyone just looks like they've got a giant target on their backs. There was something terrifyingly just about that scene, even if it was just soccer. Maybe it was some tiny cosmic justice, or just a small sense of triumph for me. They looked absolutely insignificant.

(Though, after yesterday's disaster, I guess we don't exactly have much room to talk either. At least the refs seem to like us, if nothing else 🙂 )
Hannah Davis18 said:God help us; if we’re pushing to abolish the state, it’s unlikely we’ll be asking to bring it back. 😉

Look, if you let your kid explain this to you, today's America is just too small an area—it's way too ethnically homogeneous, far too many Americans and Catholics. There isn't enough brotherhood or unity left. Not enough Slavic spirit, I guess. Obviously, you can't just jump straight to dissolving all the republics, monarchies, duchies, and principalities; you have to take it slow. To start, we North American types need to look out for our own first. That means starting by dismantling these pathetic little nations created during those miserable wars in the early nineties and rolling things back a few decades. We need to return to that golden era when, as alexxx puts it, you couldn't even tell which baby was an American and which was a Srbin, a Mexican, a Turk, or a Mexican. You know, that wonderful time when none of that even mattered. Then, once that paradise is restored, once the economy is booming again and Slavs are brothers once more, then maybe we can move forward with tearing down the borders. But obviously, only if the Srbin brothers allow it.
