Skydiving in Other Sports ·
silentowl74 said:I’m starting this thread here because it feels like the right crowd—people who might actually have some skydiving experience or at least a decent grasp of anatomy.

I’ve run into a little dilemma, and I’d be so grateful if anyone could share their insight or expertise. I’m not trying to play doctor, obviously, and I fully intend to follow medical advice, but my GP is the only one available right now since my orthopedist is booked out for months. Waiting half a year for a second opinion just isn't an option for me...

So, I was planning on going skydiving, and it never even crossed my mind that my old knee injury might make things complicated. About ten years ago, I tore my meniscus—had arthroscopic surgery, maybe some injections too, nothing too crazy. Since then, I’ve dealt with occasional patellar dislocations. My orthopedist basically told me: if you aren't playing pro sports, you don't need another surgery; just avoid activities that trigger the dislocation (so, stick to the gym with caution), or just live your life and accept that this annoying thing will always be part of the deal. He gave me a "fake" follow-up appointment because he could tell I had no intention of sitting on the sidelines for the rest of my life! I know there's a difference between someone who's been an athlete since childhood and someone who just stays active recreationally, but I've been involved in some kind of sport since preschool, even if injuries kept me from going all out. For the last year, I've been hitting the gym pretty consistently with decent results, and my bike is basically my primary way of getting around...

Anyway, that's the quick rundown of my situation. Here is what I'm wondering:

1. Has anyone here actually gone skydiving? If so, can you describe the force you feel during that "rebound" when the cord pulls you back up? I reached out to some jump organizers, and they told me the impact on your legs is roughly the same as jumping off a one-foot ledge.

And a question for those who might know more about sports injuries and general physical health:

2. Is there a real risk of my knee popping out during the jump? Based on your intuition, would you recommend I go ahead with it? Why or why not?

I would be incredibly thankful if anyone could answer even just the first question! Any experience at all helps. I posted this in this sub-forum because the "other sports" section doesn't seem to have the same active vibe... 😉 Just to reiterate, I am absolutely going to follow my doctor's lead, but I’d love to hear your thoughts—whether you're telling me to go for it or encouraging me to stay away... 😬 I'm honestly feeling a bit desperate about this...

I've done it three times, and there were no sudden jolts... I see you mentioned you're hitting the gym and cycling, so I really don't think it should be an issue.

slydriver52 said:Beyond fitness, whey concentrate is actually used in alternative medicine—something we’ve touched on before... but obviously, they aren't using stuff like Pro Whey or Gold Standard Whey for that. Instead, it’s strictly high-grade concentrate sourced from raw milk, coming from cows that graze on open pastures rather than being fed all sorts of synthetic additives🙂. That kind of premium concentrate is pretty pricey, especially when it's part of specific medical therapies, so you really can't even compare it to the supplements we're using day-to-day
.

True, Optimum Nutrition isn't exactly vetted for that sort of thing...

I’ve got a question too... I picked up one of those protein bars from CVS, they claim 13 grams of protein. Are they actually any good compared to the more expensive stuff? (I know similar questions have popped up before...)
Which protein powders actually taste the best? I saw some girl emphasizing flavor here, and honestly, that matters more to me than the price tag. Just as long as it isn't 65% carbs like, say, what Herbajebenilajf uses... Thx 😉

Those protein bars? They're basically just sugar and junk...

And as for whey flavor, that's totally subjective. It's like asking someone what the prettiest car or girl is...

From what I've tried, Optimum Nutrition, Dymatize, MusclePharm, Gaspari... all their chocolate flavors were tasty...

But regarding that Herbajebenilajf thing, all I can say is 😂😂

Just take 5g of creatine right after your workout during your post-workout window... As for that dizziness, it might just be a temporary thing while your body adjusts. Honestly, if anything causes that, it's more likely to be the whey than the creatine... And here's a little pro tip regarding how well creatine dissolves: you can actually dissolve it in warm water first. Just heat up about half a glass of water, stir the creatine in until it's fully dissolved, then top it off with cold water and drink it all down

Oh, I forgot to ask... how much water are you drinking on a daily basis?

The bag says one hour before and immediately after training, and don't go over the dose... 😁

Two tablespoons. Should I scoop them full or level?

Man, don't stress out over the small stuff. What really matters is hitting that 28, 30, or 36 grams per serving... just grab two medium-sized scoops and call it a day.

Sorry, but you didn't actually mention what kind of athlete this 16-year-old kid even is...
Is he doing fitness, or maybe bodybuilding where he needs all that "mass" you mentioned?
You can't just give a teenager some blunt advice about nutrition being the most important thing when you don't even know who he is. If I'm not mistaken, the guy is into combat sports, and you can't advise him to eat like some casual gym rat who thinks he can become Arnold by crushing oatmeal and half a kilo of protein powder just to get abs and bigger arms. How do you know he wouldn't prefer something like a burger before training? Do you really think elite athletes eat exactly like bodybuilders? Every single sport has its own specific requirements, and menus are built around those needs. It’s not just about the different sports either—it's about the athletes themselves, since we're all built differently. An athlete's form isn't judged by how ripped or pumped up their muscles look, but by their overall physical readiness, which comes primarily from training, not from typical bodybuilding diets that only work for them because bodybuilding is a visual pursuit... if it's even considered a sport at all.
The kid is 16 and still growing, so he can probably eat pretty much anything, especially since he's active. Genetics will play its part, and he might never look exactly like the person he admires physically. He shouldn't obsess over aesthetics; he just needs to train, eat, and everything will fall into place eventually. Also, he should pick up a textbook and learn from actual professionals instead of reading T-Nation and other nonsense.
And believe it or not, even pizza can fit into an athlete's "proper diet."😉

We all know what healthy eating looks like, and that applies to everyone from infants to seniors... btw, maybe you should spend a little more time browsing T-Nation, you might actually learn something.

Look, kid, if you're gonna start supplementing, you might as well just go with some whey protein

ironorca19 said:Hey there!

So, I decided yesterday to finally start putting on some muscle mass...

I hit the gym this morning for about 45 minutes to an hour—not entirely sure on the timing—and right after my workout, I grabbed two bananas, a glass of milk, and a sandwich with cream cheese. I really wanted to whip up two or three eggs, but my mom was busy making lunch, so I didn't have a chance to cook them. I’ve never messed with protein powders before, but a buddy of mine is giving me a little bit to try tonight. His brother actually uses it for training kickboxing, so he’s happy to share. We’re planning on hitting the weights together and we'll be looking like the Hulk in less than a year xD... so, tell me, was that post-workout meal actually any good?

NO! You've got it all wrong. With that meal, you barely even hit one gram of protein, if that... Seriously, go do some research online. Bodybuilding forums and fitness sites are packed with articles and solid advice on how, what, where, why, and when... First, you really need to learn what muscle is actually made of and understand the roles of proteins, carbs, and fats.... And as for turning into "the Hulk"... with a diet and routine like that, it's going to be tough 😁

Jonathan James7 said:Honestly, whey isn't even that crucial, unless you're hitting it in the morning or right after a workout with some fruit...
Casein is what the real bodybuilders swear by, usually paired with tons of chicken breast...😁

Anyway, have you guys seen that documentary on YouTube about steroids? It turns out everyone is juicing...
Even those guys you see on magazine covers looking all pretty and ripped.
Some fitness trainers even admitted they started at fifteen.
Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted he used it too.
Pro athletes use it.

Jonathan James7 said:Twice a day... that adds up to 60 doses a month... which means 720 doses over the course of a year...

I completely forgot to add the acesulfame potassium...

They have a stevia-sweetened version of that whey, but you just can't find it anywhere in the States...

They add some potash and baking soda to help thin things out... otherwise, it would be such a nightmare to mix...
It’s exactly the same thing... you end up just pouring water everywhere and everything...

I order my whey and casein right here in the States, and honestly... nothing comes of it. It’s all useless...

Have you ever actually tasted pure casein without all that artificial sweetener and flavoring? I mean, really tasted it... You haven't. Because you can't even find it for sale here in the States...

I order everything from Amazon, and I always hunt specifically for those products that include certain additives... honestly, I just love those artificial little extras... aspartame tastes so good to me, I could probably eat it by itself... maybe just two spoonfuls right before bed...

It’s honestly kind of funny... you see these people acting like total experts on high-end art accessories, yet they're usually just sitting there with a cigar in one hand and a beer in the other, never actually doing anything active or even touching a hobby...

Jonathan James7 said:sucralose, aspartame, artificial colors, and flavors lurking in your favorite whey protein...
Cheers to that.

I've been sipping on aspartame and all sorts of artificial sweeteners for years now and honestly? I feel great... totally fine.
You're actually more likely to end up with diabetes from consuming too much "natural" sugar than you are from one packet of Stevia in your coffee or a scoop of whey with artificial sweeteners...

Elizabeth Chase44 said:Since I’m currently cutting fat while also ramping up my workouts, can I use whey protein as a meal replacement during the day? Sometimes with work, I just don't have time for a real, healthy meal... plus, obviously, I'll take it after training. My main concern is—I won't accidentally bulk up too much if I take it twice a day, right? 😁
If I’m reading this right, you need about 2g per kg for muscle growth, so two scoops shouldn't make me look huge overnight, right?

Don't worry, you aren't going to wake up looking like a bodybuilder! Whey isn't a total food replacement; it's really just a supplement to your diet. It'll be most effective if you grab it right after your workout...

Henry Doyle4 said:Hey everyone, I could really use some help here... I just picked this up today...Check out this latest find for anyone looking to level up their supplement game! I was browsing through some options online and stumbled upon this massive tub of Optimum Nutrition BCAA 3G. It’s a pretty substantial size at 2268g, which is great if you're serious about staying hydrated and recovering between sets... definitely worth a look if you want to keep those energy levels steady during intense sessions! I’ve been sticking to isolate so far, and honestly, everything has been top-tier... but once I switched over to the MVP, things went south fast. It feels more like a concentrate than anything else, doesn't it?... The taste is just revolting and way too sweet. 🙂🙂 Anyone else have experience with this? This is my first time trying whey from Optimum Nutrition, and honestly... it’s pretty terrible. I’m starting to wonder if I should have just gone with an isolate instead. They usually taste way more normal and aren't quite as sickly sweet... I was just browsing through some supplement options online today... found this listing for a 2kg tub of Optimum Nutrition... really looking at my current stack and thinking about making some changes... might be time to stock up on the essentials! Just looking for some firsthand experiences, please! xD

I really need some help here... please! 🙂

It’s all good, really. Don't let it get to you... just keep drinking your shakes and hitting the gym!

It’s all pretty much the same stuff, though I’ll always stick to the big names—you know, brands like Optimum Nutrition, Dymatize, Labrada, or Weider... but honestly, even that one should be fine. Once you're done with your workout, just toss in about two scoops of whey, maybe 30g, plus some 50g of dextrose (grape sugar)

and I want to do it at home, because my legs are basically toothpicks right now... I read somewhere that you have to eat protein since exercise alone won't cut it... and apparently eggs have the most... what kind of egg should I eat, hard-boiled or fried??? And should I be eating them before or after my workout?? 😕

So you decided this morning, did a tiny bit of movement, and then immediately jumped on Reddit to start a thread? Honestly, looking at your questions, I think your first step should probably just be a quick Google search... just to keep things simple for you, this should get you started...

slydriver52 said:You definitely won't find Optimum Nutrition for 41 bucks in Canada!🤦
Come on, give us the specifics. Tell us exactly what you ordered from bodybuilding.com, how it arrived without any customs fees or those "extra charges" you mentioned, and how it showed up in just two weeks... usually, it takes at least three.

Regarding whey sourced from Canada...

As for BB.com, I grabbed two tees, a caliper for tracking body fat, a shaker, and some push-up bars... they even threw in a free NO-xploda scoop for good measure!

So, I paid with my credit card on May 4th, and it just landed at my doorstep today with absolutely zero extra fees...🤷

Edit: To be more specific about the BB.com order, the total was exactly $42.95 plus the slow shipping—not sure of the exact amount, maybe between $10 and $15. They estimated 8 to 20 days, and mine actually arrived in 15 days!

Does that answer your question? 🙂

About two weeks ago, I picked up a few things from bodybuilding.com in the USA for roughly $40, and they just showed up today without any extra fees or surprises

Yesterday, I pulled the trigger on some Optimum Nutrition Gold Whey (about 5 lbs) for $45 plus $10 shipping from a shop over in Canada. I'll let you guys know when it arrives...
