Laptop screen issues: Help needed! in Laptops ·
Jack Cook7 said:They usually have these little clips or slides related to the keyboard area, too, which you’ll need to unlatch from the top side if you want to get in. With some models, I think you might even have to pull the battery out first or something. Usually, you can just find a manual on the manufacturer's website that shows how to open the laptop—some of them basically tell you that you have to take the whole thing apart.

If it isn't working easily, it might be better to just take it to a repair shop rather than risking snapping a tiny plastic piece. Maybe ask them about any small things like what I mentioned above while they're at it, so they don't have to open it up twice.

Thanks 👍

Jack Cook7 said:The ribbon cable connecting your screen to the motherboard might have just wiggled loose, or maybe it’s actually getting damaged from being opened and closed all the time.

If you happen to have some contact cleaner and a decent precision screwdriver set handy, you could try opening the laptop up, finding that connector, unplugging it, giving it a quick spray, and then plugging it back in. It’s a bit of a project, though. Maybe a 15-minute job if you're comfortable with hardware. If that doesn't fix it, then the cable itself is likely damaged, which is a bigger job. Or, it could be the actual display panel, which would mean a full replacement.

If you decide to take it to a repair shop, I’d suggest asking for a diagnostic and an estimate first. That usually runs about $33, just so you don't get blindsided if they need to swap out something huge. Replacing a screen can sometimes cost as much as a whole new laptop. Some shops might even handle small fixes like what I mentioned right on the spot since it's included in that initial fee.

I tried opening the laptop, but I can't get it to budge—something seems stuck. Either that, or I'm just totally hopeless when it comes to hardware. I guess I'm just better at the software side of things. 😬

Thanks! I think I'll just go for the diagnostic and estimate. I don't really have any contact cleaner on hand, just my little precision screwdrivers...

You can see what's going on with the screen here > LNK

I'd say it might just be a loose connection, but I guess I could be wrong 🤷
Could someone who knows their stuff tell me if this is fixable? I'm wondering if it's even worth the money to fix it, and maybe what a repair would roughly cost? Thanks!

It's a Dell Inspiron 3737 with an Intel Core I5 4200 and 6 GB of RAM.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I totally thought we were talking about my local profile instead of the network profile, even though it clearly says that. Man, I must be exhausted or something. 🤦

Thanks!

I think I finally get it... It's all about the network, not just my computer. If the network is public, then I definitely don't want my machine showing up. But if it's private, everything's fine.

So, I'm picking public if I want to stay invisible and private if I want to be seen. It feels a little backwards to me, I guess. Wouldn't it make more sense if it were the other way around?

What should I go with? 😬

I mean, obviously, I’d love to just be tucked away from everyone else...

Well, you totally killed the vibe...
I didn't mean to do that!

bluecrane25 said:Just admit you don't know, or maybe just post that photo you deleted because of the whole thong thing. Let people decide if they're actually thongs or just regular women's underwear.
And whether the photo counts as sexual content or not.
If most people think the picture is inappropriate or too bold, then I'll be the one apologizing to you... okay?

bluecrane25, feel free to just upload the photo yourself. I'm not going to post anything that doesn't involve me directly. I mean, if Formula 1 could put up a photo in the first post just to get an opinion, then you can totally post your aunt in her non-thongs.

If you don't believe me, maybe just run a poll so you can see how much everyone actually appreciates that twisted sense of humor of yours.

Go ahead and make a poll on a Google Doc Jokes. I guess you won't even need Mark for signatures!

bluecrane25 said:What kind of moderator is this, if they can't even tell the difference between regular underwear and thongs?

Sorry, but when I was being brought on as a moderator, there wasn't really a test about knowing the difference between thongs and standard underwear. Maybe you should suggest that the admins add that to the mod application quiz, just so we don't have another situation like this happen again.

I didn't delete your protest or those other posts myself; some other mod did that. If the admins let me, I'll post a screenshot just to show who actually wiped them out. Sorry, but it's pretty obvious I'm not the only one cracking up at that GIF above!

Cheezoos, hey admins, could you please step in and explain to everyone what's going on with the censorship of adult content on Reddit? People are coming after me like I'm the one making up the rules!

PS: I honestly don't get how that GIF above relates to anything. Actually, it's probably as irrelevant as all of this...

coppersailor28 said:The main thing is that this is allowed (and the current moderator of the "Jokes" section finds it so funny, that they didn't even want to take that GIF down when I protested):

Please, quote my own post where I mentioned how much this GIF cracks me up! It feels kind of pointless to quote just the GIF itself!
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Arthur Lewis2 said:American Windows 🤦 🤣

Sorry, but I think you got that wrong!
In America, we call them Windows!

And honestly, I’m a big fan of using the American language. Pretty much everything I use is set to English except for my OS. I guess I just can't quite get used to 😁
Otherwise, Microsoft Office and all my other software—everything is in our beautiful language... If an American version exists, then I'm using the American one, period (or maybe even with an exclamation point)!
driftingpilot66 said:The installer is telling me I need to do a clean install. So, I guess an upgrade isn't going to work.

Hmm, I guess you might have missed the mark there!
Maybe wait for someone else to chime in just to be sure!
driftingpilot66 said:Maybe I’m being a bit silly here, but I don't really mind if I am. I just got my hands on Windows 7, but right now I'm still running XP. My big question is, can I actually move my Microsoft Office over from XP to Windows 7? Reinstalling isn't really an option since I don't have any of the original discs anymore. And honestly, I'm not really looking to go down the shady route with some bootleg version of Office.

So, did you get Windows 7 on a different computer, or are you planning to install Windows 7 on your old machine that currently has XP?
Basically, if it's the second one, then if you manage to pull off an upgrade from XP to Seven, your Microsoft Office should stay right where it is. That's pretty much it!
The Mechanic (2010) in Movies ·
In this movie, I spotted a microphone on screen maybe seven times, and even then, it was only for a couple of seconds. Then there was one shot where a camera actually showed up for a full five seconds! I generally love Statham and his flicks because they’re packed with action and don't get bogged down in too much plot—they're perfect for just chilling out—but with this one, I guess I spent more time noticing the mics than actually following the story 😁

PS: Maybe I caught an unfinished cut or something, but who knows...

I actually used Mint for a while, but I eventually gave up on it—not because it was bad, mind you, but mostly just because I kept forgetting to update all my info 😁

As for whether an iPhone or an Apple is better, I honestly haven't really thought about it...
Black background on subtitles in Software ·
Drew Harris2 said:Whenever I strip the subtitles off a movie—they're usually white text—I often find they have this weird, washed-out, semi-transparent gray background. It gets really annoying because if the scene turns bright, the subtitles basically disappear. I've been looking for a subtitle editor where I can just swap that background out for something solid, like black, but I haven't had much luck finding that specific setting in the apps I've tried.🤷

Honestly, it might be way easier to just change the background, font, or colors directly in whatever media player you're using to watch the movies... So, what kind of player are you running?
Do you use Windows OS in English? in Software ·
1. Windows 7 - English (it’s basically gibberish if you try to use it in American)
2. Microsoft Office 2010 - American (honestly sounds pretty fine in our language)
3. Opera - American (just like how Microsoft Office 2010 turned out)
4. Firefox - English (my wife uses it, and she says she can't really navigate the American version)

PS: I actually set up my mother-in-law's Windows XP to American, Microsoft Office 2007 to American, and Firefox to American too. I guess it’s just easier for her to follow along if a pop-up appears, so she doesn't have to bug me every single time she figures out what's going on...
