Movie theater pauses: Yay or nay? in Movies ·
Even if the numbers were higher, I doubt authoritative agencies would even blink..
Miami Vice in Movies ·
Back in the day, when we were just kids running around the Midwest stealing snacks from the pantry😁, we used to watch Miami Vice. Man, what a rush seeing Don Johnson—who apparently starred in adult films before this, according to 😁—acting in a show that had everything a kid growing up here could dream of. The colors... I mean, those neon shades were probably the brightest things ever captured on film. Espadrilles, loafers, yellow, green, red, white (not that I care about the color of the words 😬)... Anyway, years have passed. A lot has changed. In the grand scheme of things, besides the fact that the USSR is gone, the biggest loss is that there aren't any more Don Johnsons to watch. But we do have Michael Mann, who finally followed through on his threat and actually made a movie. Honestly, if it weren't for him, I don't think anyone would have even bothered making this. To be clear, the movie lacks enough action for a blockbuster, doesn't have enough humor to be fun, and the script is so thin my neighbor Pero could probably write something better while changing a tire. Plus, it carries this massive weight of being part of a flood of crime shows since the eighties, which makes it feel oh so passe... but I don't really care 😵... because having Michael Mann involved makes up for it. His shots are so good that even when nothing intelligent is happening on screen, you still find something to admire. My god, even a boring boat ride looks great. Even in HD, his work makes sense. I can't shake the feeling that half the movie is just an excuse to show off beautiful cinematography... but hey, I can't complain. You either get sucked into Mann's noir world or you don't. Personally, I had no clue what was going on and didn't care; I just enjoyed the ride😁..
'Noir in Florida'... turns out it's possible
Oh yeah, did I mention 😍...
Volver (I'm Coming Back) in Movies ·
Well, like the title says I’M RETURRRNING TO YOUUU uhm... wow, this place sucks...😁😁 ...anyway... Pedro managed to push through to his 16th feature, and here he is, coming home—which is really just a way of saying he's circling back. He’s looking at family photos, flipping through albums, walking the streets of his hometown while it pours rain outside... it’s heavy. When you start heading back, it usually means you’ve reached some kind of end. I hope it doesn't actually feel that way, because it would be a shame if that's all we ever get from Pedro. Why is he returning? We've heard it a thousand times... it's all there. Carmen Maura shows up before everyone else 😍... though it's honestly depressing to see how much she's aged. It feels like twenty years have passed since 'What have I done?' ...returning to the small town after digging just beneath the surface of the big city... women, women, women... women in high heels... stacks of photos... tons of color... heavy production... a perfect soundtrack... even a musical interlude in that 'Habl...' style... and Penelope just steals the spotlight from everyone else, even when she's just washing dishes in a sink... she covers up most of the flaws and misses. To me, it feels like a much calmer Volver... the meta-film stunts are mostly gone (okay, maybe a little), the wild plot twists, and honestly, none of that madness from his brilliant early era. It was smart of Pedro to make a simple movie... so, what can you even say? Everything is brilliant... but I can't hide my total sadness about it <--emo moment 😁😁😁 ...what's missing is substance... the jelly in the donut, the diesel in the truck, the bill at the Metropolitan Opera... I want emotions... actual chemistry between these women... but let's not tear Pedro apart just because of an old folk song

I wouldn't be surprised if they start charging a fee just to look at the menu.
If you want to watch this show, you’re gonna need to buy some popcorn.
Popcorn and a large Pepsi... if the movie drags on, you might even have to sit through another commercial. 😬

intermission at the AMC🙂 ...
at least while we still have any actual options... before we end up begrudgingly paying for a massive Pepsi and popcorn from $33 😢

I watched Killers 😵 😁

blueranger12 said:Based on what I read, pauses are for kids and people who watch garbage movies. Good movies for smart people don't need them. Now the government has to decide if they want to support children and bad moviegoers, or actual intelligent adults. I think the choice is pretty obvious.

Though apparently, the administration is more into the opera than the cinema these days 😁
...
but haven't you noticed that AMC has the most comfortable seats... oh yeah, definitely just for your comfort...

nimblemarlin17 said:Given the garbage they’re pumping out in theaters these days, what kind of "cinematic experience" are we even talking about? Honestly, an intermission is great just so I can grab a bathroom break and chat with whoever I'm sitting next to.

So, based on that, it sounds like you're intentionally paying to watch something you already know is going to suck... why bother?

sanjana said:I actually dig the commercial breaks and wish they'd bring them back. I've gotten so used to movies having ads that even those channels without commercials feel exhausting—it's impossible to grab a glass of water without missing half the plot.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

Brooklyn said:Intermissions at the Brooklyn theater—what an absolute concept 🤣 🤣
Halfway through the movie, they call for a break, and nobody moves. Everyone just sits there with their legs crossed. It takes about three or four minutes before the guys in sweatpants start shuffling out, then five minutes later, the folks in jeans finally follow suit 😁

🤣 Let’s be real, an intermission at the Brooklyn theater would actually be useful... just gives people a chance to hit the restroom 😬
...
but ever since they started shoving those annoying commercials in front of us at the cinema, who even cares?

blueranger12 said:It happened to me during Lothar and King Kong. Honestly, I even cursed. They really should put a warning before the movie starts. Instead, they just blast the lights right in the middle of the film while I'm curled up in a recliner, crying like a toddler.

🤣 ..same here... I was watching a movie in Brooklyn when...
whatever, it doesn't matter 😬

Patrick Lee29 said:I almost skipped seeing Pirate in the Caribbean because they warned me this pathetic 2-hour and 40-minute movie includes a 15-minute intermission. Add in another 15 minutes of absolute garbage commercials, and you're stuck in a seat for over three hours.

Are you actually serious right now??...Good grief, what happened here...it's like watching local news on a massive cinema screen.🤮

...I don't even know where to start... maybe at the beginning, when a failed hero recites prayers from the Quran while cruising through a total New York City vibe, with streets that look like veins in some massive organism... it's a tragicomic mess of the American system (like during those military exercises where they're still being hit by Russians 🙄)... the sheer scale of this hellish idea is massive. It’s a brilliant parable about an airplane vanishing from radar and becoming non-existent until it hits CNN... or those final scenes where everyone is praying for the same thing at once... some in English, others in Arabic... you have to wonder if even the powers above were just as confused as we were. Greengrass has an eye for detail and knows exactly how much to give you; he understands that seeing those towers flickering in the background through a window is more unsettling than the actual fireballs of judgment day. Maybe he could have delayed the climax a bit—pushed it to the three-quarter mark instead of halfway through—but there's no use splitting hairs now. Great film regardless...

🤣 and you're acting like he's some kind of gold standard...

Gerald Rivera60 said:I guess those movies peddling that "eternal soulmate" and "love conquers all" crap are pretty trashy. But then again, people keep watching them because they’ve been brainwashed by every other social institution to think that way.
The whole idea that love is the ultimate goal of human existence is shoved into about 80% of movies just to distract everyone from actual issues, like wealth redistribution and stuff—not that I want to get too political here in the "Movies" subforum.
I'm not saying love isn't important, but it needs to be put in its proper place.

And that's point number one 😁... honestly, I don't think it's even about the content, it's more about how that "love" is packaged. The kind of love these movies talk about is something people have only ever actually seen on screen.😁
Gerald Rivera60 said:Someone once pointed out that when Hollywood tones down violence in action movies to make them kid-friendly, it actually does more damage than realistic films. It makes all that chaos look way too easy.
(can't quite remember who wrote it)
... interesting point.

And they aren't wrong... the stylized stuff just trivializes everything... but hey, you gotta sell tickets to kids, right? It's a closed loop. :-)
...
Someone asked why society pushes violence but treats sex as taboo... and some nameless guy put it perfectly: modern Western society basically runs on fueling sexual desire and then making sure nobody actually fulfills it. :-)
...if they actually want to watch something, they'll find a way to guilt their way into it...the reality is we’re living under a child's dictatorship here 😁😁...look at it this way: if a studio sells a movie to a kid, they've basically already sold a ticket to the parent...horror? they'd probably find a way to sell tickets to the devil himself...long live capitalism :-/
