MacBook overheating issues in IT Support ·
shadowlynx102 said:Wait, how exactly is your MacBook going to die mid-update? You've got a battery, right? Besides, BIOS updates are done through macOS these days—not some old-school DOS floppy thing from twenty years ago—and they usually take like a minute or two. As for the repair shop, you can only really trust it if your buddy was the one who actually did the work. If he handed it off to some other technician, how do you even know they actually opened it up? Maybe they just blew out some dust and called it a day. It sounds to me like they probably just cleaned the surface. And honestly, I don't know if your MacBook has one fan or two like those cases I linked earlier, but it’s possible one of them just gave out.

I've never actually done a BIOS update myself, so I'm not exactly an expert on that—and thanks for the heads-up, I didn't realize you could just do it through macOS.
The MacBook was definitely opened and cleaned, though, because I was sitting there having a coffee at the shop right when my friend was finishing up.
Hmm, I'm not entirely sure how many fans it has, but it might be a shot in the dark that one of them died.
Thanks 👍

I thought about that, but I can't seem to find anything that actually looks right for me.

shadowlynx102 said:The real question is how they actually cleaned it at the repair shop and what steps they took. Also, sometimes computers just have sensor issues and give weird temperature readings. Third, if you touch it and it feels genuinely hot, then it's actually hot—the numbers on the screen don't matter as much because, like I said, the sensors might be lying to you.
Now I see other people are having these exact same issues too, more info here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Noteboo...M/td-p/1360861

A buddy of mine works at that shop and he cleaned it himself, so I'm pretty sure there wasn't any mess-up there. The MacBook is definitely overheating—I can feel the heat coming off the left side of the keyboard, and sometimes when I pick it up, the top left corner is so hot to the touch that I'm assuming the sensors are actually working fine.
Last night I kept it propped up on the desk so it was "elevated"—meaning the left side wasn't resting on the table—and while watching HD video or whatever, it didn't go over 75 degrees once.
Would the temperature drop if I got some kind of metal stand to put under it instead of leaving it on a wooden desk?
I'm staying far away from that BIOS update thing, though. A friend of mine fried his motherboard once because the power cut out during an update. 😁

Hey everyone, I’ve been rocking this HP Pavilion dv7 3190eo for a while now, but I’m running into some serious overheating issues.
I’ve actually taken it into a repair shop twice in the last six months to have it deep cleaned and the thermal paste replaced—but honestly, it hasn't really done much to help.
I just picked it up from the shop today, and as soon as I fired up Skype and opened Twitch on Chrome (probably at 720p), the temperature immediately spiked to about 82-83 degrees Celsius.
Is there anything else I can even do to cool this thing down?
I tried using a cooling pad, but it’s kind of useless—I can't find one big enough to actually hit the left side of the laptop where the heat is. Most of these pads just blow air at the center, which stays at a fine 32 degrees anyway.
Here’s what my temps look like right now:

So, I guess I should just go ahead and slap Windows XP on it then?

Nathan Ramos said:just being honest here... did you actually install EVERY single driver for your laptop?

And yeah, the graphics card needs its own drivers too.

Device Manager shows that all my drivers are up to date
The SM bus controller, Universal Serial bus controller, and an "Unknown Device" don't have any drivers for them
Those three are sitting under "Other devices"—meanwhile, the Universal Serial bus entries at the bottom of the list show ten items that are all supposedly updated

Hey,
so I picked up this model mentioned above without an OS pre-installed. I went ahead and installed Windows 7 Ultimate, but my CPU usage is sitting at over 60% constantly—and if I try to open a browser, it hits 100% immediately and everything just starts stuttering.
I've formatted this thing ten times now—tried both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, swapped from Home Premium to Ultimate, etc.—but it’s always the same story.
For drivers, I grabbed the wireless and LAN ones, then went to the AMD site to get their utility to find the best driver for the laptop, which I installed, and I even tried pulling stuff from the Dell Inspiron site, but nothing changes.
Basically, I have a totally fresh Windows install with nothing but Chrome and the drivers on it, yet I still can't even play an HD video on YouTube. 🙂
Hiccups in Health ·
I’m having a real issue here—I’ve been hiccuping for over 30 hours now.
Basically, I’ll get hit with them for maybe 2 or 3 hours at a time, then they just stop on their own for half an hour or so before starting right back up again.
Last night was a total wash because I couldn't sleep at all, and honestly, my chest is actually starting to ache from all the constant spasming.
I’ve tried pretty much every random trick I could find online to make it stop, but nothing is working. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? And... is it probably overkill to head to the ER over this?
