Is it wrong to ignore someone else's misfortune?

Situations like this are just brutal, and honestly, you have to experience it firsthand—having someone close to you actually going through it—to truly get how heavy it is. I used to never understand why women stayed with guys like that. Like, if you have a place to go, why stay??
But then one day, someone super close to me ended up right in the middle of it. Her boyfriend is hitting her, and since they aren't even married, she doesn't have any reason at all to stick around.
Every single time, she comes to me crying about how much she can't take it. I’ve gone off on him so hard we almost got into a physical fight (he wouldn't dare lay a finger on me, though, because he knows I'd call the cops in a heartbeat), but nothing seems to work. She keeps going back to him. There isn't a week or two goes by without her running back to his side. I talk to her constantly, asking her why she does this to herself, why she won't love herself more, but she just stays quiet and then says: "Maybe I'm just a masochist, I don't even know... it's my own fault, there's nothing anyone can do, not even you." And what else is there left to do?? I'm still not giving up on her, I love her so much and I'll be right there whenever she needs me... but man...
