Bank account frozen: What should I do? in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Drew Bishop22 said:The thing is, everyone just ignores that kind of advice, I guess. And then they have the nerve to act all offended or genuinely shocked when someone actually comes knocking three or four years later demanding the money back? It’s honestly unbelievable... People act like Goldman Sachs is this big, terrifying monster that just freezes your bank accounts out of nowhere. If someone actually had an outstanding debt—say, for a cell phone bill—and just reached out to the law firm handling the case, they probably could have worked out a payment plan. I know plenty of people who were actually quite reasonable about it and even agreed to let them pay as little as $33 a month.

That’s what I call irresponsible behavior.

I'm currently out of work and my accounts at Bank of America and Chase are both frozen (totaling about $13333). Does anyone know if I can just open an account at a different bank to receive some payments? Also, would Bank of America or Chase be able to grab funds from that new account if I manage to set one up?
Thanks..

To make this work, you’ll need to file a claim with the IRS so they can notify your bank to set up a protected account. This specific type of account is designed to hold funds that are legally exempt from garnishment.

Oh, it's absolutely worth it! If it weren't beneficial, Microsoft wouldn't even bother developing it!

Right now, I’m sitting at the unemployment office collecting my benefits.
And yet, the folks over at the Department of the Treasury decided to freeze my account—which, if you actually bother to read the law, they aren't even supposed to do while I'm registered with the IRS.

Is anyone else dealing with these kinds of bureaucrats or having run-ins with the Department of the Treasury?

Thanks,

I think you might have misunderstood how this works. Wage garnishment is definitely legal. Even if you're unemployed, you still have an obligation to report any income that is legally exempt from garnishment to the IRS. That way, they can instruct your bank to set up a protected account specifically for your unemployment checks.

So, I’ve got this student checking account at Chase, but I haven't been a student for over a year now. Every time I walk into the branch, the staff asks if I want to switch to a standard account, and every single time, I just end up grabbing a handful of flyers like I actually need to sit down and weigh my options. Recently, a friend of mine who works over at Chase told me I should probably just get it sorted, because apparently, Chase has the right to freeze my account just to force my hand on the matter. Is that actually true? Can they really pull a move like that? I'm not even overdrawn or anything, so it feels a bit heavy-handed.

Think of an account package like an optional add-on service from the bank; since it's an extra feature rather than the core account itself, they can't just lock you out of your money because of it. The only way they'd really have an issue is if there weren't enough funds in the account to cover the specific fees for that service—it sounds like that might be what's happening here.

Honestly, using E-zabu is such a headache because you have to manually input absolutely everything!

What makes one a better bet than the others?

Bank of America

Think of AHCI as the high-speed lane for your data. You enable it right in the BIOS settings—it's the controller that lets those SATA drives really stretch their legs and run at full speed. Just a heads-up though, you’ve got to flip that switch before you start the Windows installation!

So, about that 1TB drive of yours... is it a Samsung, by any chance?

I'm hitting a snag while trying to install Windows 7. When I run the setup from my Windows XP interface, it gets right up to 93% and then hits me with this error:

Windows cannot copy files required for installation. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070001

Any advice? I heard running a check disk might help, but I already tried that and it didn't do much.

Just a heads up, the OS isn't official—a buddy gave it to me, and he had no trouble installing it.

Thanks in advance!

The installation disc itself is an original, but using it without a license is definitely piracy!

Maybe try burning the files onto a different DVD? What kind of DVD drive are you working with?

It takes about 5 minutes before the system is actually usable, whereas back when I was running the 32-bit version, everything would snap into place in just a few seconds. Why on earth is it booting so slowly now? What could be causing this headache?

velvetmason2 said:Wait, where did you find that? It clearly states that if you aren't running Windows 7 SP1, the system will need to install extra components for Internet Explorer 9, which then requires a reboot. But if you're already on Windows 7 SP1, those pieces are already baked in, so you can get Internet Explorer 9 installed without having to restart your whole machine.

Don't sweat it—it'll come pre-packaged with SP1!

I really think we should give this a shot! It feels like one of those moments where taking a leap of faith could lead to something truly great. Let's see where this goes! kaže:
If you can believe it! SourceJust a quick heads-up for anyone wondering: you don't actually need Windows 7 service pack 1 to run Internet Explorer 9!

Will you need Windows 7 service pack 1 once Microsoft finally drops Internet Explorer 9?

Actually, it’s pretty straightforward! Internet Explorer 9 is compatible with both Windows 7 RTM and Windows 7 with service pack 1. Think of it like upgrading a car's engine. If you're starting with the base Windows 7 RTM model, installing Internet Explorer 9 is like adding those extra performance parts right then and there—it bundles everything you need into one go. However, if you’ve already upgraded to Windows 7 SP1, it’s like having those high-performance parts pre-installed under the hood! Since all those necessary components are already sitting there waiting for you, Internet Explorer 9 just plugs right in without needing to add anything new. Because of that, you won't even need to deal with a pesky system reboot if you're running Windows 7 SP1. It's a much smoother ride!

Nobody is actually saying that Internet Explorer 9 requires SP1 to work—it’s just that Internet Explorer 9 is going to be bundled right along with SP1!

Jonathan Morris40 said:Hey everyone! It’s been a minute since I’ve hung out here. Honestly, I haven't had much time to keep up with this thread, and it looks like things have moved along quite a bit since my last visit... I remember seeing some buzz about the first SP1 coming out within a week. What's the actual status on that? Has it officially dropped yet? I’m wondering if my Windows already updated itself without me even noticing! 😬

A little more intel would be awesome. What specific issues is the SP tackling? And why did they push it out just a week later? I'd really appreciate any info you guys can share. Cheers to all you good people! 👍

The RC is out now, with the official release slated for early 2011. On top of all the standard updates, security patches, and whatnot, the biggest headline is definitely going to be Internet Explorer 9!

it might be better to just swap it out

In that case, your CD/DVD drive is likely the culprit! You should definitely file a return claim.

Michael Alvarez8 said:I tried everything you suggested, but still nothing is working.

Hold on a second—did you actually install Windows 7 yourself, or was it already pre-loaded on there? Also, was your CD/DVD drive working properly before this started happening?

If I remove them, do I just hit install?

Yep! Just fire it up and keep clicking "next" until you see that "finish" button. And hey, if it asks you to reboot, go ahead and let it do its thing!

In that case, just head over to that link above, pick out your specific model and OS, and grab the VGA driver! Make sure you've got all the other necessary drivers installed too... by the way, buddy, what's the plan with the BIOS?

But here's the kicker: no matter what kind of disc I pop in—CD, DVD, Blu-ray, you name it—absolutely nothing happens. When I head over to My Computer, the E: drive and G: drive just sit there staring at me with an "insert disc" message.

Have you gone ahead and installed those AMD/ATI drivers yet?
