My advice? Don't ever cheap out on the power supply. A junk PSU can cause a chain reaction—one failure could take out one component, or just fry the whole damn rig at once.

Intel HD 4600 vs. AMD APU in Desktops ·
Patrick Stewart97 said:A buddy of mine wants to pick up a PC with integrated graphics. He needs it mostly for work rather than gaming, but he wants to be able to toss on some newer titles at low/medium settings in 1080p every now and then. He’s debating between an Intel Core i5-4670 with Intel HD 4600 graphics or going with an AMD Apa. From what I gather, an Apa is just integrated graphics inside the CPU too, but everyone claims they're way more powerful than Intel's stuff and that Intel users can't even compete. Is there any truth to that?

If you're talking strictly about gaming, the Apa has the better iGPU...

Depends on the budget. Figure that out first and we'll see what kind of build we can put together.

Zachary Smith2 said:I've already got a case and a power supply, but I guess I could swap them out for something actually decent if needed. Right now, I'm running this 500GB Toshiba hard drive. I did a little digging online, and apparently, an HD 6670 is supposed to be the sweet spot for performance with this CPU. I’d probably drop most of my cash $1333 on that. Also, is this hard drive kind of a joke just because it was the cheapest one they had?

It's not trash. What kind of power supply are you running? Open the case and read the label on it.

If it's some cheap junk, just swap that out too.

Integrated graphics are fine for what you're looking to do.

I tried to stay right at your minimum budget limit, so that $1333 is plenty... some people will definitely insist on adding an SSD and whatever else 😁 so you might end up going over your maximum budget of $1500

I put together everything you need so when you sit down at this PC, it just works.😁

Scott Howard13 said:That’s exactly what I’m aiming for—maybe they’ll toss me a newer model as a replacement for this Extreme 3 board, something with a more recent chipset or whatever. When I first filed the warranty claim, I figured there was a chance they might just swap it out for a different, newer board, but obviously not. Now, a year and a half has passed, making it three years total since I bought the PC. It would be ideal if they could swap it for an Intel socket, but I highly doubt that's on the table... I'll probably head over to Best Buy on Monday to drop off the motherboard since I'll be in Chicago anyway, but man, being without a computer for another two weeks? That absolutely kills me. I’ve also been thinking about putting together some combinations where I buy a dedicated sound card; I actually really need one because I play drums and want to start recording, and having better audio quality would make everything feel much higher end—even with my current stock setup, it’s not exactly great. I don't necessarily need all these USB 3.0 ports, but I might as well use the warranty while I still have it. I'll let you know if they upgrade me to an Intel socket or at least a newer chipset.

You definitely won't be able to switch the socket, that's a lock. You can't just swap an Intel board for something else.

The best you'll likely get is a board equivalent to yours.

There's plenty of room in a decent budget setup to fit two solid GPUs.

It's on sale at Best Buy

We aren't cutting it that close.😁 ☕
Larry Ortiz5 said:NVIDIA Integrated Graphics is built right into the processor and handles basic stuff just fine. If you're looking to actually game, you'll need to grab a dedicated graphics card and plug it into the PCIe slot on the motherboard. Honestly, if you go that route, you'll probably need a new power supply too, because what you have now won't cut it for a real card. Just check out crimsonstag84's
build for ideas.

Listen, kid, that EVGA 450W can handle an i5 and a 270x easily enough.🙂

Old school, but a beast.🙂
