Look, I'm just looking for a general practitioner in the Brooklyn area or a local Community Health Center... nothing fancy. Just a normal, decent doctor who isn't some "specialist" type, as long as they're actually accepting new patients. And please, I want someone who doesn't come with a nurse who storms out of the office looking absolutely livid the second you knock on the door—acting like you personally insulted her entire family just because you had the nerve to ask if they're taking new patients.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Or better yet, who should I stay far away from?

The cause isn't just one single thing, but it’s been proven that they stem from hyperkinetic phonation—which is basically just fancy talk for straining your voice too hard—in women and children who talk way too much or too loud. Since these nodules form right at the center of the vocal folds (that junction between the front and middle sections), they hit the exact spot that vibrates with the highest amplitude during speech. So, when someone is overworking their voice, that mechanical stress causes tissue damage, leading to swollen, edematous protrusions along the edge. Most of the time, these nodules come from long-term voice abuse; you see them frequently in women whose careers depend entirely on their voices, or in kids who dominate every conversation, and sometimes even in kids with hyperkinetic syndromes. That said, nodules can also pop up suddenly after an acute bout of vocal strain, especially if it's paired with something like acute laryngitis or a viral upper respiratory infection. In those early stages, they might be barely noticeable and soft, often called "pre-nodules." Over time, they can stay soft and swollen or turn hard and fibrotic. Even though we're talking about tiny growths—roughly the size of a pinhead—the hoarseness can be massive. After surgery, voice therapy is non-negotiable to fix the underlying way the person produces sound, otherwise, the nodules will just come right back. They recur so often precisely because the way someone speaks is a deeply ingrained habit, whether it's a personality trait or a professional necessity. On the bright side, they tend to clear up on their own in boys going through puberty, whereas in girls, they often persist past puberty, which can unfortunately limit their future career options.
