Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
Jeffrey Peterson said:I need a quick answer here! I'm looking at putting a power supply in a build with a Pentium, an ASUS card, and a 160GB HDD, but the 12V rail only provides 5A. The CPU and GPU aren't heavy hitters, but that rail tops out at 60W. If the CPU pulls 35W and the GPU pulls about the same, plus the HDD... should I just try it and see if it works? What's the worst-case scenario? Is there a risk of things burning out, or will the PC just fail to boot? This PSU is currently running in a system with an AM2 motherboard—I'm not even sure which CPU is in there, but with the 160GB HDD, it runs perfectly fine. (I'll check the specific CPU later and let you know)

Give it a shot; it won't cost you much to find out.🤣

bluecanyon25 said:crimsonstag84, thanks for getting back to me. Just to clarify, I'm not really a hardcore gamer. I don't play anything super demanding for hours on end. I just need something reliable enough to handle an hour or two of PES or something similar. This setup seems a bit overkill for my needs, especially given what fadedorca66 mentioned about my processor. 🙂

Best Buy has a good option for your build for only $180.

Jeffrey Peterson said:I was curious about the integrated graphics on my new motherboard... I hopped onto a gaming forum to compare them, and apparently, this one is 18% more powerful!😲 Now, that's what the site claims, but does it actually hold up in real-world use? I'm running an Asus EN210 512MB with Intel GMA X4500 integrated on an Asus P5G41T-M LX3 board.🍿

It's not related.
Upgrading my RAM: What should I buy? in Desktops ·
graniteharbor85 said:First off, this is just used gear, so there's room to haggle $17 if you know how to negotiate, especially since we're talking about DDR2.

Secondly, if he’d put in a little more effort, he could have posted his entire build and asked which RAM we actually recommend. Then we'd really know—he probably has some ancient Intel e2xxx, Celeron, or Pentium chip. Instead of blowing $133 on 4GB of RAM, he’d be better off selling the processor, the motherboard, and that leftover 1GB of RAM, then taking those $133 plus the cash from the sale to grab a new G530 + H61 combo with 4GB of DDR3.

Thirdly, do you honestly think he's going to stick with this exact same setup for another three years?

Yeah, my computer gets slow sometimes, but hopefully adding new RAM will fix it.
I'm running Windows 7, so it should work fine enough.
After hearing that, I bet he'll be riding this setup for five years before he even thinks about an upgrade.

It’s honestly tough to find 🙂

if you want to save some $40 since it doesn't have a 36-month warranty.

graniteharbor85 said:It’s honestly a waste of $133 money to pay full price for DDR2 when DDR3 is $50 out there; just grab some used DDR2 sticks and save your cash. As for whether it actually speeds up your PC, that really depends on your whole setup, but once you get the RAM, make sure you install a 64-bit version of Windows.

Camera recommendation ()

Just find him some cheap, used 2x2 GB DDR2 modules instead.

Does it have 2 x 16 amps on the 12v rail, or maybe 20 amps?

With 4GB, you're going to see speeds about four times faster.

What about the power supply?

With that setup, you're better off going with this

It uses newer tech and stays under $333.

Benjamin King2 said:The Intel Core i5 2500 doesn't actually pull that much power; mine sits at about 80W even when I'm pushing it to 4.6 GHz under full load.

jonnyguru test XFX 450 w
Wild +12V regulation here—it actually spiked under load and even drifted out of spec during crossloading.
A genuine Seasonic unit would be a much better bet, and the price is pretty much what you're looking at anyway$183.

But the Intel Core i5 2500 needs plenty of power if you're planning on overclocking.
It's easily one of the top-tier power supplies out there. Plus, it's currently on sale $183

on an ASRock z68 extreme gen3
with a sapphire hd 7850
a 750GB WD Green HDD
a 60 GB Mushkin SSD
in a CM 692 advanced x2 kkn5 case
using 2x4 GB Skill memory
and an LG GH24

I'm looking for a power supply up to $183. Preferably something quiet. Suggestions from Newegg, Micro Center, or Amazon would be great. Thanks.

That's a solid graphics card.

They offer a five-year warranty on this, which says a lot about the quality of the power supply.

Joshua Ramos14 said:I'm hoping it can handle the GPU, since the specs list 450W as the requirement... I wouldn't want it running right at the limit or struggling or anything like that.

Sent by Samsung Galaxy S user!

Your setup pulls about 300 watts max, and that NVIDIA GTX 450 power supply has an 80+ Bronze rating, delivering over 400 watts on the 12V rail. This PSU actually handles much more than your current card needs.

the PSU is getting pretty loud, and Engadget already recommended I swap it out ASAP 🙂)

If you want the best bang for your buck, grab the XFX 450W. Trust me, it's the best one out of everything they're offering.

casualfox22 said:I really need some quick help here... I have a GIGAtech 450 w 24 power supply, and I'm wondering if it's too weak to run an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX 768 mb. The rest of my build is an i3 with 4 GB of G Skill RAM.

You can't even find this power supply online, which pretty much tells you everything you need to know. Take a look at the label on the unit and check the amperage on the 12V rail; you should be seeing at least 25A or more. My advice? Don't risk it with that power supply.

casualfox22 said:I have a quick question. I just ordered an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768 MB, and I was wondering if I made the right call. How does it handle games like Battlefield 3??

It came out back in 2006. That's quite a while ago. Is it still overclockable?
