CHICKEN COUSCOUS

Quick and easy (at least if you ask me)

- Prep the couscous (use a 2:1 water to couscous ratio)

- Cover the pot, let it soften, then toss in some canned tomatoes. Once it starts bubbling, throw in a bag of frozen mixed veggies. When everything’s soft, stir in whatever spices you're feeling and mix in the couscous

- Pan-sear the chicken and dig in 😁

Too bad I didn't snap a photo, it actually looked pretty decent... 🙂

BUCKWHEAT WITH BEANS AND CORN

just a recipe I remembered... my mom used to make this one

- sauté some onion and carrots. once the onion gets soft, toss in the buckwheat and fry it for a bit.
- after that, pour in some warm water and throw in half a bouillon cube
- add more water if you think it needs it
- once the buckwheat is tender, stir in the beans and corn and let it all simmer together for a bit
- she used to take half a can of Campbell's tomato soup, mix it up, and dump that in too

I know, I know, I'm being annoying with all these "recipes," but I just love this stuff 🙂 buckwheat is everything 🙂 so hopefully this helps someone out... 😉

steelskipper74 said:you only see stuff like this in small towns back home.. I totally get the vibe, especially if you're in some tiny suburb where everyone at the local gym stares at you like you just landed from outer space.. though, Zumba... hmm, that’s hardly even "fitness" 😬 you could just dance in your living room using YouTube 🙂

well, it's not quite the same thing with YouTube. And yeah, it *is* fitness. Besides, Zumba classes usually happen two or three times a week everywhere. It can be decent cardio for her. Assuming she actually moves, obviously, and doesn't just flail around aimlessly.

I tried doing Zumba at home with YouTube once and I definitely did way more fake dancing than when I actually went to a group class.

Anyway, you gotta start somewhere... 😉

Cannellini Beans

bell peppers, carrots
tomato sauce
cannellini beans

Sauté the peppers and carrots. Pour in some tomato sauce, then toss in the beans after about ten minutes. Season however you want. Personally, I went heavy on the salt, tons of pepper, a teaspoon of hot sauce—made it killer spicy—and a little spoonful of mustard.
I can't tell if this was actually thaaaaat good or if I was just starving when I made it... but it hit the spot and was super fast... 😁

2. Tuna Salad

Just grab some tuna 🙂
tomatoes
peppers
cucumber

Chop everything up, drizzle on some lemon juice and olive oil... I actually threw in some Greek yogurt too, and topped the whole thing off with a bit of crumbled feta

Man, with this heatwave hitting us... 😉

tuna salad with cannellini beans

1 small can of cannellini beans
1 small can of corn
2 cans of tuna
a few pickled peppers, sliced into strips
1 medium onion

just toss everything together and drizzle it with lemon juice, olive oil, and parsley

I think I got everything in there somewhere... my mom and I totally stuffed ourselves on this 🙂

It’s nothing groundbreaking, but the flavor totally took me back to those homemade fruit popsicles we used to make when I was a kid—you know, the ones made from real bananas or kiwi.

Basically, I just tossed a banana, a peach, and some dried prunes into the blender with some Greek yogurt. Honestly, it would've been way better if I’d let it chill in the freezer for a bit longer, but I was starving... 😁

I'm stuffed now. 😁 For me, though, that flavor combo was actually pretty spot on.

Benjamin Murphy2 said:So, first things first, let's separate tapeworms from the rest of the intestinal parasite crowd... you can only pick those up by eating raw or undercooked meat—yeah, even fish included.

When it comes to almost any other roundworm, except for pinworms, the eggs actually need some time sitting in the dirt to develop. We’re talking soil contaminated with human waste. Honestly, I highly doubt commercial vegetable gardens in the States are being fertilized like that these days...

And don't worry about those cat or dog worms; humans can't catch them. At most, you might get some skin inflammation where a larva tries to burrow in and dies, since they enter through moist skin...

A worm in your nose isn't even that unheard of, really. Since part of the pinworm life cycle involves traveling through the lungs, you can end up coughing them up, and then they just... end up in your nose.

But then why does everyone say you have to wash lettuce so thoroughly because you could get tapeworms on it? And you can get infected with dog worms too, but they won't actually grow into full worms in a person; instead, their larvae just travel through your body... it's dangerous if those larvae end up in an organ... or so I read... I don't know... You can also catch tapeworms from dogs, too... and I remember something about this from biology class back in school...

I had no idea about the fish thing... man, even smoked salmon...😢

Nathan Ross said:I get it. I'm just hoping we both get lucky and nothing comes of this. Fingers crossed! 🙂

My only regret is that I didn't react better—if I'd just kept the sandwich, I could have filed a formal complaint with Consumer Reports because this is absolutely disgraceful.

Yeah, me too, really hoping it's nothing 🙂 I'll let you know what the doctor says 😁 hahahaah
And yeah, you're right... they need to be reported, otherwise they'll just keep doing this!

Sarah Garcia84 said:As far as I know, you can't catch cat roundworms directly since they're a different species; you really just pick up the eggs from their fur. That’s why you always have to watch out for cats and dogs if you're growing lettuce in your garden, as they're such common carriers for parasites. I honestly have no idea how that guy ended up with a worm in his nose... he must have had a massive infestation.

edit: Oh man, especially be careful with those lettuce sandwiches. Most of the time, the greens aren't even washed properly, if they're washed at all. I never eat takeout, absolutely never... I just don't trust them. They're only interested in their bottom line, and they couldn't care less about hygiene or public health much less than profit.

Ughh... I really hope it wasn't cats getting into the salad... damn it...

Edward Murphy4 said:Are indoor cats actually dangerous? Even the ones that never set foot outside—like, they've literally never even stepped onto a porch. Can they still somehow carry parasites despite being total homebodies?

Reading this just gave me the creeps.🙄

Man... I don't know... maybe we're all just overthinking this... 🙂 hahaha no we aren't 🙂 but I don't know... maybe your cat picked up worms from its mother, for example... but I doubt it... especially if they stay inside and just use the litter box... you would've noticed by now if they had worms...

Nathan Ross said:I almost never eat salad when I'm out either, but right in front of me, a few people bought the exact same sandwich—including a woman with her kid—and I just thought, well, surely they wouldn't leave it unwashed.

Then, halfway through eating, I notice these black spots. At first, I figured it was just bits of prosciutto or some seeds, so I actually stopped and opened the sandwich up—the entire arugula bed was covered in dirt, and it was smeared all over the inside of the bread. It made my stomach turn.

And if there is one thing I am meticulous about, it's food safety—specifically leafy greens. Whether it's lettuce or spinach, I wash every single leaf one by one, no matter how long it takes. Now I feel like an idiot because I wasn't thinking in that moment.

I'm heading to the doctor tomorrow to get a referral. This is awful!!!

Ugh, it's like I'm listening to myself talk here... 🙂that whole thing about washing every single leaf... 🙂but honestly, that's the only time I feel safe. Though, you know what... when I hear about people just wiping a tomato on their shirt and calling it a day, I feel better by comparison. 😁 No point obsessing over it now... we already ate it... we'll just be more careful next time...😉

Keith Wells2 said:Just hit up your doctor to get a referral (wait, I forgot about telehealth) 😍 ... You drop a sample, wait a few days, and boom—you know if you're hosting any uninvited guests or not...

I saw this thing on TV back around 2004. Some Discovery Channel documentary about human parasites 😲
Man, what I saw... absolute nightmare fuel. This guy went to an MTB World Cup down in Indonesia, trekking through rivers and tall grass with busted-up legs, and he picked up these worms that were crawling under his skin everywhere. For years. He couldn't sleep, couldn't function, nothing. Even the doctors were stumped... eventually, they had to hit him with some heavy-duty insecticide just to get those things to retreat... 😉
Ever since seeing that, I've been a complete paranoid when it comes to worms 😬

ugh,...... better not to watch that stuff,.... but I don't think we see cases like that here in the States🙂

Nathan Ross said:I’m honestly just relieved this thread exists.

So, I picked up a sandwich at a local deli today—ricotta and prosciutto—and about halfway through, I realized there was actual dirt still stuck to the ricotta. I felt physically sick, tossed the rest of it in the trash, and now, naturally, I'm spiraling.

Where am I supposed to go for that testing you all mentioned? Should I head to an urgent care clinic or go straight to the hospital? And what does the process actually look like? Is it a broad screen for any kind of parasite, or does it only target specific ones?

I have no clue,... I guess you'd go to a doctor for a referral,... I think they draw blood or something,.... you hand it to a lab and they send it off to who knows where,...
That's why I never order anything with lettuce on a sandwich,.... they barely even wash it,... gross. How can they even show their faces like that???
I hope the tests cover everything possible,.... I play with animals a lot and even though I'm a "germaphobe" and wash my hands every single time,.... I'm never really sure 🙂 maybe I'm just overreacting 🙂

As for the garlic stuff? Total nonsense.

And here I was, eating it like it was my job...🙂 thanks a million... I can already see the look on my doctor's face when I tell her what I've been doing... let me explain why I went down the garlic rabbit hole though...
So, this guy pulls a worm right out of his nose... he was basically the chef at my old workplace, and my first thought was, "Great, I definitely caught that." Since I wasn't working near my regular doctor, I went to an urgent care clinic to see if they could just give me some preventative pills. But the doctor there gave me the whole speech about how she couldn't prescribe anything without testing first because not all meds work for every parasite, blah blah blah, don't want to wreck your liver, etc... then she tells me, "Just eat a few cloves of garlic with some olive oil for a few days." I didn't mind since I actually like garlic, but I really believed her when she said it would help...

And seriously, it's disgusting! He worked as a cook and it came out of his nose! And get this—he had done some plumbing work six months prior... seemed a little sketchy to me... but whatever...

vividsailor7 said:Yeah. Just keep in mind that incubation periods vary wildly depending on which parasite you're dealing with. Usually, though, we're looking at about 7 days.

Thanks, everyone... 🙂 I just hope there isn't nothing to show for it... but until then, you might want to go a little heavier on the garlic. 🙂 I heard that’s actually fine to use against those parasites... 🙂 It’s just about the prices at this point... and one more thing... does that analysis actually catch every single possible parasite if they're there? Ugh, I swear I'm such a hypochondriac. Honestly, I think it's because of that video where that guy pulled a worm right out of his nose... total trauma... 😁 That was absolutely terrifying... even that one episode of House where he pulls the string out of that girl... it didn't help at all. I can't even bring myself to think about it... 🙂

vividsailor7 said:Maybe you'll be fine, maybe you won't. But most likely, nothing is going to happen.

Look, I've already calmed down today... but I'm still heading to the doctor🙂 because if I don't, I'll just keep obsessing over it all night.🙂 So, how long should I actually wait before getting that lab test done?🙂 Is waiting 2-3 weeks okay?
Intestinal parasites in Health ·
ugh, I don't even know... it's gross... but honestly, nobody’s actually peeing in the garden... maybe some cats 😁 I can't tell which is worse... anyway, I've got a doctor's appointment in two weeks... if I actually picked something up, it'll have time to show up by then... there's zero point going early just to get a fake negative result...
I am spiraling because of this stupid misunderstanding! It's pure paranoia... and I swear I'm being super careful... washing my hands constantly, scrubbing lettuce until it's basically soup, and now this... I once saw a guy pull a worm out of his nose that was like 7cm long... ever since then, I've been obsessed with parasites! That's why I'm seeing the doctor! No point getting worked up now... I ate 😁 so whatever happens, happens... 🙂 now I've got this new fear... what if my cat has worms and was pooping in the yard?... god, I don't even want to think about it 😁 but basically... does a standard stool sample catch any kind of parasite, or do you need special testing? I'm probably going to drive my doctor crazy... I don't care... let them run every single test under the sun! It's not like he's the one who ate an unwashed burger 🙂
Intestinal parasites in Health ·
help me 😁 don't ask how, but I just realized I ate an unwashed arugula leaf! honestly, I won't be able to relax until I see a doctor... the thought of parasites is absolutely terrifying... I'm usually such a neurotic about this, washing every single salad leaf in four different rinses... today I thought it was clean, but my mom just gave it a quick wipe instead... the only silver lining is that it came from our backyard garden and wasn't some mystery produce from Whole Foods... now for the stupid question... what's actually going to happen to me?

Hey ladies, quick question?

So, I’ve been on Jasmine birth control for about a year now, but for the last two months, my period has been acting super weird. The color isn't right—it’s more brown—and the flow is incredibly light. It barely lasts three days max...
I can't tell if it’s actually because of the pill, but honestly, the color is starting to freak me out. Has anyone else dealt with this?

Hey
