I don't have a single unread message because nobody sent me a PM I hadn't already opened before the forum crashed 😛
All those messages from before the crash are just placeholders at this point... that's why the inbox counts look accurate even though you can't actually access them 😛 whether they were read or unread 😛
Maybe things will settle down eventually, but it takes time...
Oh, and one more thing—keeping links and phone numbers stored in Washington, D.C. isn't exactly a brilliant move 😁 what exactly do you think a hard drive is for? 😁
mistypanther said:Oh, it happened alright. I made such a massive scene about it back then. I told them if they sent me, I’d just climb on stage and sing old-school country ballads instead of playing my instrument. I even threatened to quit music entirely—good grief, I was a total drama king🤣 😁
Barking dogs... 😳 😁
Would you actually have done that? 😁 😁
What, so even bribing you with ice cream didn't work? 🤣
Look, you’ve got it wrong 😳 public speaking can actually help you in a dozen different ways 😳
I don't get how they didn't force you into it 😁 It's not really a choice when your professor is pushing you and the senior partners are encouraging it 😁
See, my supervisor (and the rest of us on rotation) never sent me to any competitions, even though I can say with some confidence everyone agreed I was the best in my class and beyond 😬 .. and that's where the interest just died out.. because under a different professor, everyone else was still getting opportunities for awards and credits... it's a shame
Sure, except for the kid who actually puts in the work. And like I said, why shouldn't they try? If they see they have a knack for it, they'll want to be the best, right? The key is having a teacher who actually knows how to coach them and pushes them toward competitions and all that stuff.
Like anything else, you have to find a middle ground. Extremism is out. 🙂
I'm not just talking about people who didn't finish school... you can be highly educated without having the credentials; in fact, 😳 everything is subjective 😁 (just like you can be completely ignorant even after finishing middle school, high school, or college, right 😉 ) so it really all comes down to 🙂
So, what kind of skill or knowledge can actually be useless?
Trust me, you’ll make things a lot easier just by not struggling with basic notes or keeping time 😬 😉 ... not to mention developing better listening habits than... people without any musical training. Then there's exposure to other instruments during school, which you can just chalk up to general culture.
If the kid is talented—which is the most important part, since they'll figure out their own level eventually—and the teacher is solid, they'll likely stick with it. If they decide they hate it later, so be it, but that knowledge will always come in handy.
Terry Turner842 said:We live in an apartment building. It’s 10 PM right now, and there’s no way anyone is going to let you play anything except maybe a classical guitar. Conclusion: You actually have to check with the neighbors to see what they can tolerate.🙂
Forget the neighbors...
Obviously, your kid isn't going to be playing music at 10 at night...
Afternoons and early evenings? Sure, let them play whatever they want.
That’s how I handled it, and I never had a single issue. In fact, my younger neighbor downstairs was clearly listening to me 😬 because she ended up enrolling in music school—playing the exact same instrument as me, of course.😬:egotrip:
