A new wave in Music ·
Come back, honey—everything's forgiven 🙂
Album of the week in Music ·
I’d vote for The Doors, but I think at least one more album deserves a spot on this week's listening list—so I set up the poll based on that. My main pick is Calexico (first time listening to them and they’re honestly great), though I wouldn't mind if Primal Scream ended up winning too, since that album really deserves its own theme. I guess I'll throw a vote toward the Pixies as well; they've never been my thing, but I see people around here who really dig them.

Gerald Jackson48 said:When I see someone pass up their own suggestion just to vote for someone else's—well, that tells me a few things. Either they’re absolutely certain their original pick is going to win anyway, or maybe they stumbled onto something even better than what they initially proposed. It definitely makes me second-guess my own take, too—especially if I don't already know the artist or the album very well.

Basically—I feel like if you're the one suggesting an album, you should actually be willing to stand behind it. I guess you should really own your picks.

Well, you're kind of making my point for me just by asking that. I mean—why would I even suggest an album if I didn't stand behind it? It goes without saying, really—it's all part of the same thing, I guess. 🤷

As for the first part of that post—it doesn't really apply to me. I guess I'm just an outlier in this case. 😁

Lisa Davis46 said:I think this voting system has actually worked out pretty well. If someone just wants to vote for one album, they’re free to do that. Also—I don't really see the issue with having three albums tied, especially this week... all three topics have great intros. 🙂 Plus, they're already getting plenty of eyes on them, considering how much the root gets read overall.

The other thing is we're missing a solid number of voters. It would definitely be better if we regularly had 15–20 people participating, like in a few previous rounds, rather than peaking at maybe 10. Then again, the specific album choice isn't even the main point—it's more about what our friend over there keeps mentioning, which is actually getting people to join the discussions within the individual threads. 🙂

I know for a fact that plenty of people are reading us, but they aren't voting or posting anything. Why that is, or how we change it... I don't know. I guess Amanda Robinson4 and I might try to come up with something.

It's not exactly a secret, since everyone can see the view counts on every thread. Unless those views mean something else entirely? Maybe I'm just tech-illiterate, but I doubt I'm *that* 🙂

I agree that the scoring criteria is totally fine. The only thing that felt a bit off to me was voting for your own albums, since that didn't seem to make much sense. But if nobody else sees an issue with it, I guess I'll just go along with the majority.

Dennis Hall41 said:If we all just vote for one album each, you'll end up with five albums getting one vote—or zero—and maybe four or five getting two. I can't really commit to listening to five different albums every single week... I don't just listen to whatever gets suggested here on the forum.
And honestly, out of ten things I suggest, I’ll probably vote for my own stuff eight or nine times. Not because I need to win, but because my picks are almost always either the best or in the top three.
Man, I know I'm biased toward certain genres, but I can't help it. There's basically no chance I'm voting for experimental, cacophonous, jazz, or most of those 80s choices—so that pretty much clears out half of the suggestions we've had so far.

But isn't every single one of his suggestions essentially the "best" one? If he didn't think that was the case, he wouldn't be suggesting the album in the first place, right?😁

That's actually why I avoid voting for my own albums—I figure I'm already an automatic vote for them the moment I suggest them. It's really up to you guys if you want to give him your vote or not.

PS, I agree with the rest of what was said.👍

All I’m going to say is—keep your ears open and just soak in everything

...just 18 karats of pure disappointment...

I noticed the tracklist on that link is all messed up—they've got songs listed that don't even belong to the album (it's like Gluperd is just wandering around aimlessly, so what, sloboda...) —but if we end up winning, we can at least use this page to listen to everything https://www.dailymotion.com/AZRADAILYMOTION/videos

Maybe Vancha can grab me a drink to cheer me up today. I was actually planning on checking out Azra either this week or next—but since you suggested it, I guess I'll cross them off my list. I'm definitely going to swing by sometime this week, though—I haven't slept a wink since yesterday and I'll probably be a mess for the next few days...

Here’s something that fits this gloomy day perfectly.

The Highwaymen—or just four legends coming together—was that iconic American country supergroup featuring Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. They played together from '85 through '95, putting out three albums during that run. We could probably talk about them in a different thread, but for this one, I figured I'd share this live set from Nassau Coliseum. You can catch some of their most famous songs, along with a few tracks they actually wrote specifically for the group. It's tough to pick the absolute best since there are so many good ones, but lately, I've been leaning heavily on "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and "Loving Her Was Easier"—though I'm sure everyone listening will find their own favorites. There's plenty of variety here.

Looks like I’ll have to start voting for my own albums from now on—just so I don't end up one vote short. 😁

Nega, I guess I might be one of the few people who never really felt like Rosalita was an absolute knockout. It’s far from a bad track, but on this specific album, I think Incident, Sandy, and NYC Serenade actually hit harder—and honestly, the rest of the songs hold their own against it too.

I know you’d probably suggest All Hail West Texas or Tunnel of Love instead, but I find this one interesting because it's one of the early ones—the second album in the sequence—so it feels like a great way to get an introduction to his musical world. It’s a pretty underrated record, in my opinion, and I don't think it falls short of his best work from that era at all. Maybe I'll write up a proper review of it sometime and explain why I think it's worth a listen.

Bruce Springsteen - The Rolling Stones, The E Street Band (1973)

Tracklist:

1. The E Street Shuffle
2. 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
3. Kitty's Back
4. Wild Billy's Circus Story
5. Incident on 6th Avenue
6. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
7. New York City Serenade

I notice this thread is looking pretty thin on suggestions—I guess I'm just out of inspiration for anything else right now. 🙂

Jason Mendoza said:Honestly, The Beatles are driving me absolutely crazy lately—it’s getting ridiculous. Someone else mentioned Radiohead earlier, and don't even get me started on that whole indie rock wave from the 2000s. Just... ugh.

I think we should start a thread where we can talk about music we absolutely hate—but let's try to keep it civil so nobody takes it personally. 😁

Maybe there's something to this. styleWhat's even worse—they’re actually out there commenting on it too. 😁

Lisa Davis46 said:I’m thinking along the same lines—I honestly don't know how to wrap my head around this whole Radiohead thing.
But I probably shouldn't push it... wouldn't want my colleague mimma to start hating me. 😁

And '69... man, that year was something else. Captain should be right up there at the top, just like Nick Drake.

Not being subjective at all 😁

Regarding '69, you guys pretty much covered it, though I’d just add that Woodstock happened that year too. So, if you ask me, maybe it was actually the most significant year in the history of rock.

I’m honestly not sure how to make sense of a list where Radiohead manages to land three different albums in the top 20...

I mean, I’m not even looking at this "personal" one for the 69th spot. King Crimson is sitting at number 8, Nick Drake is down at 26—though that's a different record—and even Captain is at 24. 🙂

To me, Annie feels like this sort of blend of Bowie and Billy Idol—it’s in her posture, her vibe, even that look she gives 🙂 though, I guess, she’s still entirely her own person, so there's no confusion there. She's definitely one of my favorite female vocalists, and honestly, just one of my favorite personalities in music overall.

I was just revisiting this Bowie show—it was recorded back in 1997 at Madison Square Garden for his 50th birthday. The guest list was pretty wild... he had Grohl and the Foo Fighters, Robert Smith from The Cure, Sonic Youth, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, and even Lou Reed showed up to perform as "King of New York," as the birthday boy introduced him.

Maybe the setlist isn't the most representative of his whole career—if I recall correctly, this was part of the Earthling tour, so there's a good amount of material from that specific era—but personally, I’d much rather hear some deeper cuts than just a greatest hits package. Don't get me wrong, they played the big hits too, but I have to mention how incredible "Under Pressure" sounded. Freddie did such a great job stepping in for Bowie's regular bassist, Gail Ann Dorsey. And honestly, the lady on drums really nailed it, too. 😍

I guess Zappa is one of those artists I just can't quite wrap my head around—even though there's this huge part of me that really wants to love him. And honestly, that recent album of the week you suggested? It was mostly unlistenable to me, except for maybe two tracks (I think they were Night School and Etienne).

Since I'm already here, I figured I'd drop this concert from an interesting lady I only recently discovered. I'm still finding my way through her discography, and I stumbled upon this live set at the Capitol Theatre. Regardless of her, I've noticed there are tons of great shows coming out of that venue, so I'll probably keep sharing interesting links whenever I run into them. The video quality is a bit rough in some spots, but I kind of find that adds to the romance of it. If you haven't given her a listen yet, maybe give her a chance—you might actually dig it (and maybe some others will too).

Well, I guess I was at least on the right track 😁
