Thanks for all the input, everyone.

I went ahead and reported the death to Medicare, Social Security, and all the other spots the folks at the registrar's office told me were necessary.

I completely blanked on the CSS—honestly, my head was just spinning with everything else hitting me at once. Between planning the funeral, moving out of the apartment I shared with my mom, trying to settle up various debts, and dealing with an expired work contract... it was just a lot.

Anyway, after chatting with a few lawyer buddies, I've decided to just ignore them for now. I actually swung by the bank recently, too. They mentioned they usually just return funds once the CSS asks for them, though the guy behind the desk couldn't give me a straight answer on the specifics.
Thanks.

Hey there.

My mom passed away about a year and a couple of months ago. She was on social assistance. After she died, the bank froze her account and told me they couldn't give me any info until probate was settled. Since I knew the account was overdrawn and she didn't own any property, I never even bothered starting the probate process.

But, those folks at the local social services office kept sending social assistance checks to that frozen account for about six more months—until they called me about six months back asking questions regarding my mom, and finally realized she had passed. They immediately issued a termination order for the benefits. I told them straight up to take it up with the bank for the overpayment because I haven't touched a single cent from that account, nor could I since it's blocked.

Anyway, two weeks ago I get this letter from the social services office basically begging me to pay back an overpayment of roughly $833 ASAP, just because I'm technically the legal heir.
So, it’s not some formal threat of a writ of execution, and it wasn't sent by a legal department—just a social worker.
To me, it seems totally nuts, almost like an App move, but I want to be 100% sure—can they actually start a writ of execution against me as an heir if I never even opened probate?
From what little research I've done into case law and a county court ruling I saw—a succession order can replace an enforcement instrument, but if I don't have one, I don't think they can touch me. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'd still have the right to object based on the fact that I shouldn't inherit more debt than assets.

Thanks.

Come on guys, read a little closer.

I already said I found them way too late, so my bad. I know they’re famous and all, I’m just saying they aren't exactly huge in my specific circles.

That second post was just me being a bit sarcastic because nobody cares or comments on this, yet some incredibly stupid threads—like reading tea leaves or whatever—get a million replies.

And hey, Joshua Johnson4, go ahead and keep thinking I'm the one who discovered them.

Man, I wasn't expecting much, but seriously, is it actually possible that nobody listens to rock anymore? You've got that early Nirvana vibe, Pixies, White Stripes... I even read somewhere they compare them to Black Sabbath.
Check out this live clip:

To me, it's perfect. I’m still secretly hoping there are people out there who can actually recognize quality music and the kind of energy these guys bring to a live set. Or maybe I'm just delusional—after all, 51% of the country voted for Trump😲.

I don't know, man, maybe I'm just a bit slow since I only stumbled onto them three months ago. Naturally, most of my buddies I ask haven't even heard of them, let alone thought about hitting up one of their shows.

In my book, they're easily the best American band out there right now—I mean, besides the untouchable Partibrejkers; Tutor just absolutely kills it, and I can't stop listening to them. Anyone else out there as obsessed as I am?🙂
Asked my buddy, and he said there were like 5 or 6 security guards at the entrance and people just wandering around near the main gate by the parking lot—even the guy working the ramp—and absolutely nobody had any clue about the shuttle buses. It would’ve been way easier if they’d just put up a sign, a schedule, or even just a basic notice somewhere.
But whatever, I don't want to be that guy complaining—the Pixies totally saved the night, they were legendary. Too bad I never caught a Deal set, but this was still incredible.
I saw some info on the official site saying there was a free shuttle running from Hargrove’s place out to the island starting at 6 PM. Well, obviously, when I finally rolled up to the terminal and asked a guy working at Madison Square Garden, he just gave me this weird look. Even the security guards at the gate had zero clue about any shuttle. Honestly, it feels like they scrubbed that "info" off the website entirely today.
It’s pretty great how they just dump stupid misinformation on their official pages. Thanks to that, I missed half of Partibrekers and ended up wandering around like a total moron. Between the overpriced beer—which I had to wait 15 minutes for at those idiotic kiosks just to get a wristband—and this weather, I’m actually regretting buying a ticket at all. And don't even get me started on the ridiculous set times. Like, I wanted to catch Rambas (who play at 1:30 today?) but I gotta work tomorrow. Or listing Partibrekers at 6 PM like they're some damn opening act while some random nobodies get prime time... the organizers are pure idiots.
My first, and probably my last, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Quick question here.
I’m looking at this garnishment from $100 and I see the court costs are $17. Are there any other extra fees popping up—like paying for an asset appraiser or something if the debtor doesn't actually have anything to seize? Or are there any other hidden costs I should watch out for?
Thanks.

You thinking about section 2?

If the agency finds out—once they get that notice mentioned in section 1—that someone’s account was hit...
The bailiff doesn't have any legal grounds for payment listed in the registry yet. They’re gonna file it there once they get the paperwork.
Heads up—if the collector attaches a screenshot of the payment instructions showing that...
They finally slapped a levy on his bank accounts.

Alright, thanks for the heads-up. At least now I know what my next move is. Much appreciated.

ruggedmaker2 said:Actually, you can set up a protected account before the garnishment even starts, per the regulations regarding seizures of monetary assets.
All you have to do is take a copy of the notice or the court order—whatever paperwork you got showing that a seizure is imminent—down to the FIN.

If the seizure kicks off before you get that protected account sorted, they're going to drain everything from your current checking account. Then you’re stuck playing a game of bureaucratic hide-and-seek for a few days trying to get it back. They always eventually refund it, but man, it is such a massive headache. You need nerves of steel and way too much free time.
It's much safer to just open the protected account beforehand.

Thanks a ton.

Alright, thanks for the reply. So, if I'm following you, there's basically nothing we can do until they actually trigger the garnishment, and then we hit up FIN for protection? I'm assuming she’s got a legal right to get those funds back once they realize they took money that shouldn't have been touched in the first place, right?

Look, I'm a lawyer myself, but honestly, reading through the Consumer Protection Act, I'm still scratching my head at how you're supposed to shield assets that aren't even legally eligible for seizure. It's not like we're talking about millions here, but it sucks—my girlfriend is already scraping by as it is, and they really shouldn't be allowed to snatch away the bare essentials just to keep someone afloat.

Hey, looking for some advice on behalf of a friend.

So, AT&T is threatening her with some kind of seizure based on a final court ruling. She tried to appeal the initial decision because she’s struggling financially, but she sent it via mail and missed the deadline, so the court ruled she has to pay (I think it's just a few hundred bucks in legal fees).
The thing is, she’s an unemployed single mom with a little kid, renting a place, and doesn't own anything worth anything—her only income is social security and child support. I'm pretty sure, by law, they aren't allowed to touch those funds. But here's my question: how can she stop them from freezing her account? I know it's illegal, but AT&T has a massive legal team, and I know these big companies sometimes freeze money they shouldn't. How does she protect herself? Can she do something right now to prevent this illegal seizure? And what happens if they go ahead and block her account even though they aren't supposed to?
I don't think seizing her property is even an option since I know you can't take stuff that's necessary for basic living.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yeah, I actually just caught http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1016301/ the other day. It’s a pretty solid mystery thriller. A little predictable in spots, maybe, but honestly? Still worth the watch.

3D Movies: Yay or Nay? in Movies ·
Laura Thompson2 said:Hey there.

I’ve watched every single SAW movie, and now I see online that Saw 7 3D is coming out.
I actually called the Broadway theater in Miami to see if they were screening it, but they told me NO.

Now I want to download the film, but I’m wondering how I can get the right glasses to watch it in 3D at home.

Any advice?

I don't know, man. It's kinda weird that they aren't playing it in Miami when it's been running in Washington, D.C. at AMC Theatres for like two weeks already.
There’s one at AMC Šibenik, so maybe just hop over there.🙂)

It's pretty funny that it's showing in San Diego and Savannah but not in Miami. But hey, hang tight, I'm sure it'll show up eventually.
Mind-blowing documentary on Home Depot in Movies ·
I watched that a while back, nothing special—honestly, the documentary was kind of a drag. The visuals are killer and seriously impressive, but the movie itself? Nothing to write home about.
Planet Earth is way better.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Got one issue I can't quite pin down. Not sure if it’s tied to Windows 7, but it started acting up right after I installed it.

Basically, right in the middle of working, my screen just blacks out for a split second, then snaps back to normal like nothing even happened.
I’ve already got the latest graphics drivers installed and all my plugins are up to date—honestly, I'm stumped on what else could be causing this. It’s definitely not sleep mode or anything like that, either; it usually happens while I'm actually moving the mouse around.
Could my monitor be dying or something? If anyone knows what's going on, I'd really appreciate the help.

Oh, yeah, did a little digging on Google and saw a bunch of people dealing with this too http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/01/w...-as-it-sounds/ , but for me, it’s just that quick one-second blackout, so I'm still totally lost.

Honestly, that whole part in Hannibal was the dumbest scene in the movie.
And it’s not even that much of a torture if the other guy doesn't feel anything, right?
