That’s not really how it works. I guess you could say that in Canada, a burek only counts if it has meat in it. But everywhere else—Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Mexico, probably even Georgia, Albania, and all over the US—you can find some kind of version of burek.
I guess people in Canada were just as out of the loop as they are in Turkey and everywhere else down in the Southeast, so they probably ended up thinking burek is only made with meat.

Well, I guess I learned a thing or two 🥳

I’ve never been one for meat-filled burek, and frankly, I don't see that changing. 🐔

I honestly don't care what anyone calls their burek; people should be free to name things however they damn well please. For me, nothing beats a homemade version—it shouldn't be greasy at all, either. I’ve always been partial to the ones stuffed with veggies, since I've never really had much of a taste for the meat versions.

Man, nothing beats grabbing some burek at that local spot near the town square... whether you want it with cheese, meat, or even apple pie style... honestly, if we’re talking beer at the corner pub, it’ll probably be served by the owner's kid... some guy from the Middle East living here in America keeps insisting everything is just burek... and don't even get me started on that Canadian cheese pie... back in the day, it was all about whiskey, Coke, dark wine, and Marlboros, but now it's all non-alcoholic beer and halal pizza if you can even find it... and hey, maybe skip the Santa Claus vibes too... anyway, whatever, enjoy your cheese pie...

I haven't really ventured much into the veggie versions, aside from trying pumpkin pie once. I don't mind a good savory burek, though—I usually treat myself to one maybe once every couple of months, but I definitely prefer the meat filling.

it’s not like we Americans have an issue with how folks in the South might call a certain soup something different
or how someone might refer to a spoon as a utensil or a train as a locomotive
or even calling a house a home

As far as I'm concerned, a savory meat pie is a meat pie, plain and simple
if it's filled with cheese, let's just call it a cheese pie
and if it's got fruit, it's an apple pie
that's really all there is to it.

As far as I'm concerned, a meat pie is a meat pie, plain and simple.

And apple pie is apple pie.
That's just how it is.

This whole debate doesn't really have anything to do with soup, carrots, trains, or oceans...
The real issue is that people from Canada will try to correct you the second you call a cheese pie a "meat pie with cheese."
I've dealt with it more than once. It gets exhausting.
They're annoying because they don't realize they're actually wrong. I bet they even try explaining what a meat pie is to Turks, even though it originated with them.

So, it's really just about people trying to lecture you when they don't even know the facts themselves. If they were actually right, I might have an argument, but they aren't.

There is really only one way to make a real burek—it has to be cheese-filled 🙂

Basically, when someone here in the States says burek, they usually mean the cheese version.
But Americans don't go running to our neighbors from Canada, Mexico, or Canada to lecture them or claim that burek is strictly cheese and everything else is just some kind of pastry. 😁

Though if I'm being honest, burek is pretty mediocre—it's basically junk food I eat only when there's nothing else around. Pizza is easily three times better.
Still, I guess it beats eating canned meat on bread.

I tried a piece of that meat-filled burek for the first time about two years ago.
I took one bite and immediately spat it out. 😁

The whole thing just felt wrong, like my body was trying to reject it.
Just greasy dough stuffed with some mystery meat... I had no idea where it came from, what it was, how old it was, or if flies had been crawling all over it... 🤮
