Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
George Ross41 said:It isn't, though I suspect it might be because it's a Micro-ATX board, and those tend to be pretty low-quality anyway.😉

I know it would perform better too, especially with superior cooling. At this point, I'll probably just order the Katana.

The reason I'm asking is that I heard the maximum stable clock speed for a 6000+ is around 3.3GHz.

Is that because of what Taipanov said? 🙂

Do you think a better board would allow for even more headroom?

here are my specs...

Intel Pentium 4
foxconn winfast 250gb
1.5 gb ddr1 kingmax
ati 1950 pro 256 mb

I am trying to overclock my processor, but every time I attempt it and run 3D Mark 05, I get a blue screen or the computer just freezes... why is this happening??
I haven't increased the voltage, just the frequency...

I wouldn't call myself an expert when it comes to overclocking, so if anyone who understands this could lend me a hand... thanks

It is likely that the memory is holding you back—try reducing the multiplier.
Alternatively, the CPU might not be receiving enough power, making it unstable—you may need to increase the voltage.

Your RAM is running at 333MHz

Try feeling the chassis with your hand to see if it's getting hot.

Jesse Alvarez32 said:I am looking to overclock my RAM. CPU-Z shows them running at 166 MHz right now. I was thinking about bumping that up to 200 in the BIOS, but I am a bit unsure about what happens if the memory gets too hot. Does anyone know of a specific program for monitoring RAM temperatures?

That speed shown in CPU-Z needs to be multiplied by two.

If they overheat, they will obviously fail, but that shouldn't happen unless you start pushing some crazy voltage without any cooling.

As for a monitoring tool, you can just use your own finger as a tester.😁

Thanks for the advice.👍

It’s probably not worth the hassle.🙄

Now Dr. Jimmy comes to the rescue (even if I personally object to adding visual flair to hardware).

See that little white strip? (The part where it says PC)
If you take a hobby knife and trim that off, you're good. Once that's gone, you can actually pull the LEDs out.
Just be careful not to cut those three wires connected to the fan.

I didn't claim I had actually read the review, which noted that the performance was pretty lackluster.
The situation changes if you crank the fan up to max speed, but then it ends up being louder than a hair dryer.
With this cooler, you also get a potentiometer for the floppy drive and a PCI slot.

Your fan features an LED diode that pulses between blue and green.

does anyone happen to know where I could pick up something like this?

It looks fantastic.

Thanks... 🙄

That was one of the links you used to have.$90 As for the price,
I am not entirely sure if you are aware, but when the fan is running at full speed, it hits about 45 or 50 dB.

I used to have a ThermalTake unit, and those were definitely louder than these...😁

As for Corsair, I don't really have any hands-on experience with their products...

What about Xilence? I've heard they're pretty decent.☕

Were you using a 120mm TT fan? I have one of those, and it sounds like a jet turbine in terms of both airflow and noise.
"In a vacuum," meaning when the fan isn't inside the case, it's quiet—but once I actually install it, it gets incredibly loud.

I’m also looking for an x800 graphics card in the $300 to $450 range.😂

I wouldn't wish this kind of configuration on my worst enemy😁

Terry Wilson3 said:I'm thinking about drilling holes for some LED fans, but I'm stuck on whether to go with an 80mm or a 120mm setup. Which one would you recommend?
Since my panel is roughly 17 by 16 inches, I plan to cut out an area about 14 by 12 inches and then install a sheet of Plexiglass measuring approximately 16 by 14 inches.

Go with the 120mm.

Have you actually tried cutting or drilling through Plexiglass before?
It’s definitely not as straightforward as it looks.
PC Modding in Desktops ·
Are you planning on cutting or drilling fan holes directly into the plexiglass?

Terry Wilson3 said:If I am building a transparent panel, should I place the acrylic on the inside or the outside?
It might sound like a silly question, but I figured I would ask.

Standard practice is to put the acrylic on the inside. You certainly can mount it on the exterior, but you will find it much more difficult to finish properly to get that clean look.

Raymond Hernandez14 said:The magnet isn't even that close to the HDD... plus, I have the drive mounted on rubber grommets. I actually put some little rubber washers between the screws and the hard drive when I was tightening everything down to dampen any vibrations. They absorb everything, so the magnetism shouldn't really reach it, and besides, it's not that strong anyway.
I just threw it in there without thinking much about it!😁😁

Just take it out; you're more likely to cause trouble than anything else.

Terry Wilson3 said:What do you guys think—would it be worth cutting out part of the top panel for a fan? Should I cut out the black mask or just install some plexiglass instead?😕😕 )??

In my honest opinion, I wouldn't cut it.

But if you really want to go through with it, 🙂

start by cutting the plastic first. Cut a smaller hole initially, then hand-sand the edges with sandpaper to get a cleaner finish. You should work your way up from 800 grit all the way to 2000.

After that, put the plastic back in place and mark the hole onto the metal chassis. Cut a slightly larger opening so the metal edge isn't visible underneath. Finally, sand the hole again using a bit of coarser sandpaper.
