Honestly, my absolute favorite has to be Eat a Peach. It’s such a wild mix of studio tracks and those raw live recordings—the ones featuring Duane and the ones without him... 🙈 At this point, the only thing I actually have on vinyl from the Allman brothers is that phenomenal double compilation, The Road Goes on Forever. In my book, it's easily the most essential ABB release; it gives you this perfect snapshot of that whole era when these guys were basically running the universe while recklessly tearing up the highway on their motorcycles.

Yeah, that’s also from the post-Duane era. That Brothers and Sisters album is a total beast, even if I personally lean more toward their earlier stuff...

They’re just unbeatable when they’re together...

Man, where do I even start... The Allman brothers and their crew were incredible blues players, but as time went on, they started drifting away from standard blues and leaning into that melodic country vibe that defines their absolute best work. And look, when it comes to Duane Allman, if someone ever approaches me and claims "he was the greatest guitarist of all time," I’m just gonna nod my head and agree. No argument needed.

Speaking of which, there's this one story—it's not directly about ABB, but bear with me. Back in the day, Davor Milišić played this blues track on a Rock Anthology program that absolutely floored me. This was before the internet existed, so even after I correctly guessed the song might be "Lone Me a Dim," I still had zero clue who was actually playing it. Finally, during the season finale, the guy opened up the phone lines for listener requests based on stuff he'd played all year. I couldn't help myself; I called in, asked, and finally found out it was Boz Scaggs. Later on, Milišić played the original version by Freddie Johnstone (or something like that) and added, "I think the listener who requested this will be happy, even if this version lacks that ten-minute Duane Allman solo." Everything clicked right then... I finally understood why that Scaggs version sounded so damn beautiful... 🙂

And honestly, the way his guitar and Betts' guitar bleed together on "Blue Sky" is probably the most gorgeous interplay between two lead guitars I've ever heard, even if Wishbone Ash put up some serious competition for that title.

stormyviper11 😍 Duane Allman.
I’d probably call it The Simpsons, but let's face it, that's just another imaginary side project from the leader of an equally imaginary band called Barber Shop... 😬

Plus, they’ve got these pathetic choruses like:

The Baker is making bread
in the middle of getting mad
at that little girl from Chicago
If he was brewing beer instead
she'd be in a much better mood
dancing pogo or maybe even hula
🙂

Is that the same guy from downtown who was jumping all over the roof of Boeing when I was wasted out of my mind?

Just like every scene that came before it, this one had its golden era, its peak, and now it’s just circling the drain. There’s zero fresh blood, zero new ideas, just the same old crew dragging themselves along... You have to wonder when we'll see some kind of revival to actually breathe some life back into this thing, you know? It happens periodically. And yeah, let's be real, everyone's getting old and the people who actually give a damn are becoming a tiny minority. For everyone else, it’s just a habit because they don't know anything else, or half of them just got married and started families... But I'm telling you again, it’s the exact same cycle as every movement before this one. When you're right in the middle of it, you honestly feel like what you're doing is totally groundbreaking and unique. But man, it really isn't.

Reminds me of this buddy of mine who finally tracked down Zdenko kolar from Idol. He goes up to him all serious, asking those deep, heavy questions about the meaning of the universe and what they’re actually singing about on The Defense and the Last Day. You could see it in his eyes—he was looking for some kind of divine revelation, expecting to walk away with the absolute essence of life and everything we fight for...

Zdenko just looks at him and goes, "Man, what a joke..." 🤣
One of my absolute favorite lyrics of all time goes like this:

I've got the worst hangover Dean Martin ever had 🤣

Hehe... I actually wrote a blog post about this like a year ago, just rambling on about those first times you hear certain artists and how they just stick with you forever...

The first ones always hit different.

There have been a few brief flashes in pop music history where actually innovative, exciting sounds managed to blow up commercially—mostly back in the sixties. Maybe the last time that really happened was during the New Wave era in the late seventies. But honestly, if you pull up any old Billboard compilation from even those "golden" years, you'll see that the sheer volume of garbage hits in any given era has always been pure commercial trash... I can't say things have gotten significantly worse since MTV showed up, it’s just that we tend to romanticize the past. We only remember the quality tracks that actually stuck around, while we conveniently forget all the absolute filler that surrounded them...

Man, that was exactly the phase where country music felt the least relevant to me. I was spinning those records way more during my early twenties, and honestly, even now that I'm... well, pushing through my late thirties...

If they just called the award "influence on singing over the last 40 years" instead of "in the last 40 years," it would actually make some sense... ☕
They’re all pretty terrible, honestly, but if I had to pick one, I'm casting my vote for Putin.
