They were actually supposed to play at our local Lollapalooza back in 2007, but then that whole thing happened with Dusty Hill's ear and they ended up scrapping the entire tour. I can't honestly say I've listened to them more than anyone else in my life, but hey, people call them legends for a reason...

Yeah, there’s just something about those acoustic versions 🙂 They
never quite reached me before.
Man, if only I could just walk away like that... It felt like it's been a whole week since yesterday... But you gotta snap out of it. Sometimes a little getaway into the great outdoors does wonders 😉

I honestly think this album is just gorgeous... there’s something so special about it, especially because of that one specific shift in sound they pulled off that they never really touched again. Even though Gira isn't exactly a fan of it, god damn The Sun apparently still loves playing those parts during solo sets.

And yeah, Jarboe sounds absolutely incredible on that track you linked! 🙂

Just finished watching Letters from Iwo Jima. Honestly, the whole approach caught me off guard, especially with Clint Eastwood directing. I mean, sure, if you ignore the heavy-handed emotional tugging and some pretty unconvincing CGI explosions and stuff, there are some really decent, beautifully shot scenes... but on their own, they just don't quite hit hard enough for me to rank this movie above the other war films out there.

I've actually got a few female vocalists in mind—some in bands and some going solo—to suggest over the next couple of weeks... Oh, and that Sade album is definitely still a strong contender! 🙂

The scene is actually way better, but they left it out of the movie.

I mean, I was talking about how they dive into all those dark, morbid themes. And honestly, I had no clue there was a deleted scene! Though, let's be real... who's actually sitting around watching the uncut version of Ace Ventura? 😁

Haha, there’s definitely a pattern with them! My old roommate used to blast them all the time, and I know he had some wild fun facts about this specific record. Something about the album cover being controversial or whatever... I can't quite recall right now. Honestly, everything they do seems to stir up drama with the mainstream crowd. It doesn't really shock me though, but regardless, that sound just never quite clicked for me...

I checked out Kruleta a few years back after some buddies recommended him following their trip to Minneapolis... I definitely recognize his style, but he just hasn't quite made it onto my permanent playlists yet. Still, I'm giving him my vote because honestly, that kind of sound feels like exactly what I need right now...

I actually did something similar with Sade in a previous poll like this.

I've been taking another look at the other options too. There are definitely a few I’d give a chance, just maybe not at this exact moment...

Everything you’re saying hits the nail on the head. What I find even more fascinating is that instant messaging was basically in its infancy back then. The movie was actually made before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket; the fastest way to reach someone was just email, which is exactly what those girls are singing about at the start when they're asking people to shoot them an email.

Anyway, I kept my opening take intentionally vague just to leave some room for discussion, and you did a great job filling in those gaps. 🙂

They aren't direct comparisons, per se, but they left a much stronger impression on me because they deal with similar themes and vibes. You've got stuff from Hanekeov (who focuses a lot on media violence, but definitely has that touch of dehumanization linked to modernity and its discontents)... then certain episodes of Black Mirror, Lanthimos (like Dogtooth or Lobster...), and even Her.

Sono is actually pretty optimistic about these trends in the end, which really comes through with the band's final song and that girl who manages to break free from the mass influence... you know, all that stuff with the kids and the rewards they get just for giving "correct" answers.

Even though you eventually see where the film is heading, some parts felt just plain confusing to me—specifically certain plot elements. I usually try to keep some distance since it's set in Japan ( 😁 ), but once you're watching, you start wondering if things could have gone differently because it leads you down such a weird path. If it's intentional, fine, I respect the craft! But with some movies, those misleading bits eventually click together so you don't have to wonder why they were there. Here, though, maybe I should just accept that it might be something uniquely tied to Japanese culture that I can't quite grasp without doing more homework...

Just finished watching... Honestly, it’s such an obvious satire on how pop culture dictates trends for kids today, all while technology just strips away our humanity and leaves us feeling totally isolated.

As far as horror goes, there isn't much besides some weird, bizarre vibes and gore scenes—which felt more grotesque than actually scary or intense—but overall, it plays out more like a thriller.

I wonder if there's any specific symbolism tied to Japanese culture woven in here? Probably, and I might have missed a few layers, but honestly, the main messages are so loud and clear that the subtext didn't feel essential anyway...

It wasn't a bad watch, per se, but I wasn't totally sold. I think there are definitely better movies out there tackling these same themes...

Sometimes, a mental vision gets so vivid, it almost feels like you could reach out and touch it... 🙂

You’re definitely picking up on what I’m saying... I didn't exactly make it clear that I don't have it... 😉 I’m just saying... this is absolutely perfect for that slow, lazy Sunday vibe... just chilling out and taking it easy... 😎

So, my algorithm actually came through with some absolute gems on my playlist today... just some really beautiful stuff it served up out of nowhere!
Probably just because of the lead actress's vocals in that movie I just binged on Netflix...
Either we're all just dealing with deep-seated trauma, or we're out here questioning our entire existence... maybe both? Honestly, it's a lot to process...

I see you're feeling pretty inspired! I haven't actually sat down to watch it yet, but it's definitely on my list... 😉

Today is definitely a day for Jimmy Dawkins (and that whole vibe).

I’m picturing myself sitting on a porch (which I don't have), staring blankly at a rocking chair (don't have that either), just lighting up a pipe I spent all morning cleaning out with some bourbon-scented alcohol mix... whiskey aroma, obviously 😬
Morgan Brown4 said:I honestly just don't get people who still follow TV schedules, sit down for movies on the set, and actually get hyped about new programming cycles on PBS or whatever... it's just silly. 🤣

Look, I don't turn on the TV to catch the news, soap operas, or random junk, but if a great movie pops up—something I wasn't planning on hunting down on my laptop or searching for on-demand—then yeah, I'll happily watch it!

I know it sounds weird, and hey, I know you're totally tech-savvy and modern, but you don't have to act so shocked every time someone mentions watching a movie on a TV... honestly, it comes up in almost every conversation where the topic even touches it! ☕
