2018 Car Reveal and Pre-season Testing in Formula 1 ·
ruggedhawk20 said:Who even is his teammate? Wake up, man. You're dreaming.

Marcus Ericsson! A driver who actually has experience under his belt.

I almost forgot—Charles Leclerc is going to absolutely embarrass Ericsson in qualifying. Leclerc is quite simply a qualifying specialist.

Leclerc has managed to secure wins and pole positions in just about every series he’s ever entered, from his early days in karting right through to now.
In fact, Leclerc finished just behind—get this—Max Verstappen in the World Karting Championship. And we all know the level of engine support and sheer privilege Max had in that category of motorsport.

Leclerc is a driving phenomenon. Mark my words. You are witnessing pure driving genius; you are witnessing the birth of a superstar. Consider yourselves lucky.

Let’s set aside the car and the designers for a moment; the guys at Alfa Romeo Sauber are getting this:

, this kid is an absolute phenomenon. During his debut season in F2, he completely dismantled the competition. Go ahead, try to name even one other driver in history who pulled that off.

If my memory serves me—and I'm fairly certain it does—we're looking at 7 wins, 8 pole positions, 9 podiums, and 3 fastest laps all within a single rookie season.

A total outsider is entering Formula 1, and I am convinced he will utterly embarrass his teammate during his first year on the grid.

Adrian Newey wasn't some pure original even when Red Bull was stacking up titles.
Still, nothing stopped him from building absolute monsters of cars—machines that were only ever held back by the engine.

Then again, isn't it funny how the most innovative and original team of the last decade has also been the biggest laughingstock during that same period?

👍, you claim they were limited solely by the engine! How exactly do you intend to prove to me that Red Bull possessed the superior chassis and aerodynamics over the last two or three years?
And why do you hold this conviction that Newey is invincible and the undisputed best?

Child's play. At least two designers working in Formula 1 today are on par with Adrian Newey. At least two.

The sidepods on the Alfa Romeo look absolutely stunning—pretty radical and aggressive if you ask me.

There is zero chance they’ll just be backmarkers anymore; these things could actually throw a wrench in everyone's plans. Even with the Renault and Force India teams in the mix, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes are still going to be in a league of their own.

The sheer superiority of the Red Bull aerodynamics is on full display here🙂. Fire Adrian Newey for delivering this half-baked product!

That car looks absolutely lethal already. Like, seriously lethal!!!
If Renault manages to build an engine that’s even remotely reliable and has half the power they had last year, Lewis Hamilton is grabbing that title, no question.

Go check out the Formula 1 technical deep dives and see what's actually being hidden under that camo livery...
I'll give it a few more days, but honestly? I think Ferrari can comfortably bank on finishing 3rd...

EDIT:

Is it just the microphone 🤔 ???
To me, the sound seems noticeably louder and sharper than last year. It sounds beefier, like way more power.😁

What exactly is "aggressive" about it to you, friend? The color?
There isn't even a theoretical chance those small side air intakes are doing any cooling. There has to be an additional air intake hidden somewhere under that camouflage—that's the only strange part, and it might actually be revolutionary for this car.

In three days, once Ferrari and Mercedes unveil their cars (especially Ferrari), Adrian Newey will probably find himself scratching his head a little.

So, Tibi, in three days you'll see a revolutionary red car and a Mercedes that moves significantly away from the design philosophy they've used for the last two or three seasons.

I am not optimistic at all regarding Red Bull Racing.

Nothing unusual here. It was bound to happen. It seems Adrian Newey just decided to copy Ferrari, likely because his creative well is running a bit dry in his later years.
I am looking forward to seeing what Mercedes, Ferrari, and Alfa bring to the table.

What really interests me is whether Mercedes will follow suit and start copying Ferrari too, given that all three cars have essentially become Ferrari clones now.
2018 Car Reveal and Pre-season Testing in Formula 1 ·
@Tibi, you’ve missed the mark twice here. First off, Mercedes doesn't have a superior power unit compared to Ferrari. They might hold a slight edge, but it isn't nearly as significant as you’re implying.
Second, you suggested that Adrian Newey is going to copy Ferrari 🙂, which is an interesting take. Copy what, exactly? I wasn't aware that Newey had any insight into Ferrari's unreleased designs.
How is he supposed to copy them if Ferrari shows up again with brilliant aerodynamics?

Now Toto is actually sweating over Renault and McLaren 😢
Poor guy. They’re stuck in the middle again, struggling just to stay in the title hunt 🙂

Honestly, I don't get how this guy hasn't bored himself to death yet with all this constant drama 🙄

In reality, their only true competition will be Ferrari and Red Bull. I suspect we're looking at an incredibly tight season between those three teams.

We shall see whether Mercedes Resta or Adrian Newey manages to pose the greater threat.
2018 Car Reveal and Pre-season Testing in Formula 1 ·
You can hallucinate all you want about what these guys should look like, but honestly? Half of them probably pass out from sheer exhaustion just thinking about the workload they have to tackle before the season even kicks off!

The only ones looking visibly stoked in that launch video were the Mercedes crew, especially Toto Wolff. He had a grin stretched from ear to ear, looking for all the world like a hyena straight out of The Lion King.🙂

stormybadger8 said:So, is that ugly, clunky Halo thing standardized? Does it have to be identical on every car?
Or is there room for a few surprises if they start using the Halo as an aerodynamic add-on? 🤔

There aren't any variations allowed. It is standardized and must remain identical across all cars. Perhaps they could change the color, but that's about it.

McLaren will be the most visually striking, given how impossible it is to overlook the Ford branding🎉.

Douglas Fisher78 said:What kind of numbers are we looking at here? For both options. If you could provide an estimate 😉

I’m thinking a laptop for maybe $2,000 max, provided it has a working battery and some semblance of a warranty left.

As for the PC $1000, perhaps $167 or even more, so let's say a minimum of $1000
wiredotter14 said:It’s not even the most expensive stuff out there, mostly just 20nm DDR3, but honestly, demand is through the roof.

The thing is, it’s rarely found on GDDR5 cards, and almost always north of 6000MHz. I don't really follow all these memory speed designations myself.

It seems like GPU prices have climbed everywhere lately; that’s clearly why. Honestly, even those mid-range cards come with their own dedicated RAM🙂 and it's always the fastest possible spec they can manufacture—which is just code for the most expensive type available.

And frankly, what they were asking for those older 6200 models was just way too much!

edit

The price on that RAM linked above is quite high

It’s neither more nor less $50 higher 🤣, they clearly messed up the pricing, haha

wiredotter14 said:The max temperature for this card is 95C anyway. Fermi architecture is pretty inefficient, so you can't really expect much more from a passive cooler.

For you, hitting 95C after a 10-minute benchmark in an open case—in a room that's 59F with a window halfway open—is totally fine. Great!!!

But sitting at the Windows desktop under those exact same conditions, it’s at 73C.??

What am I supposed to expect this summer with a closed case? 150C?? Just constant PC shutdowns, I guess.

ASUS simply botched this product, plain and simple. I've used plenty of passive cards in my life, but this thing is a heating miracle considering it only draws 15W.

Claiming this card isn't meant for gaming is just a cheap excuse; it's clearly not even fit for basic Windows tasks or watching a 4K movie.

Though, I have to admit, its performance is surprisingly decent compared to the Intel Pentium G4400 integrated graphics.

I’m definitely returning this GT 710 to the Center. Not only did it arrive without any LP limiters, but it’s also overheating like crazy. Under Windows, the card sits at 73°C, and after just 10 minutes of benchmarking in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, it spikes all the way up to 95°C.
Besides that, it is blatantly obvious that someone else already returned this card to the Center before us; the driver CD had clearly been opened.

I'll head over to Best Buy and pick up the Gigabyte version with the actual fan instead.

wiredotter14 said:I wasn't looking for a benchmark, but I suspect the GT 730 actually performs better.

If you bought it online, you can return it within 14 days for any reason at all.

That is precisely what I intend to do tomorrow. I will head down to the store in person and demand my money back, seeing as the card was paid directly to GLS upon delivery.

By the way, for those interested, Center is now working with GLS; they ditched Overseas. Good news.
