Easily one of the absolute worst days I've had in weeks:

1. today 🙂

Calling him "President" like you're some hardcore partisan...

Look, Pertini wasn't just the most likable statesman we've ever had. I honestly think he’s the only leader where regular people would just spontaneously show up on his street on his birthday just to say congrats...

Those Romans can be pretty ridiculous sometimes...
I don't really get all the nitpicking about the plot in Jasper Morell's film. Honestly, it’s easily one of the most coherent and well-executed stories in animation I've seen in a long time... I'm seriously counting down the days until we get sequels.

That D is pretty likable, but honestly, there were a few better flicks on the lineup tonight.

I’ve been saying it at Annecy for a few years now—there's plenty of solid stuff and decent shorts, but hardly any absolute masterpieces. But man, Jasper Morell's Mysterious Geographical Explorations is exactly that kind of standout hit... I'm seriously itching to see the next two parts of that trilogy they announced.

You can catch all my takes on the films over at my blog.

Crushing's absolute peak was this one he did on some TV show right after our team got knocked out in Japan:

Bye bye bye, Chase
Is it some geisha's fault?
Your game was total trash,
so now you're headed home!

You might even have to type "dirty" instead of "dirdy" since half the people online don't even realize what the actual title is... You can find streaming options if you want to revisit it. Plus, you can always check the credits on the intro to see it’s Stretch Films. 🙂

Yeah, thanks... that's basically what I was getting at. If you can't find a way to stream it, there's info on the movie scattered all over the place...
Roof Sex Dirdy Birdy

Couldn't track down Dirdy Birdy, but here's a link to stream one of the absolute funniest flicks ever shown at Annecy...

Dirdy Birdy.
You'll find plenty of links out there, just Google it...
What's going on here? No thread yet? 😕

Come on, let's go—drop your takes, your rants, your hype...

First night was pretty decent. Most of the flicks were interesting, and honestly, a good chunk of them were actually fun. Only thing is, Paradise City was a total drag for me. Our own Leviathan has some of those same annoying vibes, though the visuals actually save it. Even if the animation wasn't exactly top-tier, I ended up voting for Stormy Wind because it genuinely cracked me up... like, actual tears. A few other films hit that spot too (that Fridge Deer guy was definitely the standout of the night), but Stormy Wind took the cake.

I'll be posting more deep dives on my blog.

So you spend the first few years thinking like that, only to end up writing some weird freak column for a men's magazine... 🙄
Wise guys just shrug, mutter "whatever," and walk away after grabbing a quick six-pack from the corner store...

Look, all those factors play a part, but refueling? That’s the real game-changer. If you took that away, teams would actually HAVE TO earn their positions on track by passing people instead of just playing tactical games with pit stops. Plus, car designs and all those technical specs would basically be forced to evolve to allow for more wheel-to-wheel action, because every team would be fighting for every inch... It's funny how a lot of old-school fans claim Formula 1 started going downhill right after Ayrton Senna passed, but they're missing the forest for the trees. You have to realize that refueling was introduced right around that same time, which is a much bigger reason why the racing changed the way it did.

Bradley Nelson2 said:I think pit stops should stay, I mean strategy is part of the fun! But honestly, it feels like driving these cars is way easier now than it used to be, and instead of pushing harder on track, drivers have just become total softies. I don't think the cars or the rules are to blame at all, it's just the drivers themselves being absolute losers...

That’s a completely wrong take.

Look, let's be real here—filtering talent through the junior categories has never been this intense. If anything, the average quality of drivers in Formula 1 today is probably higher than it ever was. These guys had to fight tooth and nail to prove themselves in those lower tiers where everyone is neck-and-neck; you'd know that if you actually watched karting or the smaller feeder series. Every driver on the grid today knows how to overtake and play aggressive, they just aren't allowed to—or they don't want to—because the sport is insanely expensive now. It's run by massive corporations that hate "unnecessary risk." And strategy? Strategy has always been deep. You had tire calls, different setups, and guys who were masters at either the sprint phase like Ayrton Senna or the long game like Alain Prost... There are endless tactical layers beyond just refueling.

The real tragedy is seeing two of the best from this new era, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen, show exactly how brilliant and aggressive they are every single time they have to carve through the field after a bad start... We’re basically robbing them of their own talent because of stupid rules and over-engineered strategies. Don't get me wrong, I have huge respect for how Michael Schumacher could just hammer out a few blistering laps on an empty tank and slice through the pits, but watching that isn't even what makes it interesting anymore. Honestly, if you'll excuse my language, I'm pretty much sick of watching people just drive through the pits. Sure, without refueling, we might have seen some boring races back in the day—like in the eighties, for example—but we would definitely have way more excitement right now. This is the 57th season of the World Series, and refueling has only been a thing for the last 13 years. We can't act like that's some permanent, essential part of the sport's DNA, even if most modern Formula 1 fans can't even remember what racing looked like before the "strategy" era took over.🙂 🤮

I can nail the pronunciation for Breckenridge, but I always butcher Christian, and honestly, I can't even begin to tackle those Faulknerian vibes at all... 😁

My personal Top 10 list of all-time favorite French flicks:

1. My Uncle - because besides Dad and Charlie Chaplin, this guy is easily the most complete and brilliant filmmaker in history (skipping his other stuff so he doesn't hog the whole list)
2. Atlanta - just because of that raw, brutal beauty from a genius who burned out way too soon
5. The Foggy Coast - honestly, just thinking about that suicide by swimming out into the ocean makes me freeze up even now
4. A Man and a Woman - they took the most pathetic, sappy ingredients imaginable and somehow cooked up a perfect love story
5. Ransom for Fear - if I'm not mistaken, this is officially the most intense movie ever made
6. To the Last Breath - mostly because of that Melville line and whatever else...
7. The Hole - that bit where they flip the mirror in the final scene is just... wow
8. Red Hand Goupi - probably the best depiction of narrow-mindedness and hypocrisy ever put on screen
9. Bully - because you’ll never see two faces match up quite like Jacques Brel and Ventura did in a single film
10. Diva - adding this just so people don't think I'm some pretentious snob who hates everything modern
