My gut feeling is just telling me: you're being an idiot. But honestly, I don't see the point in arguing over someone's musical taste, so I'll just ask—what makes you say that?
quietmaker44 said:Dire Straits are alright; I love about 60% of their catalog. They wander around a bit too much sometimes, but whatever... For me, the heavy hitters aren't necessarily the big hits, but stuff like: Ride Across The River, single handed sailor, The Man's Too Strong, When It Comes to You... etc.
If you're a woman, I respect you purely for picking those first three tracks. If you're a guy, well, I'm not gonna pretend we're best friends or anything, but the beer is on me.

And I gotta know... is it just me, or is 'Ride Across The River' actually... something else entirely? Like, special...
Hey there. Ride Across The River (and honestly, The Man's Too Strong too) is an absolute masterpiece, easily top-tier Dire Straits, yet somehow totally overlooked... It’s right up there with stuff like Lions or Single-handed Sailor...
Then there's my personal favorite—something that was never officially out there (well, maybe it popped up in one of those endless reissues by now)—What's The Matter with you, Baby?
As for that keyboard stuff... look, the sound in Private Investigations is legendary, probably one of the best ever. But that specific sound you're talking about? The one from Industrial Disease and Walk of Life? In my book, that's hands down the most grating thing in the history of pop music...
Honestly, I couldn't care less about how popular someone is... But looking back at the whole Dire Straits catalog, I can only pick out a handful of tracks that aren't actually great or even decent. And with everything Knopfler's done since then, there are only a few songs that really hit the mark for me... 🙂 Not that I'm trying to tell anyone what to listen to... 😁 (though let's be real, arguing over taste is pretty much the only thing we ever do on this forum anyway)
🤔 You really don't remember? 😲 It aired late at night, maybe fifteen years ago... I think the title was "Singing Detective". I can't even tell if I sat through a full episode or what, but I know it wasn't half bad.

I mean... you definitely stumble upon some gems, no doubt about it. But I wouldn't go so far as to say he's crushing it quite the same way. Honestly, none of his solo stuff really hits the same level as a classic Dire Straits album, even if a few individual tracks are killer...
I was honestly going to hit you back with some classic regional insults, but after seeing this... I can't even... 😂 It’s literally the first thing that pops up on Google. 🙏

Alright, that was my first thought too. But honestly, it kind of blows my mind that you—as the ultimate indie rock fanatic—didn't have a different thought process entirely... 😲
Once they added the Pop section, the whole magazine just went to hell. Honestly, back in that other phase—when they used to come out wrapped in posters like that—it was actually a decent read. Way better than what Jukebox was doing back then. Early Jukebox was something else entirely, but those random issues they put out in the mid-eighties were basically nothing... Rhythm didn't even show up until the very end of the decade, which meant during my prime years (like, 13 to 18), I was stuck relying on Rock as my main source for everything. Until about 1987, Rock was actually pretty solid. Jadranka Janković rules. 🙂
I’m way too young for Jukebox, and honestly, I’m a bit too old for Rhythm, so the core of my collection is basically just stuff I managed to pull from the archives of Rock magazine. Which, by the way, is a total must-have. I’ve also got copies of Jukebox, Rhythm, MOL—anyone remember those? Pop Skandija... 😎 - but Rock is the foundation.
As for Mr. Williams, I’m skipping him for the exact same reason I’m passing on Majbadimuz a day early—I’m all about that nature life. I’ll be out wandering through the mountains, soaking in the views and hunting for mushrooms. It’s a hell of a lot better than those smoke-filled, music-obsessed club vibes.
Plus, by some miracle, I’ll actually be staying just ten minutes away from Pazarište and the local brewery where they make Velebitsko pivo... 😬
Look, friends, Mogwai is a killer band and pure ear candy, but Shellac? That’s just mindless noise and total garbage. Not trying to start anything, just calling it like I see it...

Well, the Devil is the Devil, whatever he says is probably wrong anyway...
I don't really bring them up much these days (except when they hit Broadway a bit too hard), but if you ignore that one failed comeback attempt from their On Every street era, I pretty much love almost everything they’ve ever recorded. The only exception has to be those little rockabilly tracks with the most irritating keyboard sounds in history...
Man, if this isn't basically the ultimate, top-tier AOR anthem from the eighties! I don't know how I'm supposed to get through the day without hearing this at least once...
It’s gone straight into my ŠUP ŠUP playlist. Seriously, why didn't anyone write songs this powerful about my high school? 😢
