Gaming PC build under $600? in Desktops ·
Nathan Moore6 said:In my experience, and from what I hear from people I know working in 3D development, AMD has always been garbage compared to Intel or NVIDIA.

Gaming laptops cost way too much, easily over $1,500, and I’ve owned a G75 so I know the deal. Gaming laptops suck because they weigh 10-15 pounds and act more like desktops. The battery life is pathetic. If you want a real laptop, get something like a MacBook where the battery actually lasts half a day. That’s the whole point of a laptop.

You're generalizing way too much. On the CPU side, AMD had series that were actually solid and left Intel with nothing to say for themselves. Just look at the Phenom II series—until the i5 chips showed up, Phenom was king of the hill.

It's the same story with graphics cards. Every generation, either NVIDIA or AMD has a better card depending on the price bracket. Unless we're talking about one specific series, there's no point in generalizing or pushing this fanboy nonsense.

Ryan Gonzalez4 said:Basically, the rules are: don't overspend and everything has to be available at Best Buy.

Here’s my "must-have" list:
LGA 1151 motherboard for an Intel Core i5-6600. (I’d prefer the 6600K, but whatever, Best Buy doesn't carry it).
For the GPU, I was torn between an NVIDIA GTX 970 or an AMD Radeon R9 390. Everything else is just preference.
With the case, I just need front-panel USB 3.0 and decent space for all the parts.
Should a solid PSU, one HDD, one SSD, and 16GB of RAM hold up for the next few years?

That's the gist. Let me know what you think. I'm counting on you guys—you've always come through with the hardware advice on this board. 👏

If you're paying cash, there are way better shops than Best Buy. But if you're doing credit or installments... then stick with Best Buy.
Nathan Moore6 said:8 gigs of RAM is nothing by today's standards. You need at least 16, maybe even more. From what I've seen, hitting 12 gigs is way too easy even if you aren't doing anything heavy.

Stop talking nonsense... I'm running on 6 gigs and everything works fine. I've got a game running in the background, Google Chrome with 20 tabs open, and music playing through Media Player, and I'm only using 5.2GB.

The price could drop $667 if they just did some basic color grading and slapped on a 4K IPS monitor.

Even when choosing the installment plan, the total stays the same as what Robert Rodriguez2 put together. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, obviously.

Between these two builds, can someone explain the actual difference? I stopped following hardware specs ages ago.
Just want to pick one so we can kill this thread. :-)

The main split is just the GPU and the SSD. The NVIDIA card pulls slightly more power and has 4GB of VRAM (which is basically 3.5GB effective), while the AMD one has 8GB. That extra headroom helps if you're playing at higher resolutions with heavy textures. As for storage, the SSD is cheaper than the Sandisk 850, but you lose two years of warranty. Everything else is pretty much identical.
