Jason Fisher78 said:There are really only two ways to look at it. Either they genuinely believe that, or they're trapped in a media echo chamber where saying anyone else is superior would just trigger accusations of jealousy toward Michael Jordan; it’s safer to just name him and avoid the headache. That seems far more likely. But honestly, enough about Michael Jordan for now. There is a whole parade of overrated athletes out there we could dissect instead.

😂😂 Give it a rest, man... you're being exhausting.

frozentiger6 said:Jason Fisher78 just threw out some raw numbers.

And through those stats, he’s trying to prove who actually knows their stuff—suggesting Michael Jordan belongs somewhere in the tier of Scottie Pippen, or something along those lines; I don't know, I rarely bother with those data sets myself. I don't need them. I had the privilege of watching Michael Jordan for years, and to me, he remains the greatest to ever play the game. Just as Ivo Balic was the greatest handball player ever, in my eyes.
Now, why doesn't anyone ever bring up Karabatkov’s statistics? 😵

Why is Michael Jordan the greatest? It's because whether it was the first minute or the last, his execution remained identical. You won't find that in any spreadsheet. To truly grasp something like that, you need a certain level of "prior knowledge" about sports—perhaps having actually played at an amateur level. It helps you realize that athletes aren't just hardware or software modules whose quality can be fully captured by a computer readout.

Honestly, this post should probably serve as the final word on this entire saga...🙏 😁

That final paragraph reminded me of something. It was back during the Chicago Bulls-Utah Jazz finals, during that season when Scottie Pippen was struggling with those back issues... and the guy just had an off night. The morning after the game, I’m standing at the subway station, and there’s this guy next to me, chatting away with a buddy, just relentlessly trashing Scottie Pippen. He was hurling all sorts of insults, calling him an invalid, acting like he knew better than anyone how poorly he’d played. So, I look at this guy, and he’s clearly someone who looks like they struggle to even walk straight, hunched over like an eighty-seven-year-old woman, spine bent at a ninety-degree angle. And I thought to myself, you absolute moron, take a look in a mirror and see what you actually look like. How could you even manage a basic two-step, let alone judge someone who had a bad game for perfectly obvious physical reasons? Who are you to feel entitled to talk trash when you're less functional than a single-celled amoeba?

It’s always the idiots who have never played a real sport in their lives—aside from maybe some mindless hack—who jump on the bandwagon. They’ve only ever seen a real game on TV, but they make sure to find a way to mock someone, calling them pathetic or limited or whatever else comes to mind...

Ryan Vaughn7 said:Well, Worthy didn't block anything five seconds before the buzzer. Fred Brown essentially handed him the ball by mistake when he misidentified his teammate, which you can see right here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Nnc_itdEc
But that’s beside the point; you’re just cherry-picking data to suit your narrative. You conveniently ignored the fact that during the '82 season, Michael was a freshman while Worthy was a senior. That year, Jordan averaged 13.5 points and 4.4 rebounds, whereas Worthy put up 15.6 points and 6.3 rebounds—hardly a massive gap. Furthermore, Worthy actually had worse stats than Jordan during his own freshman year, and Jordan eventually surpassed those senior numbers of Worthy's during his own final season.
Ultimately, I don't understand why you're getting so defensive about ESPN naming Jordan as one of the most deserving players for that title. They didn't say he was *the* most deserving, just one of them. He dropped 16 points in the final—second only to Worthy—and nailed the game-winning shot. What more do you need to justify being called "one of the most deserving"?

Look, sorry, but everyone was playing for Jordan, plus the guy clearly can't swim... honestly... just sit this one out.☕

It honestly baffles me how the snow hasn't managed to land one more embarrassing stain on Jordan's reputation by pointing out he couldn't even swim to save his life... just saying...☕

That's just classic American marketing... at the end of the day, they know how to sell anyone anything, even if it's complete garbage.

Yeah, Reebok ran the exact same game... I had a pair of Jordan's models without the pump, maybe his second or third release, and damn, those shoes were solid. I had them for five years, easy, and even after three and a half years of pounding the concrete courts, they were still holding up fine.🤣

Ever since the drivers started being protected like they’re precious cargo, Formula 1 has become incredibly overhyped... it was much more intense twenty or thirty years ago when there was actual risk involved.🤣

Jason Fisher78 As rowdytinker3 points out:
It’s quite predictable. Americans have this insatiable hunger for an "all-American hero," and back when the NBA was aggressively expanding, someone decided he would be that icon—and they succeeded. I am not suggesting he wasn't a talented player, but his god-like status was a masterpiece of marketing rather than pure basketball merit. His PR machine was relentless, starting with those gold chains at the Slam Dunk Contest and never letting up. The media treated his every move as if it were the action of a superhuman, even though other players were doing the exact same things; they just weren't operating under a microscope. Then there was the constant narrative that he could win a championship anywhere, a theory we saw play out extensively in Washington, D.C. If he hadn't had Scottie Pippen by his side, and if he hadn't been granted privileges unlike anyone else in NBA history before he had even proven himself as more than just above average, he wouldn't be holding all those trophies. He likely would have ended up in that tier of highly skilled players who, due to poor surroundings, achieved little despite impressive individual stats—players like Dominique Wilkins, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, or Clyde Drexler.

The media machine operates in predictable cycles; you saw it clearly when Michael Jordan stepped away. They felt an urgent need to manufacture a successor—someone who could fill the void, yet inevitably lacked his greatness—leading to a long string of "Baby Jordans" before we finally landed on the era of Kobe Bryant. It was a messy transition, especially considering how Shaq’s statistical dominance often overshadowed the actual flow of play. Just imagine if Shaq had played more like Dennis Rodman, relentlessly vacuuming up every rebound just to feed Kobe. And don't even get me started on those tactical maneuvers by Steve Kerr or that legendary performance by Toni Kukoč against the Utah Jazz. Without those specific contributions, those championship rings and the massive stardom wouldn't exist. Once Kobe became too much of a liability for the narrative, they simply pivoted to LeBron James. I'm not suggesting Kobe wasn't elite; I'm saying the media plays a very calculated role in shaping these legacies.

I find myself wondering exactly what metrics one would use to argue that Michael Jordan holds any true superiority over someone like Bill Russell.

What an absolute mountain of unadulterated bullshit this whole mess is.🤣

Someone once made the observation that he had to be the one to pull it off, and sure enough, he was. But honestly? He should probably just go find some professional help and step away from the spotlight for a while.☕

If he had only managed one or maybe two championships just by being lucky, I might listen, but he has six. He’s got NCAA titles, a mountain of awards, and medals to boot. There is undeniable proof of him delivering in those high-stakes moments when none of the players you're listing could step up. Yet, you still have the nerve to claim he’s overrated, arguing that his success was merely the byproduct of having Scottie Pippen by his side. You seem to forget that while Toni Kukoč had that one standout performance, it was the man himself who secured the title in that final game—the one involving that stolen ball and the decisive basket. Not to mention that earlier game where he played through nearly 40 degrees of heat, putting up a performance unlike anything we've ever seen to secure the win. And then there's the argument that the NBA was just expanding at the time... honestly, give me a break.😂😂

Comparing him to Bill Russell is like comparing apples to oranges. Trying to weigh fifty or sixty years of NBA history against the specific era of the nineties is just absurd. Everyone already consensus-agreed that Michael Jordan was the greatest player to ever step onto a court, yet there’s always some random guy popping up out of nowhere just to act like he's got a grudge and start talking nonsense. Just like you.

God... damn.🙏🙏

rowdytinker3 said:It doesn't really matter if Kerr sank that three when he was left completely isolated like a ghost because they doubled Michael Jordan.
When was the last time Michael Jordan was actually left alone for a clutch shot?

Honestly, the whole argument is pointless.

On a side note, we aren't even talking about three-pointers here; it was a two-pointer in question... and this is coming from someone who clearly didn't watch that final.

Jason Fisher78 said:It’s interesting that people only credit Scottie Pippen. When Steve Kerr was hitting those crucial threes, did anyone wonder if Michael Jordan would have even secured the title without that spacing? And frankly, I find myself questioning if they ever would have overcome the Utah Jazz if Toni Kukoč hadn't played the game of his life against them.

And how exactly do you claim to know what might have happened? Are you some kind of prophet now? Besides, who was it that actually set the stage and gave Steve Kerr the opportunity to sink that three? It was Toni Kukoč, wasn't it? 🤣

What ridiculous comparisons people try to make just to justify a headline—claiming it all because Steve Kerr hit one clutch three-pointer or because Toni Kukoč went on a tear. This is a team sport, after all. Besides, Michael Jordan already proved everything to the entire world, regardless of whether you choose to see it or not. You simply don't get it, and frankly, you never will.☕

That’s exactly the crux of the matter. Everyone was playing just for him.

What an absolute joke of a statement... Michael Jordan is nothing more than a fraud, a fact that seems to escape everyone except Jason Fisher78, who is clearly the only one perceptive enough to see through the massive conspiracy claiming that Clear vision is just some common pretender who managed to pull all of this off:
A 6-time NBA Champion.
A 6-time NBA Finals MVP.
Five-time NBA MVP.
Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist.
Michael Jordan's career achievements include being a 14-time NBA All-Star.
Ten selections to the All-NBA First Team is quite a feat.
Nine selections to the All-Defensive First Team.
The NBA Rookie of the Year award remains one of those fleeting honors that often fails to predict true greatness.
Because everyone from James Worthy to Paxton, then moving through Horace Grant, Scottie Pippen, and finally Toni Kukoč, was essentially playing for his benefit.🙏🙏

Jason Fisher78 said:😂 It’s always the same pattern—some arrogant kid shows up, thinks he’s mastered the game because he read a few books and dominated the local playground, and suddenly feels entitled to lecture everyone else. Just slow down, kid; you'll understand when you're older. 🙂

I haven't even touched a basketball magazine since the turn of the millennium... and for your information, I was following the game long before you were even a thought, back when it was truly gritty, somewhere around the late '80s... maybe the '87-'88 season.😉

Carl Garcia22 said:It really depends on your perspective.
He’s undoubtedly overrated if you’re strictly counting trophies and hardware, but when you look at what he accomplished during his absolute prime, you have to tip your hat. For those eight years alone, he was a force of nature; even looking at that narrow window, he earned his status as a superstar.
I’d compare Allen Iverson to Mike Tyson. There was a specific era where one dominated his game in a way the boxing world had simply never witnessed before.
In my view, we’ll see another Chicago before we ever see another Allen Iverson.

That comparison just doesn't hold water... you're mixing apples and oranges here... an individual sport versus a team sport... there's no connection whatsoever.

Basketball is a team sport, and you're never going to find players valued like Allen Iverson—the kind of guy who, by your own logic, tore the league apart without ever lifting a single trophy. Honestly, those are the types of players that leave a bitter taste.

Henry Lee84 As Henry Lee84 remarked:
The cold, hard truth is that Babe Ruth is a completely insignificant figure when you look at him through a global lens.☕ It’s all a bit much, isn't it? Quite exaggerated, if you ask me.☕

True, but the OP was specifically talking about looking at individual sports rather than zooming out to the global stage.

Henry Lee84 said:MLB is an American pastime; on the global stage, it’s essentially irrelevant. 🙂

If it weren't for Hollywood, nobody would even know who Babe Ruth was—just some obscure figure from outside the USA, much like the sport he played. 🤷🙂

🙂

Look, you troll, try reading the opening post again... maybe if you actually grasped the point of this thread, you wouldn't be busy spilling your leftover wisdom everywhere, trying to contribute something more substantial than just dismissing sports because they don't suit your specific tastes.

Instead of all this mindless chatter, try saying something concrete... I honestly can't make sense of these hollow remarks. 👍

It seems I have nothing to say on this matter. As darkjackal70 says:
God, you have to laugh at this guy. He’s actually out here comparing a butcher shop to my favorite local steakhouse. Unbelievable.☕
Which specific arguments are you actually making? I have already pointed out several times that staying within our own established frameworks—or even adopting those of other nations who don't constantly obsess over some random athlete's name—carries far more weight than any celebrity worship. Unless, of course, you’re one of those mindless North American enthusiasts who lives to parrot their tired tropes and constant posturing.
Why is this so difficult for anyone to grasp?
Any sane person can see that comparing a bocce player to Babe Ruth in the same breath is absurd, but let’s be honest—it was nothing more than a damn parable.
I’m honestly convinced that more people in this country recognize the name Ty Cobb than they do Ruth, largely because the movie *Cobb* was such a hit here—and it really comes down to exactly what Scipio pointed out: it all boils down to marketing.
Between the Japanese expats and the locals in Philly, it’s pretty obvious that everyone is just obsessed with anything branded as American.☕
Please, allow me to suggest that failing to recognize players from the turn of the last century in a country like America, where MLB isn't exactly a cultural staple, shouldn't be characterized as a lack of basic decency or class.

So, is it actually difficult for you to grasp that by leading with that initial comment, you completely missed the point?

Who on earth decided Babe was the greatest athlete of all time? You might want to actually bother reading the original post and the surrounding comments more closely; perhaps then you'd realize that calling him the "greatest ever" was specifically regarding MLB, not a sweeping statement about sports in general.

People seem more interested in nitpicking specific sports rather than addressing the broader landscape of athletics as a whole. If you few extreme enthusiasts would realize that, perhaps this thread wouldn't be so cluttered with off-topic nonsense and those ridiculous, paradoxical comparisons you keep throwing around.

Adam Moore said:By the way, if we're going to sit here and debate which athletes have been overrated throughout history, I feel compelled to point out that Babe Ruth certainly doesn't belong on that list.

Just thinking off the top of my head, one name from the NBA immediately comes to mind when discussing overhyped players... Allen Iverson.

It’s true... he looks rough and acts even worse. From what I hear, his lifestyle is a constant cycle of drinking and smoking, and he lacks any semblance of class. To him, sophisticated etiquette is about as foreign as a supercomputer would be to someone living in a remote war zone.
