By the way, you might want to consider your metabolism; it could be sluggish. I recently cut out sweets and soda, and I noticed some immediate weight loss. 🙂 (Consuming just half a liter of Coke a day can easily lead to a 15-pound weight gain over a year, and I suspect alcohol works similarly).
Kevin Gonzalez79 said:And what about whiskey or wine?

Everything carries calories; I don't have the exact figures at hand, but they exist.
If you simply cannot go without alcohol, perhaps aim for a single glass of wine per day...🙂
It is an obvious fact that alcohol leads to weight gain. Especially beer.

that's actually good news. personally, I always find myself rooting for those people standing on the edge of skyscrapers—just wondering if they'll finally pull the trigger or hesitate. just make up your mind and jump already. there's something about that sound—that sickening thud when they hit the pavement😁😁

btw, if you decide you prefer cutting instead, just remember—go down the arm, not across the wrist. 😉
and watch out with the pills; you don't want a massive dose to just end in vomiting. that's a messy way to go.

Good grief. Seeing someone as pathetic as you makes me feel significantly better about my own situation. 🙄 Escaped from Brooklyn, did we?

Things have felt a little easier lately. I've been reflecting on life and finally accepting that there might be no inherent meaning—just one vast, chaotic mess. Since our time here is so fleeting, I suppose I can try to make my brief stay somewhat comfortable...
As for self-love, I hope it yields results. I've begun implementing some positive changes across several areas of my life. I lack my old enthusiasm, but I suspect I'll be alright for a while. :-) Once the old feelings resurface, I'll be back here typing again. Though, I do hope they don't...
Thank you all for the advice! :-)

God could be your only real answer. Pick up The Bible and quotes in the New Testament, and just sit with those words and reflect on your life.

There is one Name that can solve all your problems. He suffered for you, and since you are suffering too, you already have something in common... you just need to reach out and make contact.
God, Jesus Christ, is the only hope in situations like this. He loves you, and His love is the way for you to finally feel loved too.

However, you shouldn't walk this path alone; you'll need professional guidance. On one hand, you need a solid psychotherapist who is also a believer, and if possible, a compassionate priest who actually understands what you're going through.
Don't lose heart, help is available!

Look, it isn't that I lack self-love. It would be more accurate to say I occasionally despise myself.😲 Usually, when things aren't going my way and the problems pile up, I lose my temper and take it all out on myself. 🙄

Benjamin Long said:What exactly was she rambling about if you don't mind me asking? What kind of comments were they, and how specifically were they "rude"? I once had a friend who constantly made his life situation an issue in that exact way; no matter what you said to him—whether it was constructive advice or anything else—he would twist it into something else entirely. It felt like he was just fishing for attention, and whenever he didn't get enough, he'd spiral into depression. I truly believe the root of it was being an only child of divorced parents and all those other factors...

For instance... I can't recall the exact question, but I mentioned that I was still seeing this guy even though he was abusive. She just rolled her eyes, gave me this condescending look, and remarked, "You're sleeping with him despite the threats of blah blah blah?" Honestly, I didn't go to her to have my morality judged by a priest; I went to her for advice. There were other instances as well, but I don't recall them clearly. I simply concluded that she isn't any wiser than I am, and that it would be easier to handle things on my own...🙄

We are more colorful, more complex, and more layered, but the core essence remains identical.

A melancholy thought, yet an honest one...

driftingwolf45 said:A value system isn't actually necessary, because if you have one, you'll just try to fit into it, which means living a lie.

Quality isn't necessary either—that’s just another form of valuation. When you decide one thing is higher quality than another, you're basically lying to yourself that it's better.

Just try to remember what you love, what you dream about, what matters to you, or what truly fires you up.

If that happens to be goldfish—then build an aquarium, buy a few fish, get some books, study them, write an article for a website about goldfish, breed them, and start selling them to local pet stores across the US....

In other words—you're the one who gives your dreams meaning and quality, and you're the one who decides what the value system is. A lot of people just can't handle that much freedom.

That is precisely what I do. :-) I despise feeling useless, so I always strive toward something that brings me joy. However, there are periods where I move through life like a ghost. I simply wander around, listless and heavy... until I recover, at which point I can return to any task with my usual focus. During depressive bouts, I lack all willpower and feel constantly on edge... Perhaps worst of all is that I occasionally find a strange comfort in that lethargy, making it quite difficult to emerge from it...

driftingwolf45 said:I guess Nick can't really help me here; maybe it's just my own feeling that things won't get better. I think the best way to look at it is by asking yourself what you'd actually lose if your mental struggles suddenly vanished. Most of the time, people realize they'd end up with a huge amount of free energy that they wouldn't even know how to use.

If you can picture what life would look like without depression—if you can even dream about who you might be without that shadow hanging over your soul—then you can slowly start using that mental energy to chase those dreams. Even just something tiny, like a first step.

That way, your mental energy isn't being turned against you. One cool thing about the mind is that it can't stay focused, productive, or creative while simultaneously spiraling into a dark mood.

Plenty of free energy? I certainly know how to use mine; I enjoy staying active and have more hobbies than I can count. It's just that occasionally, I fall into these periods where nothing feels worth doing, and all I want to do is lament my circumstances. In those moments, my will simply vanishes...

mistybison said:That hits on the core issue. 😉 When you hold yourself, others, and life itself to such impossibly high standards—standards that might be fundamentally unreachable—you end up stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction, bitterness, and feeling lost. I suggest trying a different approach to how you perceive your own worth and the world around you. It might make all the difference. 🙂

I certainly have high expectations. For myself, definitely. From others? Hmm, I wouldn't say so. It isn't that I'm failing to achieve things, but rather the feeling that I won't reach everything I want before my time runs out... I have massive expectations of myself, and I'm not sure if I can fulfill those dreams, even here in the States. It makes me think that life will just be a wasted opportunity...
Can't sleep because of the noise? in Psychology ·
The walls in my apartment are so thin that if I accidentally leaned against one too hard, I’d probably end up poking through into the next room. I’ve grown used to hearing absolutely everything... though being exhausted by nighttime usually makes falling asleep easy enough. My main issue isn't actually noise, but rather tactile sensitivity. If a pillow, mattress, or any other surface feels even slightly off or too firm, sleep becomes impossible...

Even a tiny step counts as a solid start.

Yes, I feel like I am starting my thousandth attempt at self-improvement and positive thinking today...😛

Everything you see on TV or read in books is just a reflection of someone else's thoughts—it's someone else's creativity (and honestly, most people are getting way too rich off it these days).

Just because you see something doesn't mean you have to model your life after it or follow that exact same path.

Alright, time for a little bit of cheesy inspiration to wrap things up: you are the master of your own destiny.

Yes, I realize happiness is a choice. But right now, that feels less like actual help and more like an empty platitude...

rustyfalcon52 said:Is it possible you've spent years constructing this idealized version of who you "should" be, rather than accepting who you actually are? Popular psychology books tend to oversimplify things... once you grasp the actual foundations and see where those "easy" fixes fall short, the whole thing starts to look a bit absurd and strangely written.

Life only holds as much meaning as you decide to give it.

As for that lingering melancholy—I went through a similar stretch for about four years. For me, the sense of purpose was always there, even if others couldn't see it through my eyes. I swung between deep sadness and bursts of joy, fluctuating constantly... until eventually, slowly, I began to see the world through a clearer lens. It wasn't overnight, but I learned to accept myself first, and then everyone else. Even though I never cared much for outside opinions back then, I make sure to speak my mind clearly now. I still work hard on many things, not because I consider myself particularly patient or tolerant, but because I find peace in looking back and seeing how everything unfolded. Sorry, I drifted a bit off-topic...

Hang in there.

I am unsure if I have created an idealized version of myself. The only ideal I strive for is simply being who I am. I do not force myself into situations that do not suit me, I do not lie, I remain honest, and I am not easily swayed... For instance, I will always do what I believe is right rather than conforming just to be accepted by the crowd... if you know what I mean. I endeavor to be honest with myself, rather than deceiving myself into believing I am someone I am not.

Tyler Bishop56 said:Life isn't meaningless. It's more like that bastard God rigged the game so we have to invent our own purpose. It's a cheap trick, sure, but at least you get to make the choice.

Life hurts. Sometimes it really does kick your teeth in. I don't have some magic cure, but personally, I'm way too stubborn to let life win.

Instead of throwing yourself under a bus, maybe try an adrenaline sport. Go skydiving or something. You get those little hits of mortality in a controlled setting, and it actually makes you want to stay alive.

I've never been much of an athlete. Though, I occasionally wonder if I could have made it as a police officer ;-) but I suppose that's a man's game, and as a woman, I fear I wouldn't achieve much :-( Still, chasing criminals and facing a little risk just to come out on top sounds exciting :-) But then again, life isn't a movie...
Sports aren't really my thing, though I'd love to find one that actually appeals to me...

It's a shame you aren't more persistent.

So, you believe I should continue working on myself even if it only yields a few good months? I am not certain. If that is truly all there is to it, then I suppose I will proceed. However, I was hoping for something more permanent... :-(

Look, I get it if you think some specific therapist is a total hack, or if you’ve hung out with those pseudo-intellectual types who love throwing around shallow psychoanalysis like they actually know something. But calling the entire field of psychology "trash"?

That’s like saying physiognomy—the idea that you can judge someone's character by their face—is just "basic nonsense."🤣

It is clear you did not read my introductory remarks...
