Computer science is a massive draw right now. If I recall correctly, last year you couldn't even dream of getting into a program in a major city like Chicago with fewer than 70 points... maybe 72 at least, and if you were aiming for a top-tier school like MIT, you'd need even more to account for the decimals.
I don't think they've released last year's official cutoff tables yet; I can't find them anywhere online.
The scoring is based on American History, a foreign language, the MAT, Chemistry, Physics, and technical subjects.

We all know how difficult it is to get into those specialized sports academies unless you're an elite athlete with straight A's
I managed to dig up some info in the meantime: those extra points don't actually count toward the minimum requirement. Basically, if your grades alone don't hit the cutoff, you aren't even eligible to apply to high-demand schools...
The whole situation with sports club points is a complete joke, too. It just screws over kids who aren't into the specific sports offered at their school—for instance, our local programs only cover soccer and basketball...

In my school district, the administration couldn't care less about competitions. If someone actually decides to participate, they end up studying entirely on their own while the teachers simply swoop in to collect the accolades at the end...
Anyway, I'm curious. If you manage to score, say, one point in a competition, does that count toward your GPA threshold, or do you still need enough regular credits to hit the mark regardless of that extra point?
shtefy, I hope she’s bilingual or at least spent some significant time living in the country whose language she intends to translate... it will be difficult without that immersion. If not, she should plan on spending at least a year abroad before, during, or after college Back in my day, there were a few girls in a similar major who worked in the target country prior to university, and it served them incredibly well
As for my kids—I have a son in seventh grade—they aren't exactly academic types... they grasp logic and languages easily enough, but the actual studying part is a struggle. They kill their GPA with history, geography, and science 😵
They recently complained about only having art class once every two weeks, so I found a summer drawing and painting program for them to attend ☕ I just hope they find something to be interested in besides their phones 😉 They both possess quite a bit of talent when it comes to sketching

The introduction of those 10 extra points won't actually change anything.
If the minimum threshold stays at 77—similar to how things work over at Tyco, for instance—there’s still no real way for students with a few mediocre grades from 5th through 8th grade to catch up, especially in core subjects.
That whole 5th-to-8th grade stretch remains just as stressful...
It’s decent, but hardly breathtaking. It lacks that certain something required to truly pull you in... My kids felt the exact same way... Miyazaki would have handled it differently. 🙂
