Upgrading my old PC for gaming in Desktops ·
Ethan Davis54 said:Hey everyone,
I've been following this interesting thread. I'm actually facing the same dilemma right now—whether to squeeze more life out of my current rig or just bite the bullet and buy something new.

My current setup is about 7 years old. It's an older gaming build, if I recall correctly.
MB: ASUS P5QPL-AM (socket 775, G41 chipset)
proc: core2duo E7300 (2.66)
4 gb RAM
Graf: Nvidia GT240 (it's struggling, though it still runs quite a few things)
Case with built-in power supply.

The motherboard could probably handle a used Quad core if I found one that fits.
I'd also grab another 4 GB of RAM.
Graf: maybe a GT450, though I'm not sure if I can go higher.
Power supply—not sure if it could handle a better card, but likely yes, though the GPU would be the bottleneck.

Is it worth dropping $100$500 on this upgrade, or should I just sell it for parts and put together a new PC in the $3500$1333 range that could last me several more years?

Thanks a lot!

Best,

Sell it for parts!

With that kind of budget, you could just upgrade the graphics card.

For about $75, this is a pretty solid power supply.

Christian Torres3 said:Fine, for $150$67 they could definitely grab something better, but what exactly makes this unit so bad? The VS Series PSUs are just Corsair's entry level line. They're all five-star rated, so where's the proof? Where are the users actually complaining about bad experiences?

It’s those cheap Chinese capacitors, and that's the whole issue. The claim about them using Japanese parts is a lie, and besides, that link you sent is for the VX, which is a completely different story.

I wouldn't dream of putting a Corsair VS power supply in a build worth about $2667.

Kenneth Green2 said:I'm looking to pick up a computer, but my budget is pretty tight.$800So, what do you all think about picking up a used PC? $567
I still have an old i5 3350p lying around in a drawer somewhere. It’s definitely a relic by today's standards.
8 GB of RAM.
I'm looking at a 1 TB hard drive.
Looking for an LGA 1155 motherboard.
I'm looking for some info on the NVIDIA GeForce with 1GB of DDR5.
I'm thinking about picking up a better graphics card in maybe a month or two, probably around the $800 range.$300 ?

It's worth it. $667 Buy it right away.

In that case, the Intel Core i5 with EVGA Power Supply and the PowerColor Radeon would be the best way to go.

There’s a 15W difference here. ^^

Guru3D shows about 143 w

The gap is 51 w on this one

crimsonstag84 said:I’m guessing you’re running a Windows Basic series build, which isn't exactly top-tier, but it should be plenty since the GPU draws a maximum of 130W. Total power draw will likely stay under 300W.

The GPU hits 150W max while the GTX 950 pulls 90W, leaving a 60W gap.

crimsonstag84 said:It won't work... without a GPU, a setup like this pulls about 80W at idle and 150W under load, but if you overclock to 4.7GHz, that jumps to 220W (according to AnandTech and Guru3D). Once you add a graphics card, you're looking at a ~350W peak. Honestly, Intel Core i7 chips are some of the most efficient ones Intel has ever made.

Just throw in 16GB of DDR3, two HDDs, two SSDs, and a few fans, and you'll easily clear 400W at peak. Plus, that power supply is definitely lower quality than a Corsair 500 w.

If they’re running an Intel Core i7 or have a decent graphics card, the load is definitely going to top 400 watts. Honestly, for a high-end build like that, I’d suggest picking up a better power supply.

Intel Core i3 with ASUS motherboard
mb Gigabyte GA-H81M-S2V
ram ddr3 8gb
ssd Samsung 870 EVO SSD 240gb with a 60-month warranty
kućište Corsair nova black
napajanje super flower 350w

this should cost about $753 on CNN.com

for basic office work, you don't need anything more expensive; spending extra on anything above an i3 is just throwing money away.

Dennis Ruiz3 said:Thanks for the comparison, those are some solid tips. I’ll check all my parts on Newegg and then maybe look at Micro Center. I hadn't even heard of that shop before.

If you're buying within the States, don't bother asking for a tax refund—just buy it and bring it across. If they don't catch you, you're fine, but if they do, you'll be hit with customs penalties, plus duty and sales tax, which could total around 35%. If you try to claim a tax refund at the border, you'll automatically end up on the radar for customs in Canada, and they might even take you to court for a violation, so just be careful...
In my opinion, you'll get the best deal by mixing and matching on eBay or Craigslist. You can find an i5 4460 for $433 or 202 miles brand new with a 3-year warranty; if you search online, you can find everything at great prices.

Timothy Kim60 said:Cases like the Fractal R4 or Define series, for example. As for the PSU, that’ll really just depend on what’s available and what you're willing to spend when the time comes (same goes for the case), but regardless of the brand, you'll definitely get something better than a VS model. If you have a higher budget, you'd look at things like a Fortron Aurum, Antec TruePower Classic, Fractal Edison, Corsair RM, Super Flower Leadex, or an EVGA G2...

And what's someone not going to like about Seasonic...

If you aren't worried about power consumption, the R9 380x is actually going to perform better than the GTX 960 for gaming.
