Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
slyheron13 said:I managed to overclock my processor to 2.8 GHz somehow, but I can't push it any further. I haven't touched the memory settings at all, other than bumping the voltage to 2.10V.
If anyone knows why I can't get a higher overclock on the CPU, please let me know!

Try pulling out one of the sticks (the 512MB one), so you're just running 2x1GB, then attempt the OC.

I'm having trouble overclocking my CPU properly. Sometimes I can manage to push it up to 2.7 GHz (even with voltage adjustments—I'm currently at 1.350V), but that's rare, and even then, it doesn't perform reliably. I'm not sure if the motherboard is the culprit or if it's the processor itself. (I don't think it's the CPU since it runs perfectly fine at stock settings, actually performing better than when I try to overclock it!)😕

My specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 2x 4800+ 2.5 GHz 1mb cache + Thermaltake Blue Orb FX
MB: K9N Ultra nForce 560
GPU: XFX GeForce 7600GT
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2x512mb 800MHz & 2x1Gb 800MHz
PSU: Western Digital 500 w HDD
HDD: Seagate 250 GB

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
Please, let's keep the criticism to a minimum!!
THANKS👍

What frequency are you running your memory at?
Did you lock the PCI bus to 100 MHz?
Generally speaking, you should set everything to manual settings.

It seems like this processor just won't play nice with frequencies north of 3.9GHz... regardless of how much voltage I throw at it. 😢

However, we'll see how things settle in a day or two once the thermal paste has had some time to properly seat. 🙂

Harold Lopez31 said:I honestly don't know much about AMD, though I do know it's a solid motherboard.

And that is exactly where the issue lies. According to various reviews, even some of the weaker units can push past 400 Max FSB. Perhaps I am simply doing something wrong on my end.🤔

AMD Athlon 3800x2 on a Gigabyte MA69G-S3H

Harold Lopez31 said:🤷 It might be an issue if he pulls those other voltages too, but at least there's a warranty. You just need some wipes to clean up the mess.

I really need to find some time to tinker with my own motherboard. I honestly can't believe I can't hit even a 300 Max FSB. It could very well be a BIOS issue. With my old BIOS, I could never get a processor higher than 2.5 GHz, whether I was running it 24/7 or just using it for testing.

Harold Lopez31 said:It's about voltage modulation; the goal is to reduce (or completely eliminate) Vdrop—though some people call it Vdroop, which feels a bit counterintuitive.

Won't that end up frying the motherboard if I run it like that for long periods?

😱 🙂 🙂

Harold Lopez31 said:The pencil is a B3, as clearly stated on the packaging; even though a pencil is just a pencil (no offense intended to any pencils), it's generally better if it's softer, and a B3 provides that softness.
Regarding the Razer part, I'm seeing the same link used for both the DS3 and the DS3-R.
The specifications match up perfectly; there isn't really any other way to look at it. I've compared everything, and it all lines up.
We can just disregard that last question.😍

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living?

The thermal paste is going to start smoking like tires on a drag strip. 😛

My goal is to hit 4.3GHz... With Liquid Nitrogen, I could easily push past 5 GHz, but that's a different crowd altogether. 🙂

Liquid Nitrogen

The voltages look a bit strange to me. 🤔

So, it looks like the processor is a total fraud 😁

Wait, what are we talking about here? Which one, and when exactly?

Thomas Hill2 said:I can't really verify that right now since I'm still waiting on my P5K motherboard to arrive.🤷
However, I did get a recommendation for the VX from someone running it on a 775 socket, and they haven't run into any major issues or temperature concerns.

I am not suggesting the VX won't cool effectively, but a standard 120mm radiator actually offers better cooling performance at a much lower price point.

Thomas Hill2 said:He mentioned having some trouble getting the cooler to seat properly against the CPU, which is affecting the temperatures.🙂

If the heatsink isn't making solid contact, you're definitely going to see higher temps.
The difference between VX and 120 is quite noticeable, at least regarding the SoC on the 775 socket.

Thomas Hill2 said:I'm planning on sinking some cash into my rig very soon, specifically for:
ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP Motherboard (I might try a little overclocking, though I'm still deciding since this board is already top-tier)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 processor (obviously I'll push this thing to 3.6GHz) + a BigType vx cooler 😁
PC-8500 RAM, 2 GB, CRUCIAL Ballistix, DDR2 800MHz

I'll let you know how it goes. 🙂

I wouldn't go with the BigType vx version; just grab the standard one, as it fits the CPU much better. If you really want manual control over the speed, you should probably just pick up a Zalman fan mate instead.

I actually stopped reading the review about the Kandalf once I saw the claim that it’s the absolute best case out there and features top-tier liquid cooling😂

Afterward, I noticed he had listed a completely different case—it seems everyone wants to praise their own favorite brand😁

wiredmarlin5 said:Honestly, wiredmarlin5 is being totally soft here... someone needs to ban him... what a joke.😁

On a different note, my supertalent C4 2 x1GB (D9GHM👍) should arrive this Wednesday, and I'm also expecting the DS3P later this week... so there should be some great OC potential there.😲

Are those Supertalent-i worth picking up? I'm not really familiar with them, though I've heard from a few people that they're a total best buy.

What's their voltage rating? Are we looking at 1.8 or 2.2?

swiftcobra65 said:I think there was a misunderstanding; I am actually asking about the Intel Core 2 Duo e8200. As for DDR3, it's just out of my budget right now. Do you happen to have any solid recommendations for something more affordable?

The Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 and E8400 are essentially the same processor; they simply differ in their multiplier, meaning their maximum clock speeds are nearly identical.
